Colt Third Type NM Breechloading Pkt Revolver

Lot # 25 (Sale Order: 26 of 782)

Colt Third Type New Model Breechloading Pocket Revolver, #954, .38 RF cal., 4.5'' barrel, blue and case hardened finish, brass backstrap and triggerguard, with one-piece ...morewalnut grips. Originally mfg'd as a cartridge revolver and not a true conversion of a Colt 1862 Pocket Navy. 1871-72 patent dates. Going forward after the disastrous fire of 1864, Colt scrounged up as many undamaged parts as they could, and using their limited remaining machinery they produced as many of these hybrid pistols as possible to stay solvent until the factory could be retooled and new designs implemented. With at least seven major variants and a few interesting sub-variants they and, being reasonably priced, these can make for a most interesting collecting adventure. Condition is fine with approx. 50%+ thinning original finish, and trace silver plate in protected areas of triggerguard. Moderately knackered grips with some losses at forward edges but still holding on to approx. 70% original varnish. All matching visible numbers with mostly vivid cylinder scene. Nice action, very good bore. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)
