HANNAH SHERGOLD 'CHARGING BLACK RHINO'

Lot # 31 (Sale Order: 30 of 291)

HANNAH SHERGOLD 'CHARGING BLACK RHINO' Edition 2 of 12 approx. 60cm by 25cm by 25cm bronze mounted on granite and oak Provenance: Hannah Shergold is an exciting and gifted sculptor specialising in bronze animal portraiture. She graduated from Cambridge University in 2006 where she studied Veterinary Medicine in order to focus fully on her passion for art and sculpture. Hannah is completely self-taught and yet quickly progressed to creating life-size limited edition works in bronze that are beautifully accurate and that express exquisite grace and movement. In 2009 still eager for adventure and challenge in her life Hannah joined the British Army and commissioned into the Army Air Corps. She is now a fully qualified Lynx helicopter pilot and has served all over the world both in a ground role and in her own field as an aviator. Hannah throws herself into her commissioned sculpture projects during her free time and has recently completed substantial pieces for the Army Air Corps and the 1st (UK) Armoured Division in Germany. In the near future she plans to broaden her collection to include lifesize human portraiture a challenge that she will no doubt take on with her usual vigour tenacity and attention to detail. Attention to detail enables Hannah to capture not only the animal's physical features but also its temperament and mood. Subtle alterations of an eye-brow nostril lip or ear all help to ensure that her sculpture is transformed into a bespoke work of art. Her knowledge of the physical anatomy of her subjects enables her to succeed where other sculptors can not. Hannah's understanding of the weight transfer between the limbs of an animal as well as its gait and flexion through each joint breathes life into her work that few others can boast. Hannah's spends her time sculpting at the Lockbund Foundry in Oxfordshire where she is an Artist in Residence during her leave from the Army. Other Notes: This sculpture was originally commissioned by Major General James R Chiswell CBE MC General Officer Commanding 1 (UK) Armoured Division to commemorate the re-designation to 1 (UK) Division in July 2014. Their Divisional emblem the charging rhino represents the armour agility and strength that was brought to bear by tanks and armoured vehicles. Edition 1 of the sculpture currently resides in Herford Germany and will move to Imphal Barracks in York in 2015.
