348-350 AD Ancient Rome Constans/Constantius II Fallen Horseman 18mm 2.28g Ancient Grades vf

Lot # 6621 (Sale Order: 2898 of 3171)

348-350 AD Ancient Rome Constans/Constantius II Fallen Horseman 18mm 2.28g Ancient Grades vf. Flavius Julius Constans (c. 323 – 350), also called Constans I, was ...moreRoman emperor from 337 to 350. He held the imperial rank of caesar from 333, and was the youngest son of Constantine the Great. After his father's death, he was made augustus alongside his brothers in September 337. Constantius II was Roman emperor from 337 to 361. His reign saw constant warfare on the borders against the Sasanian Empire and Germanic peoples, while internally the Roman Empire went through repeated civil wars, court intrigues, and usurpations. His religious policies inflamed domestic conflicts that would continue after his death. On the "Falling Horseman" type coins, Virtus or a Roman soldier is pictured spearing a barbarian horseman. Of the Roman coins depicting battle, varieties of this coin are among the most violent in imagery. When these coins were minted, only two sons of Constantine the Great still survived, and had split the Empire.
