Chance'', approx. .65 cal., 10.5'' octagon barrel, lightly engraved lockplate, hammer, triggerguard and upper tang; Germ...morean silver mounting, gray finish, checkered wood stock. Top of barrel marked ''Imported by Whittemore and Blair''. Wm. Chance & Son mfg'd guns in London from 1830-1860 and was a major supplier for the American Fur Co. from 1834-1845. Condition is good overall showing silver and brass inlays on the barrel. Stock shows numerous marks and dings, visible but well worn checkering, with two cracks and repairs on each side, and nickel silver pair of pheasants inlaid to left. Lock does not stay on cock. A rare and unusual pistol that could have Indian trade association. Est.: $600-$800. (Antique)

Cased Pair of French Target Pistols, retailed by LePage, ca. mid-19th Century, approx. .50 cal., 9.5'' original blue octagonal barrels, nicely engraved throughout, fluted...more walnut stocks with raise carved engraving, and fancy engraved butt caps. Top of each barrel is marked ''Fni par LePage Moutier a Paris''. Each pistol is marked ''1'' and ''2'' at breech. Both pistols are proofed "(circle)/ELG". Condition is very good overall for their age. Pistol 1 retains approx. 60%-70% original blue remaining showing rust and discoloration to the balance. Stock is near excellent. Pistol 2 retains approx. 80% original blue remaining with the same rust and discoloration to the balance; stock is very good with only normal marks from handling. There is a French proofmark on reverse side of each pistol. Cased in French-fitted mahogany case with all accoutrements except flask; includes wrench, mould and hammer. Case lid is missing inlaid plaque and shows normal wear and a lengthwise crack to lid. Small cracks and a piece of wood is missing to one side of case. Est.: $3,500-$5,000. (Antique)

Pair of John Probin Best Quality Flintlock Duelers, .56 cal., 10.5'' barrels, brown finish, checkered full-length walnut stocks. Mfg'd ca. 1780-1790. Both pistols are ma...morerked on the top flat near the breech with a gold inset poincon naming the maker as ''John Probin/Birm./Crown'', with ''J. Probin'' engraved on the lockplate. Gold band at the breech, fixed dovetailed rear sight and brass dovetailed front sight. Both pistols are equipped with a 10.5'' swamped muzzle twist barrel bearing the Birmingham firing and view marks with the word twisted on the bottom barrel flat. Goose head cocks with roller frizzen locks with rain proof pans, gold vent holes and half cock safeties. Engraved iron triggerguards with pineapple finials and finger rests. Stocks are fitted with silver wedge escutcheons, engraved iron thimbles and steel tipped ramrods. Condition is very good. Barrels have been cleaned of all original finish. Stocks have been oiled and waxed but do not appear refinished; checkering is sharp with some minor flattening. Bores are clean and smooth with a spot or two of corrosion. Actions function as designed. Included case appears to be a re-fitted silver chest with the remnants of the original case, containing a bullet mold, and brass repouse oak leaf motif powder can. John Probin was gunmaker to HRH the Prince of Wales ca. 1780-1813, and succeeded by Purdy. Est.: $8,000-$10,000. (Antique)

Historical Cased Set of Revolutionary War Era Flintlock Pistols

Historical Cased Set of Flintlock Pistols belonging to Revolutionary War Officer Steven Tucker of Woodstock, Connecticut. Pistols are approx. .64 cal., with 9'' barrels....more The initials ''S T'' and the date 1776 are minutely engraved on the breach of each pistol along with delicate scrollwork. Lockplate is marked ''Gatehouse'' (presumably a rare maker as not found in Sellers' book of gun makers or any other similar publications.) Pistols are in very good condition for their age. Stocks are equally very good as well, with original checkering but exhibiting small dings and mars, and hairline cracks at one escutcheon lock and lockplate screw on one example. Actions are extremely good and tight as they remain in their original flintlock state. The pair are housed in their original walnut box with approx .40 cal. bullet cavity mold. Top lid has three age cracks, and the original brass escutcheon is period engraved ''Lt. Stephen Tucker / Woodstock Conn''. Lt. Steven Tucker was born Nov. 25, 1732 in Milton, Mass. and died in 1808 in Woodstock, Conn. He was originally a quartermaster in (Backus) 4th Light Horse Reg't, which was established in May 1776. Later in 1776 Tucker commanded the 11th Reg't of the Connecticut State Militia. A copy of records and lists of those under his command are included in this extremely rare and historical offering. Engraved with monogram ''A/D'' and ''E Lefaure, Bte. A Paris'' on top strap, ''No 11,943T'' on right side of frame, ''Tranter's / Patent'' on loading lever, ''F.O'' on left side of frame behind loading lever. Frame and barrel are line engraved around the entire margin. Cylinder is marked on four chambers with the London View mark and on one chamber with the firing proof. Pistol is presented in its original green velvet line case bearing a brass monogram plate engraved ''A/D'', with bullet mould, tin of French caps, C&J.W. Hawksley copper powder flask, tin of grease (hardened), ebony pistol rod, glass oil bottle, and leather cap pouch which still retains paper labels from Tranters Manufacturers; inside of lid is marked ''E. Lefaure / Paris''. Condition is near excellent retaining approx. 98% original silver plate finish with the loss limited to the underside of the top strap and face plate. Grips are near perfect with a couple of light flats to the checkering points. Silver-plated butt cap with floral engraved screw heads shows minor dents near one of the screws. Action functions as designed; hammer is equipped with a spur that assists with dropping the hammer from full cock. Bore shows evidence of firing but is near mint. This is one of the nicest Tranters we have seen. You may be able to find one with more embellishment but not in better condition. Est.: $5,000-$7,000. (Antique)

Civil War Era 2nd Model LeMat Two-Barrel Revolver, #804, .42 cal./20 ga. cals., 6.75'' octagon pistol barrel, 5'' round shotgun barrel. Mfg'd 1864. Barrel marked ''Col. ...moreLeMat BTE, s.g.d.g. Paris'' on top flat, and marked ''804 / *LM'' on right flat. Frame is marked ''804''; cylinder is marked ''804'', engraved with a roped border around the circumference at the front. Ramrod is present in the loading lever. Condition is antique very good with no original finish remaining. Pistol functions as designed. All surfaces exhibit a light grey patina with areas of light surface corrosion. All lettering is crisp and readable, and edges are sharp. All visible numbers match. No parts appear to have been replaced. Grips are intact with a bit of shrinkage near the frame on the left panel. Barrel assembly fits tight to the frame. Checkering is flattened with some dents but no losses. Pistol bore exhibits strong lands and grooves with some roughness. Shotgun barrel has some roughness and areas of pitting. A uniquely designed hard-to-find sidearm and scarce in any condition. Est.: $6,000-$8,000. (Antique)

Breechblock is ma...morerked ''Roden Improved Snider Patent''; lock is marked ''Tower''. Consignor states that a Col. Richard B. Roden was associated with Snider in the development of the Snider Breechloading conversion of the Pattern 58 Enfield rifle and assisted Snider's widow in settling the royalty rights with the British Government. This Roden's Snider Patent Improvement marked rifle is thought to be the only known example extant. From the New York Public Library Archives and Manuscripts section the following documents are available: John Vaughan Snider papers include 1867, power of attorney granted to John Vaughan Snider by his brothers. 1868, Sept. 28. Deed of compromise between Richard Brown Roden of the 1st part, John V. Snider (et al) re the patents for the construction of breech loading fire-arms. 1870: papers re his patent on a combined holder and drip catcher. Printed material and photographs of rifles complete the papers. Breechblock is marked ''Roden Improved Snider Patent''. Lock is marked ''Tower''. Condition is near excellent, with all steel parts showing a grey/brown patina and age spotting throughout. Stock is very good with minor handling marks and slight scrapes to the right side. Enfield Pattern 1853 Percussion Musket, NVSN, blue finish, .577'' bore 39'' round barrel with 3-groove rifling, folding rear ladder...more sight stamped ''L.A.'' on base of ladder with graduations marked in 100 yard increments to 800 yards; small blade front sight is on a block riser, with ''L.A.Co.'' and London 25 ga. proofmarks on the barrel. Lock is case colored and hammer has a half-cock safety notch; lockplate has a ''(CROWN)/V.R'' symbol and is dated ''1865'' with an overstamped ''5'' above ''L.A.Co.'' Rifle has a full musket stock of varnished French walnut with sharp diamond checkered and bordered grip and forend, brass triggerguard, buttplate and forend cap, blued sling swivels, three barrel bands and a 39'' steel ramrod. Right side of stock has a roundel impressed ''LONDON ARMOURY/1866/36.KING Wm STREET.E.C.'' with a notable difference in font style of the two ''6'' stamps. Weight is 8-5/8 lbs. Condition is very good with a strong mainspring. Bore is oxidized brown with patchy rust that may clean somewhat. Barrel, slings and bands have approx. 30% blue drifting to brown with light overall oxidation and pitting. Case colors have toned dark gray-brown, buffed ramrod has pinprick pitting and freckling, hammer screw is marred, and brass furniture has been cleaned. Stock has scattered dings and scratches with a light revarnish. Overall, an interesting musket with an unusual combination of stamps and dates appearing to be from the narrow time period between the end of the Civil War and the start of the Snider-Enfield Conversion era. Stamped on left side of lock with ''(eagle)/U.S.Springfield'' in two lines, and ''U.S. Model 1884'' on top of breechblock. Proof and view stamps on left side of barrel; firing proof cartouche at wrist. Cartouche at side of wrist stamped ''SWP'' for Inspector Samuel W. Porter and ''1889'' in box. Complete with ramrod. Condition overall is very good with the metal retaining most of its bluing showing some thinning at the muzzle. Wood shows a lightly sanded area across the left side of the buttstock, some fading across the toe, and scattered handling marks and dents. Hammer and breechblock operate smoothly, bore is good with darkening in the grooves. Est.: $700-$1,000. (Antique)

U.S. Model 1861 Trenton Contract Percussion Rifle-Musket, .58 cal., 40'' round barrel, hardwood stock with three barrel bands, standard sights, with ramrod. Lock is mark...moreed ''U.S. / Trenton'' and dated 1863; top of barrel is dated 1864; left side of barrel with ''V P'' markings (eagle's head is no longer visible), with additional ''N.J.'' markings. Top edge of buttplate with U.S. and ''15'' numeral. Rifle was mfg'd by J.T. Hodge and A.M. Burton at the Trenton Locomotive and Machine Co., in Trenton NJ, ca. 1863-1864, with a quantity of 11,495 produced. Condition is very good. Metal surfaces with an overall dark patina, with the exception of the lock that is slightly lighter near the U.S. Trenton marking. Stock with normal bruising and mars from age, in addition to what appears to be newer or fresher scuffs and scratches to left side of buttstock; stock shows a few light fissures around the lock, upper tang and left side retaining screw. Forward sling swivel is bent. Stock is missing metal end cap. Triggerguard is loose. Action is tight, bore is dark with nice rifling and in need of a thorough cleaning. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. Stamped on side of lock with ''(eagle)/U.S. Springfield'' in two lines, and ''U.S. MODEL 1873'' on top of breech block; proof and view stamps on left side of barrel; firing proof cartouche and rack number at wrist. Cartouche at wrist stamped''SWP'' for inspector Samuel W. Porter and ''1884'' in box. Complete with ramrod. Condition overall is excellent with the barrel retaining approx. 95% finish; lock retains approx. 85% finish with a small area of loss at the front lockplate screw and slight frosting on the side of the sight base. L...moreock marked in front of hammer ''US/H.Aston'', and ''Middtn / Conn / 1847'' behind hammer. No inspection or proofmarks are visible. Hand stamped on backstrap ''Capt George C. Westcott 11 Regt U.S. Infantry'' (barely legible). Along with a 5.5'' silver plate nicely engraved in script ''Carrie / from her Father / Capt. George C. Westcott, / 2d Regt U.S. Infantry, / From the City of Mexico / 1848.'' Capt. Westcott is listed in the Complete Roster of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) as a Veteran. Condition is fair showing heavy use and handling. Stock shows a few hairline cracks with several gouges and marks. Brass furniture with several dents and discoloration. Springfield Armory Model 1873 Single Shot Trapdoor Rifle, #243969, .45-70 cal., 32'' barrel, blue finish, walnut two-band full-length stock, with two-piece standard sight...more and sight protector installed; rear sight is the 5th form buckhorn type. Breechblock is marked ''U.S. Model 1873'', and marked ''US'' on buttplate. Condition is near excellent retaining approx. 90% original rust blue finish which shows an even brown in a strong raking light. Breech and breech plug retain approx. 95% original case colors. Ramrod is the second style. Stock is in excellent original condition with strong cartouche ''SWP/1883''. ''P'' stock mark remains behind the triggerguard. Stock is fitted with an ''Officer's Model'' type grip adapter, which is screwed into the rear triggerguard screw hole (could easily be replaced with a stock screw with no evidence of the adapter having been mounted). Action is tight, bore is bright and shows little evidence of firing. Est.: $1,250-$1,750. (Antique)

Antique Trapper's Case, with tacked and embossed leather to lid which reads ''Va.Ms 1849'', stenciled ''M.S'' to front, with brass hardware and green felt interior. Insi...morede of lid has been converted to hold the included 1842 percussion pistol in leather holder and strap. Case includes: (1) European military French or Belgian pistol that has been converted from flintlock to percussion, with captured ramrod; wood stock shows splits and repairs and brass tacks, with ill-fitting lock. (2) 19th Century powder horn marked ''I have hunt, fish, and trapped in VA and KY, and Mar.la since yr 1847. Mt. in Va please.'' (the balance illegible). (3) Hand-drawn map of Kentucky and surrounding areas, marked ''Compiled and Drawn by James D. Lee'' and dated 1799. The map is beautifully hand colored, measuring approx. 23''x17.5'', on paper backed with cloth. Also included are three animal traps, folding cribbage board with cards, tin cup, small pocket telescope, fork and spoon, compass, and tin with fishing line. The case is in good condition showing heavy wear and possibly re-painted at some point. All small items are well used but with excellent character. A great ensemble. Est.: $1,500-$2,500/lot.

Civil War Era Starr Percussion Single Shot Saddlering Carbine, NVSN, approx. .54 cal., 21'' round barrel faceted by a single brass band, cartouched replacement walnut sto...moreck and forend, metal buttplate, and correct front and rear sights. Considered scarce with approx. 20,500 mfg'd in Yonkers, NY between 1862-1865. The Starr Carbine was issued primarily to Union Cavalry troops in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and New York. Right side of receivers marked ''Manufactured by / Mass. Arms Co. / Chicopee Falls'', lower tang marked ''1865/24597'', upper tang marked ''26919'', left side of receiver marked ''Edward Maynard / Patentee/May 27, 1851, / Dec. 6, 1859''. Tang mounted Vernier sight marked ''Patented / Jan. 18, 1876''. Condition is near excellent with approx. 99% brilliant case colors. Both barrels exhibit approx. 98% blue colors. Barrel #1 is marked ''40 60'' at the breech; lower barrel is marked ''24597'', equipped with two-blade flip-up rear sight and screw adjustable front sight missing the blade; near mint bore. Barrel #2 shows no caliber marking, #24597 on underside of barrel, equipped with fixed open rear sight and flip-up hooded front sight missing the un-hooded blade; bore condition shows much more use and is bright but with minor areas of pitting. Receiver and both levers and hammer all exhibit brilliant case colors. Approx. 1/8'' of the hammer tang is missing. All stocks are in very good condition with flattening to some of the checkering points and very minor pressure dents and surface scratches. Nickel-plated brass Swiss butt retains approx. 80% of its plating with minor scratches. Custom case contains reloading equipment and bullet molds for both calibers, along with spanners and rifle rods. Est.: $4,000-$6,000. (Antique)

Remington Model 4-S Military Model Rolling Block Rifle, #4668 on stock, .22 Short/Long cal., 28.25'' blue barrel, case hardened receiver marked on left side ''Military Mo...moredel'', straight walnut stock, forend and upper handguard that is marked ''4668'' on bottom edge of the wrist, as well as ''14''; smooth Remington UMC steel buttplate, barrel stud for bayonet attachment, with dovetailed blade front sight and notched rear sight, with three sling swivels. Condition is fine overall retaining approx. 95% blue and case colored finish with some muting to the case colors at the upper tang and bottom edge of triggerguard; right side with patch of fine oxidation. Barrel and receiver markings are clear and well defined. Stock and forend with shallow dings and scratches, including one more noticeable vertical gouge to right side of buttstock. Action is excellent, bore is very good with occasional mild erosion near front half. Est.: $1,400-$1,800. (C&R)

Grips are good with some open grain and dents on right panel and wear losses to toes on both sides. Action is tight, timing and lock up are good, bore is dark with strong rifling. Est.: $700-$900.
