Rare Colt 1860 Army Revolver in .36 Caliber “Richards-Mason Conversion” Serial # 1636

Lot # 84 (Sale Order: 84 of 258)

Please Note: We were Notified Today of a Civil Action that will prevent us from releasing this lot until it has been resolved. We will still sell it in this Auction to ...morethe highest Bidder without Reserve, but “Subject to Confirmation” and will not take payment or release the item until the issue is resolved. This will not in any way affect the sales price, and the dispute is not in relation to a reserve or minimum bid. We apologize for any inconvenience, but this is out of our control, and the Attorneys are working diligently to expedite this process as quickly as possible. This is a Rare Colt 1860 Army/Navy? Revolver in .36 Caliber “Richards-Mason Conversion” Serial # 1636. It is stamped .36 Cal. This gun appears to be in wonderful antique working condition with a clean bore. This gun has an approximate barrel length of 7.5” and is marked on the barrel “Address COL. Sam L Colt New York US America”. The 6 shot cylinder is nicely engraved and marked with “Colts Patent No 636” and “Encased 16 May 1843”. The serial # 1636 is marked throughout the gun, except for the loading which is serial #4364, as seen in the posted picture of the loading gate. The gun is marked “36 CAL” on the brass trigger guard, and the left frame marked with “PAT JULY 25, 1871 PAT JULY 2, 1872”. We have been sent the following information by one of the more serious collectors that he believes the gun to be: “an 1872 built as a Cartridge gun from 1862 parts still in inventory. It IS the rarer gun made for less than one year! The 1871, 1872 patent dates are a dead giveaway. Also, I was able to download and blow up the photo showing the hammer. It's a Richards Conversion, and it does not have the Mason improvements.” Ultimately please make your determination. This gun and other high quality guns in this Auction are from a private collection and should be inspected in person to ultimately determine and confirm condition, value, type, grade, measurements, touch marks, and variations. We are not Experts on some of these rarer guns, so we have given possible models that they may be, but we have gotten multiple emails of different opinions on other possibilities as well, so please only use our opinions as a guide, and do your own research to determine what model you believe each gun is.
