Roy Andersen Indian Oil on Board Painting

Lot # 777 (Sale Order: 776 of 1263)

Title is Crow. 5" by 7" unframed, 12 1/2" by 15" framed. Roy H. Andersen (1930 - 2019) was active/lived in Arizona, New Hampshire. Roy Andersen is known for Indian-wester...moren genre, landscape, mural. Known as a western painter, Roy Andersen did paintings of Crow, Cheyenne, and Apache Indians. He began his career living in Chicago and New York and working as an illustrator. He did numerous covers for Time Magazine including portraits of Albert Einstein and Prince Fahd. He also did illustrations for National Geographic magazine, and did a stamp series on Dogs and American Horses, and in 1984 and 1985, won Stamp of the Year Award. As a muralist, he has filled commissions for the National Park Service, the Royal Saudi Naval Headquarters, and the E.E. Fogelson Visitor Center at Pecos National Monument in New Mexico. To pursue his talent for painting, Roy Anderson went West, living in Arizona and settling in Cave Creek. In 1990, he was voted official artist for Scottsdale's Parada del Sol, the "world's largest" horse-drawn parade commemorating the Old West. Andersen grew up on an apple farm in New Hampshire and learned about Indian customs from his many hours spent at the Chicago Museum of Natural History. He is meticulous about being historically accurate in his paintings. Of him it was written: "There are no 'happy accidents' in an Andersen painting. He has a knowledge of his subject that is attained only through extensive research. You will not find an Apache medicine bag around a Sioux warrior's neck nor a Cheyenne carrying a rifle that is a bit too 'modern'. What you will see is accuracy, an almost uncanny sense of composition and color harmony and a strength of drawing that is remarkable. " (Dickerson) His training is from the Chicago Academy of Fine Art and the Art Center School of Los Angeles. Influenced by a cowboy uncle from Nebraska, he often painted cowboy scenes that his art teachers said were passe. For thirty years, he was an illustrator for National Geographic, Time magazine and Sports Illustrated and lived in New York and Chicago. And then he "went West looking for peace and a place where he could be his own man in both his life and his art" (Prix de West, 14). He lived in Arizona and Texas. In 1989, he was voted into membership into the Cowboy Artists of America*, a group from whom he has received recognition at the annual exhibitions: Oil Painting Award, Silver, 1999 and Drawing and Other Media, Silver, 2000.

Paul Surber Indian Encampment Gouache Painting

Lot # 783 (Sale Order: 782 of 1263)

Title is On the Little Blackfoot. 5" by 11" unframed. 13 1/8" by 18 3/8" framed. Paul Surber (Born 1942) is active/lives in Montana, New Mexico. Paul Surber is known for ...moreFrontier genre, Indians and landscape painting. Paul Surber was born in Redlands CA., in 1942. His first encounter with Indians was in a Parade when he was five years old. Attracted to the colorful and ornate costumes, he went home to draw with his crayons what he had seen. Paul has been drawing and painting Indians ever since. He is known for paintings of Indians and landscapes in oil, acrylic, and gouache. He has spent much of his life living close to the source of his inspiration, the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana and the Taos Pueblo in New Mexico. Surber now divides his time between Montana and Arizona. Paul has had so many great influences in his lifetime, from a childhood of roaming a museum as a young boy. Once a week his mother would drop him off with a sack lunch, which he would hide in the corner, as he spent the day wandering through the museum with admiration for the newest exhibit. Then a teacher realized that Paul, at a young age, had a learning disability and bought for him his first book on cowboys and Indians. The book instantly caught his interest and making it easier for Paul to learn to read. At a Fourth of July parade featuring Native American costumes Paul’s artistic imagination come to life. He was just five years old. Paul Surber made his way through life. As fate would have it he met an old German master artist who recognized his potential and with great discipline taught him that a good painting came from a good monochrome. He has used this method ever since. He created life long friendships in the art world, most were icons in their knowledge of Indian tribes and customs, which exposed him to original Indian artifacts. He would photograph and revisit time and time again to make sure his vision was represented as accurate as possible. At first, Paul started selling to the public his landscapes in gouache. He would travel mostly in Montana photographing locations along a river, mountain ranges or the prairies which the Indian tribes where believed to have traversed. Then he would add to the painting his vision of teepees, people, horses, drying racks and so on. He then moved to figurative paintings, first with a monochrome then finish with oil or acrylics. Paul’s greatest works are these portraits of chiefs, warriors and sometimes just the common native people. His discipline is never to paint without knowledge and deep understanding of the Native American culture.

Monte Dolack Personal Autographed License Plate

Lot # 796 (Sale Order: 795 of 1263)

Autographed Custom Montana License Plate, as used and Designed by Monte Dolack. Monte Dolack (Born 1950) is active/lives in Montana. Monte Dolack is known for Poster illu...morestration, landscape and wildlife painting. A native of Great Falls, Monte Dolack grew up surrounded by the same sweeping vistas and big sky that inspired Charlie Russell. His love of Montana and passion for the West's diverse landscapes and wildlife are evident in the images he creates and the commissions he undertakes. After studying art at Montana State University and The University of Montana, Monte opened his first studio in 1974, beginning a career in fine art and graphics. His best known early works - wild animals wreaking havoc in human homes - comprise his Invaders Series, exploring the myths of the West and how we view our relationship with our environment. The irresistible appeal of these images helped build Monte's national reputation and continues to attract collectors. Monte has been the recipient of a number of prestigious awards in the course of his career, and his work is part of the collection of the Library of Congress, the American Association of Museums, the National Wildfire Foundation and numerous other museums and corporations. Recent exhibitions include The Montana Exhibition, Manawatu Art Museum, New Zealand; Artists of the American West, Bank of Ireland Arts Centre, Dublin, Ireland, and The Kumamoto Prefectural Art Museum, Kumamoto, Japan. Monte's work was chosen to be included in The North American Print Biennial, Boston, MA and New American Paintings, a Western States competition sponsored by the Open Studio Press as well as five major museums in China including the National Art Museum of Bejing, as part of the New West Exhibition. In 2011 he exhibited at the Palace of Nations at the United Nations, Geneva Switzerland. A love of the natural world, combined with his exuberant curiosity and travel experiences, has shaped the content of Monte's imagery. Blending mythology, technology and elements from nature, his work is infused with a sense of humor and irony. Monte's keen interest in environmental issues has lead to commissions for the Nature Conservancy, Defenders of Wildlife and Trout Unlimited as well as over 200 posters and prints for various organizations. In addition to his acrylic, oil and watercolor painting, Monte continues to pursue his interest in traditional printmaking, having created numerous original lithographs. Since 1993, with his wife, Mary Beth Percival and staff, he operates a flourishing gallery in downtown Missoula.
