RARE AMERICAN LION OR MONKEY REVOLUTIONARY WAR HORSEMAN'S SABER.

Lot # 2001 (Sale Order: 1 of 505)

The late William Guthman wrote an article for "Man At Arms" magazine (September-October 1982) noting that three swords of this form were found in an attic in Maine. He later disclosed that they came from Eliot, just across the river from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Bill and many others have referred to this type as a "monkey hilt", although it is more likely that these are lion-head pommels. The sword has a slightly curved, single-edged, Spanish-style blade with a double full. The sword has a classic brass 4-slot guard and a simplified lions head pommel with some engraved details and a brass capstan. The cherry grip has a brass ferrule at both ends. For an example of another nearly identical sword, see plate 336.S on page 173 of "Swords & Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. This is a very desirable and scarce form of a colonial American saber. CONDITION: Blade retains a dark even patina. Cutting edge shows some battle nicks. Hilt retains a mellowing mustard patina and shows some minor scattered marks. Grip is excellent with one minor dent. Hilt and blade are tight. This is a very desirable form of an American cavalry saber. This sword is illustrated and discussed on pp. 62-63 of "For Liberty I Live" by Al Benting. Blade Length: 33" Overall Length: 38 - 1/2"

US REVOLUTIONARY WAR BAR SHOT RECOVERED FROM FORT INDEPENDENCE, EX LATTIMER.

Lot # 2004 (Sale Order: 4 of 505)

A very nice example of a relic munition from the Revolutionary War era. This bar shot measures approximately 15 - 1/2" long and 4" width at the ends. Constructed of 2 ball hemisphere joints that are connected by a solid round bar, the shot's effect was similar to chain shot. When fired, this munition creates a spinning rotation and was devastating at short range, especially when cutting through sails, shrouds, rigging, and shipboard personnel. This example exhibits an original label that reads "FROM AMMUNITION DUMP AT FT. INDEPENDENCE / KINGSBRIDGE, N.Y.C. 1915" and was once coveted by renowned collector Dr. John K. Lattimer. Originally known as Castle William the fort was renamed Fort Adams and then Fort Independence after it was abandoned by the British and utilized by American forces during the Revolutionary War. CONDITION: Relic.

CORRECTION: This bar shot was purchased by Dr. John K. Lattimer from painter and historian Don Troiani in 1977. A letter from Troiani to Dr. Lattimer is included with this lot describing the bar shot.

(A) RARE 1ST AMERICAN 1ST BATTALION MARKED SHORT LAND PATTERN BROWN BESS, EX STEVE HENCH.

Lot # 2006 (Sale Order: 6 of 505)

It is well documented that these Pattern 1759 Marine Militia muskets were issued to Loyalist troops. In May of 1779 the Queen's Rangers were designated as the 1st American Regiment, this was the beginning of the Loyalist units. It is interesting to note that this musket came out of an attic in Long Island, which was a highly concentrated Loyalist stronghold. Round, steel barrel with bayonet lug mounted on top near muzzle. The top is engraved "1A No 1B" for 1st American 1st Battalion. Customary Government view and proof marks are partially visible; and crown over "FG" at breech. Lockplate is marked "TOWER" behind cock, crown over "GR" between the cock and pan. The lock is a second lock replaced during the period of use. Standard Pattern 1759 Marine Militia furniture including buttplate tang with a screw which is also inscribed with a series of punched dots forming the date "1778". At the time of issue, just as was done with the Queen's Rangers, a wrist escutcheon was added. The wrist escutcheon has a worn inscription which appears to read "E / 50". As this is the Pattern 1759, there is a brass ramrod entry ferrule. Walnut stock of classic British form with a bulge at the ramrod entry ferrule and a carved beavertail with an added incised line which was done during the period. There is also a partially visible crown stamped behind the trigger guard tang and a large "I" carved into the stock on the right side. Complete with its original iron ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel retains a heavy brown patina with some scattered areas of pitting and some light wear to markings. Lock retains a matching surface, frizzen was resleeved during the period, and at the time the lock was replaced the sideplate was recessed slightly for fitting purposes. Lock is in its original flintlock configuration. Brass retains a very dark green, unpolished surface. Stock retains its original surface with some light added finish, showing scattered marks from use, age cracks, and a small in-period repair where the mainspring was broken out below the lockplate. There is some minor chipping around the back of the lock tang and one minor splinter on the left side of the forend towards the muzzle. A rare opportunity to own a regimentally marked and dated Loyalist musket in untouched condition. PROVENANCE: Ex. Steve Hench Collection, sold as lot 1141 on October 30, 2019 at Morphy Auctions. Barrel Length: 41 - 3/4" Caliber/Bore: .80 FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Tower Model: Short Land Pattern Brown Bess Paperwork: Provenance, Information Serial Number: NSN

RARE AND WELL-DOCUMENTED ORNATE POLYCHROME DECORATED HAVANA MAP POWDER HORN OF JAMES HOBERT 1767

Lot # 2019 (Sale Order: 19 of 505)

This powder horn is featured on a two page spread on pages 86 and 87 of "Engraved Powder Horns of the French & Indian War and the Revolutionary War Era" by Nathan L. Swayze. Havana map horns are extremely rare and only a handful are known to exist. This professionally engraved powder horn measures 16 - 1/2" overall and has a curved body. It is interesting to note that it is a left handed powder horn. The horn depicts a professionally engraved plan of Havana, including "Mooro" (Moro Castle), Shepards Battery, New Store, Regluger, Ponto, North Port, and Fuza. Polychrome red is used in addition to black pigment. 3 warships are also shown and labeled as "THE SPAINISH ADMIRAL, RIPPIN and VALLIENT". The horn has a large lobe at the plug end as well as a scalloped edge at the recessed section and 2 scalloped rings on the 2-stage spout section, one section is faceted. In the 18th century, Havana was the center of the Spanish trade in North America. During the French & Indian War, England declared war on Spain as they were allies with the French. After a 40 day siege on Havana, Moro Castle was taken on July 30th 1762 and Havana was surrendered on August 14th. The main inscription over the city of Havana reads "THE CITY OF HAVANA ILLUMINATED AT THE EMBARKATION / OF THE BRITISH TROOPS JULY THE 7TH 1763". On the reverse side the original name cartouche was removed during the period and the name "JAMES / HOBEL" and the date "1767" were applied. It is possible that Hobel was a member of the British army during the occupation of Cuba and Florida according to Swayze. When the horn was photographed for the book, it was in the author's collection. The powder horn is also engraved with flora motifs, flags, forts, and a bird. CONDITION: Horn retains a light yellow dry surface and has not been cleaned or lacquered. The polychrome colors are bright and there is some minor chipping around the tip of the spout. On the back of the horn there are some minor cracks around the base, with one sliver professionally replaced and well matched. Flat wooden plug possibly replaced. Another example by this maker is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A very important and attractive French & Indian War powder horn. It is generally accepted that the carver of the 3 or 4 known horns of this particular style were carved by Peter Robertson, a Corporal in the 9th British Regiment out of St. Augustine, Florida. It is assumed he was at the Battle of Havana 1762-63; one is on permanent display at the Smithsonian. PROVENANCE: Ex. Nathan L. Swayze; 2014, Joe Kindig III, Lancaster, Pennsylvania; 2008, Patrick Hornberger, Trappe, Maryland; 1994, Waldo Hutchins, Glen Head, Long Island; William Guthman, Westport, Connecticut 1973 (Around); William Goodwin Renwick estate, Tucson, Arizona. Accompanied by an extensive file of provenance.
