James Sessions Gloucester Harbor Watercolor

Lot # 853 (Sale Order: 853 of 1396)

Watercolor Painting. 26 1/2" by 32" framed. James Milton Sessions (1882 - 1962) was active/lived in Illinois. James Sessions is known for Outdoor genre, marine, illustrat...moreion. The following is from Karol Franks, who has researched the artist: James Milton Sessions, born on September 20, 1882 in Rome, NY, received his initial exposure to art from his mother, who was an accomplished artist. He trained at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1903-1906 and initially supported himself as a wheelsman aboard Great Lakes ships from 1906-1914, later serving in the Illinois Naval Reserve during World War I. He also worked as a commercial illustrator. He was a master watercolorist of marine, sporting, and military World War II scenes. He developed a love of the sea and is probably best known as a painter of marine subjects. Sessions painted images of numerous locations, from the Bahamas to New England's busy fishing harbors, north to the raw fishing grounds of Nova Scotia, and ultimately to the Navajo reservations in New Mexico. Not only do his works document important World War II historical events, they visually portray and convey the spirit of the American fighting forces in both the Pacific and European campaigns, commencing with the bombing of Pearl Harbor, followed by D-Day Europe through to the final phases of the Pacific war, such as Jimmy Doolittles daylight bombing raids of the Japanese mainland to the unconditional surrender of the Japanese military. The Chicago Tribune Newspaper utilized his talents and Sessions is considered to be the greatest "brush reporter" of World War II. His works can be found in Presidential collections, numerous important corporate collections and military establishments throughout the country. Sessions created numerous wartime advertisements. Examples are a 1943 Willys Jeep ad showing the Coast Guard at Guadalcanal, and a Borg-Warner ad in 1945 showing the mass production of radiators and clutches for motorized warfare manufactured in Detroit. His work is highly collectible in the field of Militaria WWII, 1939-1945. In 1962 the New York Graphic Society commissioned him to make four paintings, reproductions of which were distributed as part of the Society's Works of Masters Group. Many of his other paintings have been reproduced over the years, issued as posters and as high quality reprints on watercolor paper. Sessions was married in Chicago, Illinois in 1946 to Chrysanthy Deamanthopulos. Although very prolific in the style of John Whorf and Ogden Pleissner, he unfortunately destroyed much of his own work. He died on November 14, 1962 in Chicago at the age of 80.

Les Peters Antelope Miniature Painting

Lot # 859 (Sale Order: 859 of 1396)

2 3/4" by 3 3/8" framed. Leslie Hamilton (Les) Peters (1916 - 2010) was active/lived in Montana, New York. Leslie Peters is known for Wildlife and mountain landscape pain...moreting, sculpture, mural. Leslie Hamilton "Les" Peters, 93, an Army veteran and longtime Great Falls artist, died of natural causes Thursday at his daughter's home in Boise, Idaho. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date in Great Falls. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Cremation Society of Idaho in Boise. The family of Leslie Hamilton Peters announces his passing at home with his daughter Lindsey and her husband Rich Linford, in Boise, Idaho, on the evening of Dec. 2, 2010. Les lived a long and wonderful life, leaving an amazing legacy through his artwork and his work at helping to establish the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Mont. Les was born July 18, 1917, in Great Falls. As a child, he loved the time he spent with his family at their cabin in the Little Belt Mountains east of Great Falls. He attended the University of Montana for a year and studied for one year at the University of Oregon before serving in the Army with the 11th Cavalry on the Mexican-California border. In 1942, the Cavalry was disbanded and Les was transferred to an infantry division, later serving in France and Germany with the 13th Armored Division in World War II. During his time in the Army, he met the love of his life, Barbara Lyons, of New York. Les and Barby were married in August of 1945. They moved to New York where Les studied for a year at the Art Students League and the Central Park School of Art. He and Barby returned to Great Falls, where they raised five daughters. Les immersed himself in the life he loved, seeing and painting wildlife and the Western lifestyle. Les continued to paint and sculpt throughout his life, giving generously of his time and talents, becoming a mentor and friend to many. On most days, Les could be found painting at his brick studio in Great Falls. Even though he may have been in the process of finishing up a painting to get it sent off to a gallery or art patron, he always pushed back his easel to welcome visits from his friends and those interested in seeing his artwork and extensive collection of Native American artifacts. Les's beautiful artwork can be found throughout Montana and in private collections throughout the United States. Some of Les's greater accomplishments were a 90-foot mural for the Florence Hotel in Missoula, which now hangs at the Missoula airport, dioramas in the State Historical Society in Helena and a small painting that was presented to President Eisenhower. He is survived by his five daughters: Suzy Peters (Bob Ruch) of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Deb Cole (Bob) of Missoula, Mont., Cindy Hilderbrand (Martell) of Billings, Mont., and Lindsey Linford (Rich), and Margot Nye (Tracy) of Boise, Idaho; grandchildren, Troy, Libby and Ford Clary, Travis and Michael Cole, Ryan and Abby Linford and Landon, Emily, Logan and Connor Nye; great-grandchildren, Parker and Whitney Clary; his sister, Mildred Duncan; and several nieces and nephews.

Alexander Francois Loemans Oil Painting

Lot # 867 (Sale Order: 867 of 1396)

Unsigned. Attributed to Alexander Francois Loemans. 28" by 31 1/2" framed. Has been cleaned and restored. Inpainting is evident and present throughout the painting. Alexa...morender Francois Loemans (c.1816 - 1898) was active/lived in New York / Canada, France, Netherlands. Alexander Loemans is known for Landscape, genre, portrait. Alexander Francois Loemans (pron: loo-mahns) is a painter about whom very little is known. He was born in the Netherlands or of Dutch descent, but most of his known works were painted in Canada (Ontario, Manitoba) and the northern United States (New York State, Minnesota). Some works show tropical landscapes and a native woman from the Andes, and it is assumed that he visited Peru or another South American country in the Andes region. The main body of his work consists of landscape paintings, and Loemans worked on the Hudson River, at St. Anthony Falls, on the Minnesota River, in Ontario and Manitoba. His landscapes are both small scale and sweeping, both idyllic and dramatic. The latter effect is expressed in thundering river waters, threatening skies and stormy winds. In his western landscapes small figures of Indians are often placed. Works by Loemans are curated at the Minnesota Historical Society, Minneapolis Public Library, the Museum of Fine Arts of St. Petersburg, Florida, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ontario, and the New Brunswick Museum.

Carl Clemens Moritz Rungius Oil Painting

Lot # 868 (Sale Order: 868 of 1396)

Backside reads Sketch for a Moose Painting by Carl Rungius. 9" by 12" unframed. 20 3/8" by 23 1/4" framed. Has a few minor areas of inpainting as shown under black light....more Carl Clemens Moritz Rungius (1869 - 1959) was active/lived in New York, Wyoming / Canada. Carl Rungius is known for Wildlife and landscape painting, illustration, etching. Born near Berlin, Germany, Carl Rungius became one of America's most noted wildlife artists, usually working in plein air or directly from nature. His grandfather was a taxidermist and animal hunter, which gave him early exposure to this subject matter. He was also a hunter of big game from childhood, and eventually his lifestyle merged with his art. He studied art in Berlin at the Berlin School of Art, the Academy of Fine Arts, and the School of Applied Arts, and one of his teachers was Paul Meyerheim. His career as a painter began in Berlin in 1889, and much of his early work was in the style of German Romanticism and Realism. He arrived in the United States from his native Rixdorf in 1894, and settled in New York City. He did illustrations for popular magazines, but by 1904 was focused on fine art, and by 1913, was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design. He became a full member in 1920. He fell in love with the Northwest and West, and much of his painting and hunting career of over fifty years was spent packing into the forests and high country of Montana, Wyoming, Arizona, the Yukon, and Canadian Rockies. His specialty was big game such as mountain goats, sheep, deer, and antelope in dramatic landscape settings. In 1895, he took his first trip West, heading to Wyoming and Yellowstone. He spent nearly four months on a ranch in northwest Wyoming where "he gained the first true inspirations for his life's work of depicting western life and animals". (Hassrick 124). He was a big-game hunter, and then did paintings from the trophies. In late September of that same trip, Rungius visited Yellowstone Park from where he apparently did sketches but no extant paintings from those sketches resulted when he returned to his studio in Brooklyn, New York in November. It is thought that the reason he did no Yellowstone paintings was because no rifles were allowed in the Park. However, from memory he did other paintings in Academic style with heavy, rich color and tight detailing--much in contrast to the prevailing impressionism. Rungius returned to Wyoming many times in the future, but this first trip was the turning point in his career in that it directed his focus to painting wildlife. Ultimately it was the Canadian Rockies that held him, and, living in New York most of the year, he built a summer studio home, "The Paintbox" in Banff, Alberta in 1922, and Theodore Roosevelt became a great admirer and collector of his work. After the artist's death in 1959, the Glenbow Foundation maintained his studio as a museum. During these extensive travels, he also became friends with many frontier people and did a series of oil paintings depicting their life. These works, of which there were not many completed, are much sought after for their accuracy and sense of spontaneity. The artist died in New York City.

Title is Castle Geyser Fire Hole Basin Yellowstone National Park Montana. 19 3/8" by 23 3/8" framed. Has a few small spots of inpainting, was recently cleaned. William Lo...moreuis Sonntag, Sr. (1822 - 1900) was active/lived in Ohio, New York. William Sonntag Sr is known for Wilderness landscape painting, often allegorical. A native of East Liberty, Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh, William Sonntag was a landscape painter associated with the Hudson River School. He is best remembered for his romantic depictions of the American wilderness and "idealized visions of classical Italian ruins" that "reflect the influence of the eighteenth-century neoclassical tradition of English literature and painting" (Zellman, 195). He pursued his art career despite parental objections, and in the 1840s moved to Cincinnati where it is thought he studied at the Cincinnati Academy of Fine Arts under Godfrey Frankenstein. From the early 1840s to the mid 1850s, he had a studio in Cincinnati and made numerous painting trips in the Ohio River Valley and into the mountains of West Virginia and Kentucky. His style of grandeur, sweeping vistas, and dramatic renderings was much influenced by Thomas Cole. In Cincinnati, his store-front gallery exhibition got the attention of a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad official who commissioned Sonntag to paint a series of landscapes along the B & O railroad route. The artist combined his railroad painting trip with his honeymoon. Sonntag's work gained popularity because of their positive reception in the Western Art Union shows. In 1853, he first traveled to Europe, and returned in 1855 for a year's study in Florence, Italy. Upon his return, he settled in New York City. The latter part of his career was in New York from which he and his wife traveled frequently to New England and Italy. He created panoramas with John C. Wolfe depicting Milton's Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, and he also traveled with Arthur Tait painting Catskill landscapes. In 1861, he became an associate member of the National Academy of Design and exhibited his work regularly there for the next 40 years. He died in New York City in 1900.
