CHINESE SEMI-AUTOMATIC CROSSBOW "CHU KO NO" WITH BOLTS.

Lot # 2003 (Sale Order: 3 of 423)

Originally developed during the Warring States period and differing from its European counterpart by combining the shooting, reloading, and cocking process in one motion, with a magazine mounted to the top, allowing the user to shoot many quarrels quickly. Unfortunately, the bolts do not have much power or accuracy, so they were typically coated in poison. Despite the shortcomings, it was used as late as the 19th century, and was popular with merchants and women. This is a late example, probably used by a merchant as indicated by the non recurve form, and with a waxed crossbow string. There are five quarrels on what appears to be bamboo, and affixed with crude points by tarred canvas. The top strip of the magazine is not original and was manufactured later in order to prevent the quarrels from falling. A small included letter indicates that it was received from a Sergeant Sam Schminkey in the United States army, who was stationed in China circa 1917-1933; along with a funeral card for that sergeant. CONDITION: Very good, with some handling marks and minor marks to the wood throughout. Mechanically fine. Quarrels have some patination. An interesting piece.

SIGNED 1545 LETTER OF CATHERINE PARR AS QUEEN, SIXTH AND LAST WIFE OF HENRY VIII.

Lot # 2011 (Sale Order: 11 of 423)

1 page, ex-Lattimer collection, boldly signed at left “Kateryn the Quene KP.” At right, 6 lines of text with heading at top, “By the Quene,” and 2 lines below. This appears to be a pay warrant authorizing distribution of 40 pounds. Born in 1512, Parr came to the attention of Henry VIII in 1543 after the death of her second husband, Lord Latimer, married him that year and outlived him by 20 months, dying in 1547. She reportedly had a good relationship with Henry’s son, the future Edward VI, and played a part in Henry’s reconciliations with Mary and Elizabeth. She was literate and capable, publishing 3 religious works during her lifetime, serving as Henry’s regent for 3 months in 1544 while he campaigned in France, and threaded her way through Tudor politics and court intrigue. She retired from court after the accession of Edward VI in January 1547 and in July married a fourth time, to Thomas Seymour, uncle of the young king. Parr bore a daughter on 30 August 1548 and died from complications of childbirth, likely puerperal fever, 6 days later. Seymour, engaged in a power struggle at court with his older brother and the Regency Council over control of his nephew, ended up tried for treason and executed in 1549. CONDITION: Very good. A rare signature.

FLANGED MACE.

Lot # 2013 (Sale Order: 13 of 423)

Form is indicative of a early 16th century mace of Italian or German origin with 7 flanges about the head, acid etched with what appear to be floral and animalistic imagery, a faceted half, and a handle with incised "braids" with finials at top and bottom. AN OUTSTANDING, FRESH, 16TH CENTURY BRONZE CANNON OF FRIEDRICH VON PRAG ZU WINDHAG.

Lot # 2018 (Sale Order: 18 of 423)

Approximate measurements are 53" from muzzle to cascabel, 40" from hub-to-hub, approximately 32" tall at the muzzle, and 65" from front of carriage to tail. Friedrich of Prague, Baron of Windhag, was the son of Andreas of Prague, a nobleman associating with the Salzburg Archbishop Matthaus Lang von Wellenburg, who himself was the son of Ladislaus Prager, an important nobleman with vast wealth and land holdings. On his death, Ladislaus's extensive holdings were split up amongst his family, and Andreas received the Windhag estate, which he passed to Friedrich on his death. Friedrich inherited significant debt from his father and accumulated more during his life, so much so that the estate was seized in 1597 and sold in 1616. This cannon is boldly emblazoned "GOTTES GNADE IST GROS" (trans: God's grace is great) over Friedrich's coat of arms, depicting monkeys on a chain (derived from Ladislaus's coat of arms; see the frescos in the Prager tomb at Altenburg and Riestaps Armorial General, Vols. V-VI, Plate XCII), with a knightly helmet and florals. Bottom banner reads "FRIDRICH VON PRAG FREYHERR ZV WINDHAGG ANNO 1582". This cannon is in 4 stages, dressed at the turned cannon muzzle with a cast band of florals, interwoven with a greenman face. Dolphin form carry handles, with cascabel also depicting a human face. Mounted on a later field carriage with rosette decorations along the body. CONDITION: Very good, with cannon turning a smooth deep-green patina throughout. Some rubbing to bronze at rear where it touches carriage. Bore has detritus in it, but is otherwise very clean and smooth. Carriage is good, wheels are cracked and should be tended to. Cannon were often used to display material wealth, with wealthier families owning larger and more ornate cannon, and this is an excellent example, particularly as authentic 16th-century cannon are few and far between. This is a particularly good example, as it has been kept inside for the last 58 years, avoiding exposure to the elements, and is a good size. PROVENANCE: Accompanied by a letter from Sotheby's when this cannon was offered to them in 1989, discussing some history of it. This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made. Paperwork: Sotheby Letter

EXCEPTIONAL ELECTROTYPE OF THE CLOSE HELMET OF HENRY II OF FRANCE.

Lot # 2019 (Sale Order: 19 of 423)

Produced circa last quarter of the 19th century, when electrotyping became a way for people to acquire almost perfect copies of exceptional pieces of arms and armor, with companies such as Elkington and Co. and Christofle and Compagnie manufacturing them and offering them for sale to both collectors and museums. This helmet is a copy of Henry II's embossed helm made and decorated with Roman motifs, including depictions of Julius Caesar, Pompeius Magnus, and various mythological figures, as designed by Delaune. High comb embossed with further Roman motifs. Gorget of 2 lames is decorated with flowing florals with "932" visible on inside of gorget. Accompanied by a letter from the Louvre, dated November 9th, 1956, from Hubert Landais, telling the writer that exact dating of the piece was not possible and referring him to Grancsay's article on Henry's armory in the Louvre; a brochure for the Louvre with the iconic Victory of Samothrace on the cover; a copy of the Met bulletin dated October, 1952, with Grancasy's article. CONDITION: Very good, cleaned to an in-the-white appearance, with traces of patination in deepest recesses. Some light pitting and softening throughout from cleaning, but scenes are still very defined. Visor lift replaced. This is a very presentable example, and 19th-century electrotypes are highly collectible as the original armors virtually never surface on the private market. Paperwork: Information from Met and Louvre

(A) OUTSTANDING SILVER MOUNTED PAIR OF ITALIAN FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOLS, TRIPLE SIGNED BY ZUGNO, WI

Lot # 2024 (Sale Order: 24 of 423)

These outstanding pistols were clearly made as a pair with identical configurations. Barrels are rounded with flatted sides at the breech, extensively carved with chisel cut florals and geometrics about the breech, with a focal vignette of a Greek soldier wearing a classical helmet, and boldly signed "G: B: ZVGNO" in a piece of inlaid silver at the sighting plane. Extremely ornate sideplates are decorated in the same pattern and have a vignette of what appears to be the same man. The beveled edge banana lock is equipped with an unbridled pan cover with curl at lip, swan neck cock, and integral waterproof pan, engraved with further geometrics, and accented by a portrait of a man with a laurel wreath on the cock screw and a small floral sprig at rear teat; the laurel wreath was associated with victory, especially military triumphs, and there are several stories relating to Caesar and laurel wreaths. The lock is accented by inlaid gold wire about the engraving and is proudly signed "G.B. ZVGNO" on the bottom bevel. Ramrods, likely the originals, with silver balustrade heads and pipes, are retained by a single pipe feeding into a reinforced mouth with a balustrade head and flowing into a silver floral finial, engraving en suite. Silver trigger guard with long floral urn finials on either end is decorated en suite and has a vignette of another helmeted warrior on the guard. Silver bow with a long tail is signed on the plate for the third and final time. Silver buttcaps with medium-length stirrups and further excellent en suite engraving and depict a third warrior on a tiered pommel. The burl walnut stocks are decorated with relief molding throughout and are inlaid at the wrists with a coat of arms depicting a walnut tree, a Toulouse cross, and an inescutcheon showing a bell, surmounted by a cross portent across the top, impaled to a crest with three bends, all surmounted by a ducal crown and wreathed in a floral device. The arms are those of Jean Louis de Nogaret de La Valette, the first and created Duke of Epernon, an extremely important member of the French nobility during the turn of the 17th century. Jean Louis fought with the Catholics during the Wars of Religion and during the Siege of La Rochelle, which caught the attention of the to-be Henry III. He quickly became one of Les Mignons, and the to-be king bestowed Nogaret de La Valetta with numerous titles, including maitre de camp of the Champagne Regiment, Governer of Fere, of Boulonnais, Loches, Lyon, Metz, and the surrounding areas, of Normandy, of Caen, of Le Havre, Knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit, Colonel-General of the Infantry, and more. Jean Louis opposed the rise of Henry of Navarre after the assassination of Henry III, and, while he was eventually forced to submit, was part of the conspiracy that assassinated Henry VI and supported Louis XIII and his mother as regent until Louis was old enough to take the crown. A military man through and through, fighting well into his old age, Nogaret de la Valette was involved in the suppression of the Huguenots and was military governor of Guienne. Unfortunately, his poor relationship with Henri de Sourdis led to a physical altercation in public, and de Sourdis demanded, and received, that Nogaret de La Valette be excommunicated. He died in January 1642 and was buried at Saint-Blaise de Cadillac, Gironde. When the tomb was destroyed in 1792, the state of fame was saved and is now in the Louvre, while other fragments are preserved in the Museum of Aquitaine. Nogaret fought deep into old age, leading his sons into battle, and he had many children, both legitimate and illegitimate. CONDITION: Overall excellent. Metal is bright and was carefully cleaned in the European fashion at some point in the past, with some mossing and light patina that does not detract. Silver is bright; engraving and detail work is crisp throughout. Stocks are very good, with some handling marks and softening from age. Both pistols have a crack at the fore barrel pin and under the locks, running to fore finial, stable. Mechanically fine, bores are very good. An extremely attractive and interesting pair of pistols with ties to an important Frenchman. Barrel Length: (BOTH) 9 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: (BOTH) .62 Smoothbore FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: (BOTH) G.B. Zugno Model: (BOTH) Flintlock Serial Number: (BOTH) NSN
