Unmarked Pair of Fancy English Flintlock Pistols

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 2 of 842)

Unmarked Pair of Fancy English Flintlock Pistols, in deluxe wood brown material-lined and compartmented hard case, containing accessories including an unmarked brass and copper powder flask, iron single mold (marked "18" on one leg), wood/brass/ivory-colored knob cleaning rod, a key to this case, two small black flints and a compartment filled with lead balls. There is also a fancy uninscribed brass chevron plaque inlaid in the center of the casing's lid and an old crack along the area of the lid's front lip. The finish to both pistols is blued. The two matching flintlock pistols are each approx. .65 cal., with 5-5/8" slightly flared octagon barrels (with finely done rifling). Wood stocks display fancy mountings and grained wood. Special features include fancy engraving on trigger guard, buttplate, inlaid copper decoration in front of the trigger guard and on base of the ramrod retainer. There is also a blank inlaid marker on the back of the wrist of each pistol and two beautifully engraved bases for the left-side action securing screws which are also finely decorated. Mfg. date of these pistols and casing would be estimated at circa early 1800's. Overall condition of these pistols is fair to good with working actions and pleasing dark patina to metal surfaces. Wood stocks are fair, showing several issues, including an old repair to a break at the wrist area that appears to have been done some time ago and at present, does not affect the strength of the wrist; a well-done old repair to the left forend of the same revolver that extends approx. 2" from the top front edge of the forend; the other pistol has repairs to both sides of the forend that are approx. 1-3/4" long; an approx. half-inch well-done sliver replacement supporting the rear base of the left-side action securing screw and two old repairs on the underside of the pistol in front of the trigger guard. There is also a U.S. Inspector's cartouche of "G.G.S" (George G. Saunders) on the front left side of the buttstock. Mfg'd ca. 1864-1865.  Lamson & Co. produced just 1,002 of these carbines under contract for the Federal Gov't in 1864 and they were subsequently delivered in May of 1865. The overall condition of this scarce carbine is near mint showing approx. 97%-98% blued finish and approx. the same percentage of its case colors on those parts. Wood stocks are also near mint showing little handling. Action is crisp, bore is fine with sharp rifling. Hard to find one of these in better condition. Est.: $3,000-$3,500. (Antique)*

Sharps Model 1863 Lever Action Single Shot Carbine

Lot # 22 (Sale Order: 22 of 842)

Interesting Sharps New Model 1863 Single-Shot Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine, #C,161, .52 cal., 22" round barrel, with blued, case hardened and nickeled finish. Wood stocks are smooth varnished hardwood. Markings are particularly important in determining which parts were used in a variety of Models, and there is some disagreement between scholars and students of these rugged carbines, on whether or not various Sharps were re-worked, by whom, and importantly, when particularly they were assembled or re-assembled during the period of the American Civil War. This Sharps is marked on the lockplate "R.S. LAWRENCE PAT." over "APRIL 12th 1859." at the top of the plate, and "C. SHARPS' PAT." over "OCT. 5th 1852" to the rear of the plate behind the hammer; the serial number is stamped on the top rear receiver tang, there is what appears to be a "W" on the top of the buttplate, there is a "C" on the top left flat of the lever, a "C" on the round of the barrel's muzzle and a "B" at the back of the lower tang. The flip-up rear sight also has gradations on the "ladder" plus an R. S. LAWRENCE patent date on the sight base flat. There are also two crisp cartouches on the left forestock under the saddle ring bar (both appearing to be "TWR") and a "DFC" banner cartouche on the left side of the buttstock. Overall condition of this Sharps is fine, as possibly re-finished at some time, with crisp markings. Wood stocks are also fine overall with beautiful graining and majority of varnished finish remaining. Action is crisp, bore is fine with sharp rifling. Est.: $2,500-$2,800. (Antique)
