(C) Rare Savage Arms Model 1907 U.S. Trials Semi-Automatic Pistol.

Lot # 34 (Sale Order: 33 of 545)

All the information on this pistol has been obtained from the book "Savage Pistols' by Bailey Brower Jr. His research states that a total of 288 pistols were manufactured to supply for testing to the U.S. Government looking for a contract. Several trials were held over the years but the final shoot-off that garnered the U.S. contract for the famed Colt Model 1911 came about on March 15th, 1911. An endurance test of 6,000 rounds was held in front of a crowd of observers. By the end of the competition, the Colt performed without a hitch, while the Savage suffered through 31 malfunctions and five parts breakdowns during the test firing. Thus, the Colt 1911 became the Military pistol of choice. At the end of the testing, Savage bought back 181 of the Model 1907 .45 for $6.50, 10% of the price paid by the Army. Savage made these available on the commercial market; repairing, refinishing, and shipping them out as orders came in. These .45's were sold wearing at least three different finishes, depending on what the factory was using for its commercial pistol at the time. Guns sold prior to World War I had their slide marking removed and "CAL. 45" remains on the slide. After the war, 45 were sold with re-stamped new slide legend "Savage Arms Corp. Utica. N.Y. U.S.A." on the left side of barrel. According to the book, they were refinished in the dull matte blue-black. This pistol retains nearly all of a commercial rust high-polish royal blue finish with all readable legends and bright case-colored trigger with near mint checkered walnut grips. This would indicate that this pistol was again restored after the fact, or that it was refinished by factory in the style of blue used on many of their commercial pistols. Regardless, it remains today in near new condition, inside and out, just as it would have looked when the factory offered them for resale as refurbished. These handguns are so rare, even serious collectors have never seen an example. It carries the same collector mystique as the Luger test trial .45, and is of significant historical value in that, had it won the competition on that chilly March day in 1911, it would have been today's equivalent to the Colt 1911, and would have changed U.S. Military handgun history for decades. The bore appears as-new and function is flawless. We completely field stripped this pistol and you will find the number 134 stamped on the inside lip on the forward section of frame. It is also stamped on the underside of slide where the rib is milled. It is stamped on the barrel lug, and the underside. All four major parts of the gun have matching numbers. An extraordinary opportunity for the collector of U.S. handguns and the collector of unusual pistols to acquire a fine example of a rare gun. From the G. Thomas Puett Collection.Barrel Length: 5"Caliber/Bore: .45 ACPFFL Status: Curio & RelicManufacturer: Savage ArmsModel: Model 1907Paperwork: No Serial Number: 134

Original front sight band with two holes and narrow blade with original sheet metal sight cover. It has a 1902 style rear sight that has the 1904 peep attachment and usual chamber markings. (C) Factory Engraved Winchester Model 1895 Rifle (1909).

Lot # 39 (Sale Order: 38 of 545)

Factory engraved with dual vignettes of games scenes. Left has a bounding Dall sheep surrounded by a chiseled border and traditional arabesque scrolls with additional scroll filled border. The right side is more elaborately embellished with a vignette of a pair of deer grazing in the forefront of a rolling pasture. A dual line border with arabesque scroll and additional scroll filled borders encompass the entire side of the receiver. A fine engraved scroll and border are to be found on the top of the chamber area of the barrel as well as the heel of the buttplate. Matching borders are engraved on the tang as well. The deluxe flame cut crotch American walnut stocks are at the least a triple X grade of select wood and are checkered in the elaborate "E" pattern of checkering for highly finished Winchester rifles. The stocks are further finished in a piano varnish and a small ebony tip in the forearm. Rifle is very fine overall with over 95% factory blue finish remaining upon the barrel. The receiver has thinned substantially with blue finish remaining in protected areas and balance has turned a mellow patina. Magazine area has a loss of finish in the 20% range from honest carry and use. The wood stocks are very fine as the highly figured walnut and varnish do show numerous small period scratches and abrasions but are very fine overall. This is an extremely uncommon rifle as the Model 1895 Winchester was very infrequently embellished, and the amount and style of the engraving on this example is what is known as $25.00 engraved. This would be the centerpiece of any well established Winchester collection. Factory letter states that serial No. 66769 was applied October 15th, 1909 with no other information.Barrel Length: 24"Caliber/Bore: .30 Gov 03FFL Status: Curio & RelicManufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1895Paperwork: YesSerial Number: 66769B

(C) Massive WWI German Mauser 1918 T-Gewehr Anti-Tank Rifle (1918).

Lot # 40 (Sale Order: 39 of 545)

Humongous T-Gewehr anti-tank rifle made by Mauser-Werke, Oberndorf in 1918 to counter newly developed Allied tanks. The T-Gewehr was essentially a single shot, upsized Mauser 98 but was the first of its kind officially adopted and used in the last part of World War I in an attempt to provide German dismounted troops a man portable anti-tank weapon. The T-Gewehr uses the large 13mm steel cored, high velocity, armor piercing bullet which was effective against early armor plate of World War I tanks which rarely exceeded 12mm thickness. The weapon is quite heavy at 41 pounds with bi-pod and loaded and offered brutal recoil. Approximately 15,000 were produced before the end of the war and many were brought back as souvenirs and put on display in museums and local VFW posts but are rarely offered in the market today. Receiver ring is marked with the Mauser banner and the date “1918”. Receiver and sight sleeve were observed to have matching serial numbers. Trigger guard, front band/bi-pod attachment and bolt as well as stock are also matching numbered. Bolt and cocking assembly are not numbers matching to rest of rifle. No additional disassembly was effected to check for other matching numbers. Accompanied by a 1918-type detachable bi-pod. Fine condition, numbered as noted above. Barrel retains about 90% orig blue, thin about the middle. Receiver and bolt are a mottled grey metal patina. Trigger guard retains about 95% original blue. Stock has numerous bruises, nicks, dings and scratches but is completely solid with a hand worn patina. Mechanics are fine. Bright shiny bore. Bi-pod is fine and retains substantial original black paint and is possibly a contemporary replacement. Complete with one 13.2mm loaded cartridge.Accessories: BipodBarrel Length: 41"Caliber/Bore: 13 mmFFL Status: Curio & RelicManufacturer: MauserModel: T-GewehrPaperwork: No Serial Number: 3553

Lot # 41 (Sale Order: 40 of 545)

This model was manufactured 1907-1911. Long considered by collectors to be the finest bolt action sporting rifle ever produced at a factory. This rifle is manufactured prior to World War I. The cartridge itself was invented in 1905, based on a 2-1/2" bottleneck case and a 270 grain bullet. It was first employed on the famed Mannlicher Schoenauer but was not strong enough for this new round and the reliable Mauser action replaced it prior to World War I, and was utilized until discontinued in 1930's. This example features full heavy round barrel with integral lanyard loop, a pop-up ramp front sight, three leaf folding express sight to 300 yards, stippled action, blued finish, pistol grip checkered walnut stock, takedown, horn forend tip, pistol grip cap with trap that houses an additional front sight numbered to gun, rear sling swivel, a sterling silver presentation plaque engraved "GJ"(?), and a black composite buttplate. As are a majority of these rifles, this example has been expertly refurbished. The stock is made of dark walnut with an oil finish, sharp checkering and the metal retains 98% of the reapplied blue finish. The action locks up like new and the bore exhibits strong clean rifling. The rifle is accompanied by 20 loaded rounds (contemporary loaded) and a set of RCBs loading dies. (C) U.S. Springfield Model 1922 .30 Heavy Barrel "Match" Special Bolt Action Rifle.

Lot # 45 (Sale Order: 44 of 545)

In reading the fine article by William R. Hansen in the September 2016 magazine entitled "U.S. Martial Arms Collector" published by Martial Arms expert Wayne Gagner, he writes, "...after rare, what comes next?" This is a fair question given the survival rate of original and unaltered Model 1922 heavy barrel match rifles can be counted on one hand. It is estimated that the vast majority of these rare match rifles were later altered to the type "T" variation. This rifle by serial number is listed in this fine article as example No. 1 and places this rifle as having been assigned to Captain James F. Laughlin, a top rated marksman on the 1922 Massachusetts National Guard team. The right side of the stock is stamped, "Mass. Rifle Team". Captain Laughlin made the international shooting team in 1923 scoring an incredible 248/250. These rifles are instantly recognizable to the knowledgeable collector by the following special features. Springfield Armory first assembled new and distinctively American heavy barrel rifles for the 1921 International Rifle Team held in Leon, France. The original drawing for this rifle can be found on page 106 in William Brophy's book titled "The Springfield 1903 Rifles". The front sight base is integral to the barrel and does not have the typical band. The scope blocks are factory mounted with no provision for rear sight and spaced 5-3/4" on center using standard AO blocks. The 1917 Enfield front barrel band to allow for the large diameter barrel. Features the NRA style pistol grip, two bolt, walnut sporter stock with wide finger grooves. Has the short stem Lyman 48 receiver sight and swept bolt stamped "WL3". Non serif safety. Left side of stock has the deep "D.A.L." in rectangle for Springfield Armory production 1918 - 1942. Wrist has block letter "P" in circle. Sling swivel on toe of stock. Has the Type 7 stamped, cupped steel buttplate. Rifle is in excellent all original untouched condition. The receiver remains the majority of the original factory high polish commercial type blue finish. The barrel retains 85% original factory rust blue, thinning from age. Stock is excellent with a few minor storage dings and a few bumps at the left side of forend. It is equipped with special order, adjustable double set triggers. Bore has an ME reading of 0 and a TE reading of 7. Bolt is polished in the white. Rifle is accompanied by a copy of the U.S. Martial Arms Collector magazine that features an article on this exact rifle. Also comes with a photocopy of Captain Laughlin's shooting score from 1923 from the American Rifleman with a picture of Laughlin that appears to be him holding this exact rifle. According to the article all of the known examples are serial numbered from 124,349 to 124,889 with nine listed known examples that have been identified to date. Long referred to by knowledgeable Springfield collectors as the "ghost rifles" as they are often talked about but never seen. This may be a once in a lifetime chance to add what is arguably the rarest U.S. Springfield Model to your collection. Includes a Springfield research letter. Comes with factory letter. Barrel Length: 24"Caliber/Bore: .30-06FFL Status: Curio & RelicManufacturer: SpringfieldModel: 1922Paperwork: YesSerial Number: 1244354
