WHAT IS THE BOSTON COLLECTION?

The Boston Collection was put together by a gentleman in Boston, Massachusetts. 

He is a retired physician who spent his career working in a hospital over the last 35 years.  His only passion besides medicine was coins. 

He thought of it as his “calm” after the long hours at the hospital.  He attended coin shows once a month on Sunday’s for most of his adult life.  He diligently collected this collection for over 30 years.  Constantly improving his collection, insisting that it was only a premium collection by changing and swapping out coins to improve on them until it was truly a collection to behold.

It was founded in 312 BC by the Macedonian general Seleucus I Nicator, following the division of the Macedonian Empire founded by Alexander the Great, and ruled by the Seleucid dynasty until its annexation by the Roman Republic under Pompey in 63 BC.

41-68 AD Ancient Roman Provincial Coin, Macedonia, Philippi Ancient Grades xf. Philippi was a major Greek city northwest of the nearby island, Thasos. Its original...more name was Crenides (Greek: ????????, Kr?n?des "Fountains") after its establishment by Thasian colonists in 360/359 BC. The city was renamed by Philip II of Macedon in 356 BC and abandoned in the 14th century after the Ottoman conquest. The present village of Filippoi is located near the ruins of the ancient city and is part of the region of East Macedonia and Thrace in Kavala, Greece. The archaeological site was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016 because of its exceptional Roman architecture, its urban layout as a smaller reflection of Rome itself, and its importance in early Christianity.

It's refe...morerred to as a "Horseblanket Note," due to their large size. The obverse features Washington and a vignette of Columbus sighting America. The reverse shows a "sawhorse" design. Add in the bright red seal and serial numbers and you've got a miniature work of art.

At the beginning of the...more Civil War people starting hoarding coins for their precious metal content. Coins became difficult to find because of the hoarding. People started to try to use stamps instead of coins as a means of commerce. The government decided to help ease the hoarding issue by issuing “paper coins” also known as postage currency or fractional currency. Fractional currency was first issued on August 21, 1862 and they were last issued on February 15, 1876. Three cents, five cents, ten cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty cents notes were all issued. Fractional currency is physically smaller than other United States money. It also does not have a serial number.
