Indian Wars U.S. Springfield Model 1873/1877 Trapdoor Saddle Ring Cavalry Carbine, #122370, .45-70 Gov't. cal., 22'' barrel is marked ''V/P/(eagle head)'' at left breech,...more and fitted with a block-blade front sight and adjustable sliding-leaf rear sight (correctly marked ''C'' for Carbine); trapdoor is marked ''U.S./Model/1873'' below hinge; lockplate is marked ''(spread-wing eagle)'' to left of ''U.S./Springfield'' below breechblock latch; side opposite lock is fitted with a sling bar and ring; standard two-piece triggerguard, buttplate marked ''US'' on top tang with sliding door opening to cleaning rod trap in butt (three-piece rod is present), and single spring-retained barrel band; oil-finished walnut halfstock. Mfg'd ca. 1877-78. Condition is very good, the barrel with a later dark-bluish finish over scattered pitting, the balance of the steel parts a gunmetal gray color with silvered case hardening. Triggerguard and buttplate retain 40%-50% blue with scattered erosion. Stock is solid with the expected marks from age and military use. Action is stout; bore is clean with defined rifling. The ''P'' proofmark is present on stock belly, but the ''ESA'' cartouche of Master Armorer Erskine S. Allin is not visible at left wrist. The Model 1877 improvements included a thicker stock wrist and longer comb, cleaning rod butt trap with hinged door, ''low arch'' breechblock, and others. Est.: $2,500-$3,500. (Antique)

British Snider Conversion Infantry Rifle, marked Tower, NVSN, .577 Boxer CF cal., 37'' barrel is marked ''Steel'' and with numerous view and proofmarks at left breech, as...more is receiver; flush steel lockplate marked ''(crown)/V.R'' behind hammer and ''1885/Tower'' ahead; three steel barrel bands (top with sling swivel), sling swivel at front of brass triggerguard, brass buttplate and two lock screw escutcheons, brass nose cap, and slotted/grooved steel cleaning rod. Integral block-blade front and adjustable sliding-leaf rear sights. Nicely figured one-piece European walnut fullstock. Condition is fine showing approx. 85% original blue finish to barrel, pronounced case colors to lockplate, gunmetal gray receiver, and light patina to brass. Smooth and sound stock is marked ''G.D'' to rear of raised area opposite lock. Action is tight and crisp; bore is shiny with distinct rifling. As did most militaries in the late 1860s and early 1870s, Britain chose to adapt many of its obsolete P-1853 percussion arms to the new metallic cartridge system. The highly successful Snider conversion (invented by American Jacob Snider) utilizes a simple side-hinged breechblock with a floating firing pin. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)

Tryon contract, NVSN, .54 cal., 33'' barrel, with brass blade front and dovetailed notch rear ...moresights, is marked ''US/JCB/P'' (the latter in a sunken oval), and ''1848'' on top tang; the beveled-edge lockplate is marked ''Tryon/US'' ahead of the hammer, and ''Philada/PA/1847'' vertically behind; brass furniture including serpentine sideplate, two spring-retained barrel bands (top band of the double-strap type with iron sling swivel), two-piece triggerguard with iron sling swivel at front, and distinctive patchbox with hinged lid opening to trap in butt for spare nipple (present), patches and other spare parts; steel ramrod with brass tulip head; oil-stained walnut fullstock. Mfg'd 1846-48, in quantity of only 5,000 guns. Condition is very good, the barrel, lock and hammer with an overall gunmetal gray color, the brass with a light age patina. Stock is solid with scattered age/use marks and light roughness but generally smooth and with good color; markings are clear, edges are mostly sharp. Lawrence Pat./April 12th, 1859'' on right; serpentine operating lever opens the dropping-block action for cartridge loading and cleaning, and automatic ejection; steel single spring-retained barrel band, trigger, and carbine-style buttplate; oil-stained walnut forend and buttstock without patchbox. Mfg'd ca. 1859-66; converted in 1867 and after. Condition is very good, barrel being a smooth bluish-brown, receiver with case colors ahead of hammer and the balance darkened and silvered; sling ring stock mounting with scratched ''WHS'' initials. Factory-replaced buttstock is smooth and sound with minor use marks, and a sharp ''DFC'' (David F. Clark) inspector's cartouche within a ribbon on left side and another (mostly illegible) above sling ring; the original forearm is smooth with a few dings and two minor losses. Sharps markings on barrel and on left receiver were mostly removed at time of alteration. Action functions smoothly; original 6-groove bore is bright with defined rifling. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. M'ch'n. Wks./Springfield, Mass.'', ''Address/Poultney & Trimble/Baltimore. U.S.A.'' and mounted with a sling bar and ring; blued steel furniture including single barrel band, loop triggerguard with elongated rear tang, trigger, and carbine buttplate; oil-finished two-piece walnut forend and buttstock. Mfg'd 1861-65; most were issued to Union cavalry regiments. When the latch ahead of the trigger is depressed, the blued steel top spring allows the unique bottom-hinged action to break open for loading and cleaning. Condition is excellent, probably unfired, the barrel retaining 97% soft military blue; the top spring, triggerguard and buttplate with most of their deep blue, and the receiver and hammer showing softly mottled case colors. Stocks are solid and mostly smooth, showing only light marks from use and age; buttstock is marked ''H.J'' on left wrist and ''B'' on right. Action is crisp and tight; bore is brilliant with sharp rifling. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique)

Civil War Era British Pattern 1861 Percussion Short Rifle or Musketoon, by Barnett London, NVSN, .58 cal., 24'' barrel has integral blade front and small adjustable three...more-leaf rear sights; flush-mounted lockplate is marked ''Barnett/London'' in two lines under hammer; brass furniture including one-piece triggerguard, two ''eared'' lockplate screw escutcheons, buttplate, and nosecap; single iron barrel band with sling loop; iron trigger, and ramrod with button tip; oil-finished one-piece European hardwood fullstock with sling swivel at belly is marked in an oval cartouche on left side, ''Barnett/Gunmakers/London'', and with two proofmarks behind lower triggerguard tang. Condition is good to very good, the barrel a very deep dark brown with heavy pitting at breech, the other iron parts with an aged brown patina, the brass parts with a deep age patina. Stock is solid and showing the expected scrapes and dings of age and hard military use. Visible markings are clear. Gun is complete but for a missing top barrel band; the front sling loop is a hobbyist replacement. Action does not hold full-cock; smoothbore is clean showing scattered erosion. This is the type of small arm imported during the Civil War for use by Confederate artillery and cavalry units. Est.: $600-$900. (Antique)

Factory replaced buttstock is smooth and sound with minor marks from military use and age, and with a very faint ''DFC'' (David F. Clark) inspector's cartouche within a ribbon on left side and another (partially legible) above sling ring; condition of the original forearm is similar. Stock is smooth and solid showing pleasing grain and color and only minor handling/use marks (heavier on left side between bands) and a fairly sharp inspector's cartouche on left sideplate apron. Correct brass-handled bayonet having a smooth, clean steel blade; matching scabbard with brass frog and drag and flaking but intact leather. Sharps' Pat./Sept. 12th, 1848'' on the left side and ''C. Sharps' Pat./Oct. 16th, 1852'' behind ''R.S. Lawrence Pat./April 12th, 1859'' on right; operating lever opens the dropping-block action for loading paper cartridges and cleaning; single spring-retained steel barrel band, trigger, and carbine-style buttplate; oil-finished walnut forend and buttstock. Mfg'd 1859-66. Condition is very good, the barrel retaining 20% blue blending into brown, the other steel parts a gunmetal gray showing traces of case hardening colors. Stocks are smooth and sound showing only minor marks from use and age and perhaps a later coat of light varnish. Action functions smoothly; bore is bright with sharp rifling. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. Condition is very good, the barrel with a smooth brownish-blue patina and balance of the metal gunmetal gray with all markings sharp. Stock is smooth and solid with the expected light marks of military use and a very clear ''SWP/1884'' cartouche of armory inspector Samuel W. Porter at left wrist. Mfg'd ca. 1863-64; altered ca. 1865-67. Condition is near fine, the steel surfaces having a smooth aged ''arsenal bright'' finish with sharp edges and clear markings. Stock shows the expected dings and scrapes of military use but solid and otherwise without damage. Action is smooth and tight; bore is bright with sharp rifling; patent breechblock functions as designed. A fascinating and effective post-war modernization of an obsolete military arm; the ''Parkers'' of Parkers' Snow & Co. were the progenitors of the famed ''Parker Brothers'' line of American shotguns. Co.'' and ''9/B'' outside and with two proofmarks inside; the flat lockplate is marked ''1860/Enfield'', ''(crown-broad arrow)'' and ''4'' ahead of the hammer and with a large crown over ''V.R'' behind; three steel barrel bands (top with sling swivel); brass triggerguard with sling swivel at front of bow; brass buttplate marked with a proofmark at top screw and a large ''246'' below; two ''eared'' brass sideplate screw escutcheons; slotted steel ramrod having cannelures and a dished square head; oil-stained English hardwood fullstock marked with a circular ''R(crown)M - Enfield'' cartouche over ''1'' on right butt, and ''D G/O V A'' on left. Condition is very good to near fine, the barrel with a smooth blue-brown patina, the barrel bands with much glossy original blue, the other steel parts a clean gunmetal gray, the brass with light age patina, the buttplate with scattered dings. Sharp metal edges and markings throughout. Stock is smooth and sound, with minimal handling/use marks, a nice grain pattern and crisp edges and markings. Action is smooth and sure; bore is bright with sharp rifling. This simple yet brilliant cartridge conversion breech, invented by American Jacob Snider, was widely used until the advent of the Martini-Henry action in the mid-1870s. Est.: $750-$1,500. (Antique)

Sharps' Pat./Oct. 16th, 1852'' behind ''R.S. Lawrence Pat./April 12th, 1859'' on right; serpentine operating lever opens the dropping-block action for cartridge loading and cleaning, and automatic ejection; single spring-retained steel barrel band, trigger, and carbine-style buttplate; oil-stained walnut forend and buttstock without patchbox. Mfg'd ca. 1859-66; converted in 1867 and after. Condition is very good to near fine, the barrel retaining approx. 50% dark blue on the front half, the balance a smooth blue-brown, the case hardened steel parts mostly dark, having silvered out on left side of receiver. Factory replacement buttstock is smooth and sound with minor marks from military use and age, and with a nice ''DFC'' (David F. Clark) inspector's cartouche within a ribbon on left side and another (partially legible) above sling ring; condition of the original forearm is similar. Model markings at barrel breech and Sharps markings on left receiver were removed at time of alteration. Action functions smoothly; sleeved three-groove bore is clean with defined rifling. Oil-stained walnut fullstock with ''SWP/1889'' (armory inspector Samuel W. Porter) rectangular cartouche on left side, encircled ''P'' proof and ''B'' behind pistol grip. Mfg'd ca. 1889-93. Condition is fine and all original, with sharp edges and markings, the barrel retaining a smooth deep military blue finish with cleaned erosion at top of muzzle; the lockplate, triggerguard, nose cap, barrel bands and springs with deep glossy blue, breechblock and tang showing lovely case colors, buttplate showing blue amid light scattered discoloration, pistol-grip gunmetal gray. Stock is solid and smooth with sharp edges, only minor marks, fits ''proud'' and has the correct reddish color. Action is strong and smooth; bore is bright with deep rifling. Russet leather sling is a well-made modern reproduction. Est.: $600-$900. (Antique)

Model 1862 U.S. Naval Cutlass

Model 1862 U.S. Naval Cutlass, with bright 25-7/8'' wide fuller blade, marked at ricasso area with an anchor stamp, and ''U.S.N., D.R., 1862'' inspector's stamps; reverse...more of ricasso area is not marked, but was probably made by Ames Mfg. Co., as they were the main contractor for this model. Handle features a wooden grip covered with leather, twisted wire wrapping having been removed, as was customary with later issue of these cutlasses. Large sheet brass knuckle guard is riveted to the solid brass guard, with a brass pommel cap. There are rack numbers stamped into the quillion area of the crossguard of ''21M, 982''. Additionally, there are inspector's initials ''D.R.'' stamped into top of pommel. OAL is 31.5''. Condition is good with blade retaining most of its factory polish, showing a few edge nicks, and some small areas of heavy pitting that have been cleaned. The guard, basket, and pommel have been polished bright. Leather covering on the grip has a few scuffs and dings commensurate with age. There are remnants of the original leather blade washer. No scabbard. Est.: $500-$700.

GAR Officer's Kepi for the 21st Maine Regt.

Post-Civil War GAR Officer's Kepi for the 21st Maine Regt., that could date from 1865 to 1900. Black wool body with blue wool top, silver eagle buttons, and silver bullio...moren cord chinstrap. Front has heavy silver bullion embroidered laurel wreath with embroidered numbers ''21'' in the center. Top panel has a red wool diamond with heavy silver bullion embroidered border and device in center. The word ''MAINE'' is embroidered below the diamond. Visor is thick black patent leather. Inside has a thin patent leather sweat band, and blue silk lining with a silver printed maker's mark in the center of ''The McLilley & Co.''. There are faint handwritten initials written in top section of inside lining, a bit hard to read, but looks like ''C H W''. Worthy of further research. Small paper-size tag is mostly gone. Condition is very good for a hat of this age, showing some moth holes to the top edge, front of the body, and blue wool center. Outside material has some wear and thinning, but is very sound. Silver bullion embroidery shows age darkening to the silver and remains tight and intact. Silver bullion chinstrap shows age and soiling. There are creases and surface crazing to the patent leather visor on top and bottom. Silk lining shows a few scattered moth nips and soiling from use. Sweat band is in good condition with a slight detachment near the front. The 21st Maine mustered in Oct. 14, 1862 for 9 months service under Col. Elijah D. Johnson. They participated in operations against Port Hudson, Baton Rouge, and Plains Store, and served duty in the advance, assaults, siege, and final surrender of Port Hudson on July 8, 1863. On July 24, 1863 the regiment was ordered home, and were mustered out on August 25, 1863. Est.: $600-$800.

Indian Wars 1881 Pattern U.S. 47th New York Infantry Spiked Helmet. The black wool felt cloth-covered body is decorated with Infantry crossed rifle side buttons, round oa...morekleaf spike base and fluted spike, and shield type front plate. Front plate has an American eagle on top, State of New York shield, the word ''EXCELSIOR'' in a band at the bottom, and separately applied numbers ''47'' in the middle of the shield. There is a small American shield device at the rear with a loop to retain the chinstrap. Chinstrap is a series of concentric circles woven together on a leather band. Around the bottom edge is a thin patent leather covering sewn to the body. Interior has a thin brown leather sweat band and a cloth lining tightly affixed to the body. Center top of the interior has a red leather roundel with maker's mark of ''J.H. McKenney & Co. ,141 Grand St. N.Y.''. Size is 6-3/4. There are two small vent devices on either side. Condition is very good with no damage to the outer black cloth covering, minor cracking to the leather bottom edge, and age toning to the brass fittings. Chinstrap is sound, with age toning to the metal rings. Interior shows age and scuffs to the green inner visors and center lining. New York fielded a lot of regiments in the Civil War, and the 47th Infantry saw service in many battles. Post-Civil War they had many militia regiments serving. This type of helmet was worn from the 1880's until the start of the Spanish American War. Est.: $500-$700.
