Civil War Ballard Breechloading Single-Shot Rimfire Carbine, by Ball & Williams of Worcester, MA, #5463 (receiver), .44 RF cal., 22.25" half-round half-octagonal barrel with dovetailed blade front and two-leaf rear sights, marked "Ball & Williams" at top flat, "5642" at breech; one-piece receiver has central hammer and trigger, "rat-tail" operating lever (marked "27") that drops open breechblock (marked "642" at left) for loading and extraction, the latter by means of spring-actuated sliding bolt (marked "27") below; oil-finished walnut forearm retained by a single band with loop for carbine sling, matching buttstock with steel carbine buttplate. Mfg'd ca. 1862-65 in full-blued finish. Condition is fine retaining approx. 70% original barrel blue turning/mixing with age brown, balance of the metal smooth gunmetal gray. Stocks are sound and smooth showing minimal marks, and what appears to be a dowel repair at left wrist; nice grain, color and finish. Edges and markings are sharp, action is smooth, bore shows deep black-powder etching and fair rifling. All 6,600 Ballard carbines were made on military contract for the Civil War. Cased Antique Bacon Perc. Pocket Revolver, 2nd Model

Cased Antique Bacon Percussion Pocket Revolver, 2nd Model, #1152, .31 cal., 5" round barrel marked "Bacon Mfg. Co., Norwich, Conn." in one line, hinged loading lever below with unique ball latch; fluted 5-shot round cylinder marked "1152" at rear face; open-top frame has loose floral engraving to sides, central hammer, removable left sideplate, integral trigger guard and straps, two-piece varnished walnut grips. Mfg'd ca. 1858-67 in full blued finish. Condition is near fine retaining approx. 25% blue to barrel and straps, and all of a later deep blue blending them together. Grips are sound showing scattered light use marks and retain most original finish. Edges, markings, engraving and fitment are sharp; serial numbers match including wedge. Action is crisp, bore is bright with scattered light oxidation and fine rifling. This is an exceptional example of a rare pistol normally found in well-used condition. The antique mahogany box was re-purposed to a pistol case with purple velveteen partitioned in the English style; it is in very fine condition (no accoutrements are present). Est.: $1,000-$1,500. Antique Colt Richards Cartridge Alteration to the Model 1860 Army Revolver, #2014, .44 Colt CF cal., 8" round streamline barrel marked with the 1-line "U.S. America" address, right-side ejector rod fitted into former loading-lever slot; round 6-shot rebated cylinder has the rolled naval battle scene and "Colts Patent No. 014"; open-top frame (marked "Colts/Patent" at left) has central hammer, conversion breechplate (marked "731" both sides) with floating firing pin, integral rear sight, right-side hinged loading gate; two-piece gripstraps (iron backstrap, brass trigger guard marked "44 Cal." on left bolster), one-piece ivory grips. Mfg'd ca. 1871-78, likely in full nickel-plated finish, case hardened hammer, unfinished brass. Condition is very good retaining traces of barrel nickel, 80% bright nickel on frame and cylinder, lightly toned brass, backstrap gunmetal brow. Grips are sound and smooth showing light age cracks (there is a 1/16" strip of black material where top-front of grips join frame, possibly from shrinkage or perhaps not original to this gun, but fit well). Edges and markings are excellent, cylinder scene is particularly sharp. Visible serial numbers match; wedge unnumbered. Action is crisp, bore is clean showing overall light frosting and fine rifling. Civil War Colt Model 1851 Navy Single Action Percussion Revolver, 4th Model, #182794, .36 cal., 7.5" octagonal barrel marked with one-line "U.S. America" address and two British proofs at left lug; round 6-shot cylinder decorated with naval battle rolled scene, "Colts Patent No. 2794", has British proofs between chambers; open-top frame has central hammer and "Colts/Patent" at lower left, two-piece brass straps with one-piece varnished walnut grips. Mfg'd ca. 1863 with blued barrel, cylinder, trigger, case hardened frame, loading lever, hammer, and silver-plated gripstraps. Condition is fine retaining approx. 80% barrel blue, 40% thinning cylinder blue (shows erosion to one side but scene is 75% visible), lovely case colors (strong in places), 25% original silver. Very fine grips show minor wear and retain approx. 95% original varnish. All edges and markings are sharp, visible serial numbers match including wedge (lever unnumbered as is correct). F.A. Mfg. Co./Hartford, CT" below bolster, "1863" at rear; steel furniture includes 3 screw-clamp barrel bands (middle with sling loop), two-piece trigger guard with sling loop, curved buttplate marked "US" at top screw, nosecap, tulip-head ramrod; oil-stained walnut fullstock has raised aprons either side of lock, remnant military inspector's cartouche behind left lock screw. Mfg'd ca. 1864, with all metal surfaces left "in the white" but for rear sight, nipple, and some screws. Condition is excellent retaining lightly-toned bright metal, sharp edges and markings; buttplate is gunmetal gray-brown. Stock is sound and virtually unmarked but for slightly ragged ramrod channel, shows nice smooth finish and color. Action is strong and crisp; bore is brilliant with a small patch of frosting toward muzzle, sharp rifling. A superior example of a 157-year-old Civil War Colt rifle, normally found well-used. Springfield Model 1877 Trapdoor Saddle Ring Carbine, #147808, .45-70 Gov't. cal., 22" round barrel with pinned block-blade front sight and long-range sliding-leaf rear (marked "C" for Carbine), marked "V/P/(eagle head)/P" and "A" at breech; receiver has the early-style flush juncture with barrel and low-arch breechblock marked "U.S./Model/1884"; flat lockplate marked "(spread-wing eagle)/U.S./Springfield" below thumb-latch; steel fittings include two-piece loop trigger guard, curved carbine buttplate having a swivel door opening to butt trap and marked "US" at top screw, saddle ring and bar opposite lock, single spring-retained barrel band without swivel; one-piece oil-stained walnut halfstock with thicker wrist, 10.5" comb and left-side "ESA" inspector's cartouche. Mfg'd ca. 1877-78 with full-blued finish but for case hardened breechblock and tang. Condition is very good retaining approx. 75% military-style blue and traces of case colors, deep-blued hammer (perhaps refinished or replaced), light oxidation on trigger guard and band, gunmetal gray buttplate and sling ring/bar. Lock appears refinished. Front sight appears near new. Stock appears refinished and is smooth with small losses at band spring hole, right-front forearm, left buttplate below 2.25" line crack, with only faint outline of inspector's cartouche (likely sanded and re-oiled). The 1884-dated trapdoor and barrel band without stacking swivel may be replacements, but gun appears otherwise correct. Action is crisp; bore is bright showing light frosting and defined rifling. Mfg'd ca. 1873-77 in full-blued finish, case hardened breechblock and tang. Condition is very good retaining traces of original finishes, being mostly dark gunmetal gray with scattered spotting. Stock is sound showing shallow dings and gouges, a .375"x.75" loss ahead of trapdoor latch, another at top-right buttplate, no inspector's cartouche but nice grain and color. Muir & Co./Windsor Locks, CT." ahead of military hammer, "1863" behind; steel fittings include two-piece trigger guard with sling swivel, curved buttplate marked "US" at top screw, 3 spring-retained bands (middle with sling swivel), nosecap, steel ramrod with tulip tip; oil-stained walnut fullstock with military inspector's cartouche opposite the lock. Mfg'd ca. 1863 with metal "in the bright" but for blued rear sight. Condition is very good showing light age-toning to the barrel and much erosion in nipple area, the balance of the steel being lightly-pitted gunmetal gray (heavier on buttplate). Stock is sound with marks and dings of military use, roughness in ramrod channel, no inspector's cartouche, and later varnish. U.S. Model 1872 Cavalry Officer's Sword

Lot # 36 (Sale Order: 36 of 847)      

U.S. Model 1872 Cavalry Officer's Sword, 36" bright blade with single wide fuller, original leather blade washer, brass three-branch guard decorated with eagle, stars, and leaves. Pommel features shield, leaves, and floral designs. Grooved wood grip covered in shark skin and wrapped with a single twisted brass wire. Blade is not maker marked, and has stamped number "12" at ricasso, with a matching number on the scabbard near top. Scabbard is nickel plated with decorated brass hanger mounts and brass drag with floral designs. Etched engraved between the hangers is a monogram "HB", and floral flourishes. OAL is 43". Condition is very good, the blade showing light age graying, scattered light rust stains, but no pitting. Guard and pommel show light age and toning to brass. Grip is very nice, the sharkskin showing no losses and minor wear, wire wrapping intact and tight. Scabbard has scattered rust patina showing through the nickel plating, wear from use, scratches and scuffs, but no dings. Etched engraving is clear with a nice frosted interior. Est.: $500-$900.

U.S. Model 1913 Cavalry Sword Patton Saber, by Springfield Armory

Lot # 37 (Sale Order: 37 of 847)      

U.S. Model 1913 Cavalry Sword Patton Saber, by Springfield Armory, with 35" double-edged blade, having a single center blood groove, marked at ricasso "SA 1913/(flaming bomb)", and "U.S. 5772" on other side. Large steel cupped guard with raised checkered steel backstrap, and black checkered hard rubber grip plates. Scabbard is covered in tan-colored woven cotton material with steel fittings, and unit markings of "311 B 42" on the upper fitting. Condition is very good, the blade with some minor light fingerprint rust and peppering at the ricasso that should clean to excellent. Steel guard shows a dark patina and scattered light rust and age, handle backstrap showing a nice dark even patina. Grip plates are excellent with only a minor nick or two. Scabbard shows some staining and age overall, with more pronounced stains near the bottom. Scabbard fittings show a nice dark patina with scattered light rust speckles. Overall length is 43". A nice example. Est.: $600-$800.

Antique American Tip-Up Barrel Semi-Schuetzen Sporting Rifle, in the Style of the Maynard Rifle, but unmarked, NVSN, .38 (?) CF cal., 26" heavy round barrel lacks dovetailed sights, features auto-extraction; receiver hinged for tip-up barrel at front, has central hammer and standing breech with floating firing pin, serpentine under-lever opens breech and forms guard for trigger, tall adjustable folding-ladder tang sight; oil-stained walnut forearm retained by one screw, matching pistol-grip "fish-belly" buttstock has deeply-carved circular cheekpiece, engraved German-silver crescent buttplate. Mfg'd latter quarter of 19th century with blued barrel, lever and hammer, case hardened receiver. Single set trigger. Condition is fine retaining approx. 95% original dulling blue; receiver and breech show traces of case colors but are clean gunmetal gray. Stocks are sound, show hand workmanship and fitting, lovely grain and smooth finish, buttplate is lightly toned. Edges, markings and engraving are sharp, action is smooth, bore is brilliant with light frosting in grooves, sharp rifling. Perhaps a prototype or an inventor's one-off model. Est.: $1,500-$2,000. Marlin-Ballard Single Shot Target Rifle

Marlin-Ballard Single Shot Target Rifle, #29586, .40-65 cal., 26.5" medium-weight octagonal blue barrel, case hardened frame and lever, double set adjustable trigger, custom cheekpiece pistol-grip walnut stock, with Pachmayr Decelerator rubber butt pad. Rifle is fitted out with modern Axcel spirit lever globe front sight and long-range vernier rear sight. Dovetail scope blocks are also present. Condition is excellent as modified. Later-mfg'd barrel retains approx. 92% thinning blue; case hardened frame shows approx. 20%-30% thinning and greying hues, which still remain somewhat vivid. At least select to possibly 1X fancy stock shows excellent character and very little handling. Straight grain Schaubel forend fits slightly oversized but remains in excellent condition. Double set triggers work well, bore is mirror bright. Nice in obtainable Winchester .40-65 cal. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)

Mfg'd ca. 1884 with blued barrel, mag tube, receiver and buttplate, case hardened lever and hammer. Condition is fine retaining approx. 80% barrel blue, the balance being a dark blue-brown tone, all perhaps augmented with added finish; good case colors remain on hammer. Antique Winchester Model 1886 Large-Bore Lever Action Sporting Rifle, #31004, .45-70 CF cal., 26" round-to-octagonal barrel with open sights marked with maker's name, address and caliber on top flat; button magazine, frame with right-loading, top ejection, loop operating lever marked "Model 1886" on top tang, serial number on lower; oil-stained walnut forearm retained by a steel nosecap with sling stud, matching buttstock with sling stud and plain shotgun-style buttplate. Factory letter states shipped from warehouse on June 28, 1889, Order no. 23218. Mfg'd ca. 1889, with blued barrel, case hardened frame, nosecap, buttplate and hammer. Condition is very good as professionally refinished, retaining most black/blue and brightly figured case colors. Grips show minor logo wear and sharp checkering. Condition is very good retaining no original finishes but for traces of blue on ejector rod and traces of case colors to frame; markings are very good and all features conform to this serial number range. Carr) on rear face; solid frame has left-side cylinder axle release button, central hammer (blued with polished sides), characteristic large-loop trigger guard, integral straps with lanyard loop, twp-piece checkered hard rubber grips with the oval relief "Rampant Colt" logo at top. "U.S." appears on bottom-right frame, "R.A.C." at left-front trigger guard bow and left-rear frame "hump", "1902" at right-rear frame. Mfg'd ca. early 1900s in full blued finish. Condition is fine as configured retaining approx. 75% original Colt blue, sharp edges and markings, brilliant hammer and trigger blue. Accompanying tag reads "Reworked at U.S. Springfield Armory", which may account for the lack of barrel markings and appearance of cylinder, with their thinning blue finish; gun otherwise appears original.
