LOT OF INCAN BRAIN SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS.

Lot # 1001 (Sale Order: 1 of 600)

Circa 1430-1530, Pre-Columbian. 20 copper trepanning brain surgery tools. Ancient societies, especially in South America, practiced skull trepanation surgical procedures. These methods were employed to combat hematomas and remove pieces of bone from skulls which were probably fractured during rituals, and fighting between warriors of different tribes or villages. This grouping was most likely archeologically recovered together, as it represents a wide range of tool used by the ancient brain surgeon. Present are tweezers, knives, bone chisels, and drills all of a diminutive size and design indicating they were used for precise work. From the famed Dr. Lattimer collection that has numerous items on display at the Metropolitan, National Portrait Gallery, and other noted universities and institutions. CONDITION: Typical mottled green ground action and oxidation as found on items recovered from Incan and Peruvian sites. BRM.

AN ATTRACTIVE COMPOSITE SUIT OF ARMOR WITH TAPESTRIES.

Lot # 1009 (Sale Order: 9 of 600)

Stylistically, this armor is reminiscent of armor from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. It has a mix of both period (circa mid 16th century) and contemporary pieces, but has been carefully assembled to present a good homogenous appearance. The later helmet with visor and plume holder sits on a gorget of 3 lames, also later. Couters and wrist section of gauntlets with good delamination and interiors rough from the hammer; pauldrons of 5 lames, hand guards, and vambraces later. Finger defenses appear to be a mix but leather not removed to check interiors to avoid damage. Breast plate and backplate period. Tassets of 7 lames, some lames replaced. Poleyn of 5 lames, 5 lame greaves, and 6 lame sabatons of later date. On a moulded wood base with blue heraldric shields with golden fleur-de-lis. Included are 2 tapestries, well woven, depicting classical scenes from the Camelot mythos, each measuring approximately 6' x 4', which would compliment the piece well. CONDITION: Overall very good with a wonderful homogenous appearance. Metal is essentially a silvery hue throughout, with some spots of oxidation and delamination throughout. Polishing marks visible from a European style cleaning that does not detract. Mannequin mount is solid, although shoulder T cross could be extended into the pauldrons, tapestries are well woven and tight. A well presenting suit that has a pair of lovely tapestries ready for your corner. EMWThis is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made.

Lot # 1010 (Sale Order: 10 of 600)

This is a well presenting suit of armor that is composited throughout, with the key pieces Italian in nature, circa mid-16th century. The helmet is with good delamination and age, with lower half of visor replaced. Pauldrons are both of appropriate age with roped borders and 5 lames. Some parts of vamplates are period while others are replaced; coutures and gauntlets are later Victorian replacements. These breastplates may have come from the Armory of the Knights of St. John, and may share origination with the breastplate on this example. Tassets are slightly later (late-16th) but present well, bosses replaced. Greaves, sabatons, fan plates, and toe protection all of later manufacture. Mannequin is holding a composite sword with a hilt with a that is very similar to an English or German rapier circa early 17th century; for a similar example, see 42.50.12 in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Hilt is decorated with chiseled florals and geometrics, 2 branches form half-rings about the ricasso, with a large ring at the guard, S shaped quillons, and heavily softened engraving ahead of the fuller. Mounted on a fixed mannequin with a red velvet skirt, and a rolling base with bosses and velvet lining. CONDITION: Suit presents well and is homogenous, but period pieces have chipping and delamination throughout, some have gone through the metal, most noticeable on left pauldron and rear comb of helmet. Oxidation and patina throughout, more on recent pieces. Gauntlets are missing fingers. Sword an even chocolate patina. A professional cleaning and remounting should be considered, and would dramatically improve the piece. PROVENNACE: Ex. Lattimer collection. EMW
