Fine Pair Provincial English Perc. Target Pistols

Lot # 3 (Sale Order: 3 of 546)      

Very Fine Pair of Provincial English Percussion Target Pistols, by Beckley of Oxford, each pistol having a browned 8-1/2'' octagonal twist barrel of .54'' bore with 13-groove rifling, small notched rear sight and front silver bead, double platinum breech bands and platinum plug. The locks are case colored and engraved with subtle triangle bordered floral and vine patterns which follow to the upper tangs, polished blue triggerguards and ''KA'' initialed finials; hammers are early percussion period stylized dolphins with half-cock notches and sliding safety latches. The lacquered English walnut stocks have medium figure grain patterns with contoured silver nose caps and barrel wedge plates; grips have finely executed and proportioned flat diamond bordered checkering with rose engraved silver bases inlaid in the scalloped grip caps; upper wrists have very small vacant rectangular silver initial shields; ramrod tail pipes have a polished blue finish matching the triggerguards and lower tangs; ramrods are ebony with brass tips and ferrules (Note: Ramrods appear to be by the same maker with one being fractionally longer than the other and having a slightly different tip and ferrule style). Pistols weigh in the range of 31-32 ozs. each. Overall condition of the pair is very fine, appearing generally well maintained over time. Mainsprings are strong, muzzles are sharp; bores have distinct rifling with brown oxidation; locks have a cleaned silver patina with traces of color on the hammers. Blued finishes remain 50% with light oxidation. Stock lacquer covers earlier scratches, powder marks and dents, wedge plates have hammer marks, and a small section of the stock is chipped from one pistol in front of the lockplate. Condition is excellent. Barrel retains much of its original fluid steel colors with one small area of light pitting to right side barrel flat. Hammer and lockplate have gone bright. Inscribed Colt Model 1849 London Pocket Model Percussion Revolver, #9132, .31 ball, 5'' barrel, blue and case hardened finish, one-piece walnut grips, with ''(crown)/V'' proofmarks at cylinder and barrel lug. Buttstrap is retailer marked ''C. O'Neil'' in script. Mfg'd approx. 1856. Condition is good to very good retaining approx. 10%-15% original finish, with the balance having toned gray. Grips with approx. 35% varnish, light scuffs, but no losses. Markings are crisp and clear. Much of the stagecoach scene is retained on cylinder, with light burring to trigger and hammer screw. Frame to barrel fit has been re-pinned. All matching numbers including wedge. Action functions, bore is fair. Many Colt percussion revolvers were purchased by officers who served in the Crimean War. Left side of breech with ''A&M Machine Works'' markings which are partially visible; the following marks remain clear: ''ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / SMITH'S PATENT / JUNE 23, 1857''. Lower trigger tang marked with ''W''. Serial numbers on lower breech and near hinge on forward portion of the gun are matching. Left side of stock at wrist with clear cartouche. Condition is fine. Barrel retains approx. 70% thinning and toning blue. Breech with scattered dark spotting and trace amounts of case coloring to right side in protected areas. Stock with one fine fissure to left side at wrist, as well as oil darkening and other normal signs of age and wear; there is one small loss at the toe. Unique Peabody Single Shot Sporting Rifle

Unique and Interesting Peabody Single Shot Sporting Rifle, mfg'd by Providence Tool Co., Serial No. 1, .45-50 Peabody Sporting cal., 26'' round blue barrel, case hardened frame, hammer and lever; hooded front sight, standard rear sight, and factory mid-range vernier tang sight; finely checkered black walnut stock and forend, with crescent steel buttplate. Approx. 200 of these sporting rifles were mfg'd in approx. 1869-70 utilizing receivers left over from Canadian and Romanian contracts, at which point they were alternately serialized. Of the 176 or so observed specimens, no two have the same alternate serial number. This rifle is marked ''1''. These sporting rifles were stamped on the receiver face and buttplate. The original serial number prior to sporting rifle production was #5968, which is marked beneath the forend near the breech of barrel and on forward edge of frame just above the serial number ''1''. Condition is excellent with all sights and features factory original to this rifle. Barrel retains approx. 98% of its original rust blue finish, showing only the lightest thinning at muzzle and with traces of blue remaining in chamber area. Case hardened colors have lightly toned a silvery gray, as has buttplate. Stock with mild flattening to checks and light general impressions overall. Action remains crisp and tight, bore is excellent. An outstanding example of an American mid-19th Century sporting rifle, which Peabody experts believe to be the first numbered representation of this model. Est.: $6,500-$8,500. (Antique)...more

Rare Post-Civil War London Armoury Co. Enfield Pattern 1853 Percussion Musket, NVSN, 39'' blue finish, .577'' bore round barrel with 3-groove rifling, folding rear ladder sight is stamped ''L.A.'' on base of ladder with graduations marked in 100 yard increments to 800 yards; small blade front sight is on a block riser, with ''L.A.Co.'' and London 25 ga. proofmarks on the barrel. Lock is case colored and hammer has a half-cock safety notch; lockplate has a ''(CROWN)/V.R'' symbol and is dated ''1865'' with an overstamped ''5'' above ''L.A.Co,''. Rifle has a full musket stock of varnished French walnut with sharp diamond checkered and bordered grip and forend, brass triggerguard, buttplate and forend cap, blued sling swivels, three barrel bands and a 39'' steel ramrod. Right side of stock has a roundel impressed ''LONDON ARMOURY/1866/36.KING Wm STREET.E.C.'' with a notable difference in font style of the two ''6'' stamps. Weight is 8-5/8 lbs. Condition is very good with a strong mainspring. bore is oxidized brown with patchy rust that may clean somewhat. Barrel, slings and bands have approx. 30% blue drifting to brown with light overall oxidation and pitting. Case colors have toned dark gray-brown, buffed ramrod has pinprick pitting and freckling, hammer screw is marred, and brass furniture has been cleaned. Stock has scattered dings and scratches with a light revarnish. Overall, an interesting musket with an unusual combination of stamps and dates appearing to be from the narrow time period between the end of the Civil War and the start of the Snider-Enfield Conversion era. Springfield Armory Model 1873 Single Shot Trapdoor Rifle, #243969, .45-70 cal., 32'' barrel, blue finish, walnut two-band full-length stock, with two-piece standard sight and sight protector installed; rear sight is the 5th form buckhorn type. Breechblock is marked ''U.S. Model 1873'', and marked ''US'' on buttplate. Condition is near excellent retaining approx. 90% original rust blue finish which shows an even brown in a strong raking light. Breech and breech plug retain approx. 95% original case colors. Ramrod is the second style. Stock is in excellent original condition with strong cartouche ''SWP/1883''. ''P'' stock mark remains behind the triggerguard. Stock is fitted with an ''Officer's Model rifle'' type grip adapter, which is screwed into the rear triggerguard screw hole (could easily be replaced with a stock screw with no evidence of the adapter having been mounted). Top of barrel is additionally dated 1863 with ''VP/(eagle's head)''; left side of barrel is marked ''STEEL H.S.L.''; left side of stock with two cartouches on the flat surface just above triggerguard; top of buttplate is marked ''U.S.'' and ''P''. Condition is very good to near fine. Barrel retains approx. 80% darkening blue. Lock and hammer with dark spotting and lock with trace amounts of case coloring remaining. Lock markings remain mostly clear; top of barrel near date with some fine corrosion. Stock with nicely visible cartouche and normal signs of age and wear. Brass hardware with mild even toning.
