Spanish Colonial Cup Hilt Rapier

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 807)

Spanish Colonial Cup Hilt Rapier, ca. early to mid-1800s, 36" double-edged narrow blade with a thin fuller running the full length of both sides of the blade, and a 5.75" dia. steel cup with riveted serrated washers on both sides where the blade tang comes thru. Cross guard is round steel that tapers wider at the tips and is about 12" long, with a curved portion going up to the pommel. Screws attach the cup to bosses on the cross guard. Grip is covered with woven thin copper wire with steel ferrules at the top and bottom. Pommel is a round pillow shape with the tang peened through at the top. Probably locally hilted, the blade may be much older. Wire wrapping is most likely a later addition, as most Colonial swords had plain wood or bone handles, but it is very well done and shows age. Condition is very good, the blade showing age graying, minor pitting, and a few light edge nicks, with a small bend near the tip. Cupped guard shows an old cleaned patina with some age graying, light rust, and small dings; inside of the cup is painted black. Cross guard and finger guard have been cleaned and show age graying and light red rust on the top edges. Grip has a nice dark patina to the copper wire with tight wrapping. Pommel shows age graying and light rust patina, with just a slight amount of movement on the tang. No scabbard. Est.: $800-$1,200.

Lot # 2 (Sale Order: 2 of 807)

WWII Era Russian Cossack Enlisted M1927 Shashka Cavalry Sword, dated 1942, with arsenal stamps on either side of the ricasso area, 31.25" wide fullered blade with pointed tip, brass handle fittings, grooved wood grips, wood scabbard covered with woven material and painted black. Brass scabbard fittings with arsenal proof marks and black painted steel drag. Overall length is 38.25". Lower handle brass fitting has arsenal mark and number. Condition is excellent, in about unissued condition. Blade is bright with no rust or signs of use, just a light coating of old dried grease. Brass handle fittings have a nice dark, un-cleaned patina. Wood grip has a couple of very small dings and a wonderful dark patina. Scabbard has a couple of small dings to the woven cloth covering and minor paint loss to the drag, but the overall appearance is close to mint. Brass scabbard fittings have a fine dark patina. The original leather blade washer is present and in excellent shape. A very nice example. Est.: $1,000-$1,500.

European Wheelock Short Rifle

Lot # 3 (Sale Order: 3 of 807)

European Wheelock Short Rifle, NSNV, approx. 50 cal., 28.5" octagon steel barrel polished in the white, brass drift adjustable front sight, fixed "V"-notched semi-buckhorn rear sight with folding second leaf, engraved lockplate, cock, cock spring, and shroud. Sliding pan cover, large trigger guard with finger grooves, double set adjustable triggers, hardwood stock with numerous wire, horn, ivory, and mother of pearl inlays, sliding patch box cover, and wood ramrod. Barrel was engraved near the breech at one time, but has been worn almost smooth. Barrel is retained by steel pins through the stock. Condition is good as partially restored, the metal surfaces cleaned carefully to retain as much of the engraving as possible. There is age graying and a lightly pitted and mottled surface texture to the steel parts. Lock features engraved scenes of floral decorations, a Roman type soldier with helmet, and various arms, cannon, and flags, with a similar theme engraved on the cock, and cock spring shroud. Muzzle on the barrel flares out near the end, and the rifling is a very deep type with six grooves. Metal parts show a lot of age, but some parts could be old replacements. Lock retaining screws show little age. Stock is most likely from a newer time period, but still probably around 150-200 years old; however, many of the horn inlays, ramrod base, and patch box cover inlays are modern replacements. Trigger guard shows age and hand-forging marks, but the finial at front tip is a replacement. Ivory and mother of pearl inlays on the left side of the stock look older. There are numerous dings, dents, scratches, chips, and small gouges to the wood stock, and large chips and losses to bottom of the stock around the ramrod slot area, pretty much the whole length of the slot. Action and triggers were not tested for function, but the cock moves up and down nicely. Est.: $2,500-$3,500. (Antique)

Antique Spanish to Eastern Mediterranean Miquelet Holster Pistol

Lot # 4 (Sale Order: 4 of 807)

Antique Spanish to Eastern Mediterranean Miquelet Holster Pistol, NVSN, .75 cal., 10.635" half-round/half-octagonal barrel without sights, marked with a large "R" at top flat and "FX" at breech; unmarked "Roman" style miquelet lock has the characteristic external mainspring-sear arrangement, the cock has a grooved battery (frizzen) face and elongated jaws with ring top-screw; brass furniture includes loop trigger guard with long finial tangs, bulbous oval buttcap with long side tangs, flat sideplate, spring-retained band, nosecap, and ferrule retaining the steel ramrod. Walnut fullstock has raised aprons at either side of lock, behind the barrel tang and ramrod channel. Mfg'd likely 18th Century. Condition is good to very good, the iron parts being generally smooth gunmetal gray-brown, brass is cleaned to bright. Stock shows much age, wear and use, with worming, a crack extending from front sideplate screw across to rear lock screw, another between band and nosecap, losses along both sides of juncture with barrel, and added varnish. Band and nosecap are period replacements, as may be the sideplate. Lock appears to be original miquelet with correct parts and apparently unbushed touchhole. Action functions well, smoothbore shows overall moderate black-powder erosion. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)

Antique English Screw-Barrel Percussion Boxlock Pistol, by Henry Nock, NVSN, .45 cal., 1.625" round barrel has engraving at muzzle, sunken Birmingham proof and removal-wrench lug at bottom; rounded brass boxlock frame is marked "H. Rare Antique Perhaps Composite U.S. Springfield Model 1855 Percussion Rifled Carbine

Lot # 22 (Sale Order: 22 of 807)

Rare Antique Perhaps Composite U.S. Springfield Model 1855 Percussion Rifled Carbine, NVSN, .58 cal., 22" rifled round barrel, small blade front and two-leaf rear sights, any markings at breech being obscured by pitting/dings; beveled lockplate marked "(spread-wing eagle/shield)" over "US" ahead of hammer, "Spring/Field/1851" vertically behind; iron mountings include trigger guard with long lower tang and distinctive large round sling-ring at rear of loop, straight buttplate, single spring-retained band, and unusual horseshoe-shaped swivel retaining the captive button-tip ramrod; brass L-shaped sideplate and nosecap. Stock is of oil-stained walnut and three-quarter length. Mfg'd ca. 1855-56, in qty. of only 1,020 guns. Condition is good, the steel surfaces having a deep brown patina with scattered dings and pitting, excepting the hammer, guard and lock, which are smooth gunmetal gray; lock edges and markings are sharp. Stock is sound showing vestigial left-side inspector's cartouche, has a 1.5" secure crack emanating from top-right of buttplate, cracks and small losses at rear of lockplate and front of sideplate, a 5.25" replaced section below the nosecap. Enigmatic is the "1851" lock date; it may have come from a M1842 musket or one of the M1847 musketoons, but fits perfectly and appears to have always been part of this gun. The .58 cal. rifled bore is correct, as a few were so altered from the standard .54 cal.; other features appear correct. Action is smooth, bore shows moderate rust erosion and good rifling. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique)
