DUG CIVIL WAR ERA RELICS FROM CAMP COOPER, TEXAS

Dug relics from Camp Cooper included a set of shoulder scales and two Civil War Era infantry buttons. The buttons both have early pre - Civil War RMDC (raised mark depres...moresed chanel) backmarks. Camp Cooper was on the Clear Fork of the Brazos River. It was established by the Texas legislature in January 1856 and named for United States Army adjutant general Samuel Cooper. Its mission was to protect the frontier and to monitor the nearby Comanche Indian reservation. A number of officers who would become famous as Civil War Generals served at this fort. The post was founded by Col. Albert Sidney Johnston in January 1856 and became headquarters for four companies of the Second United States Cavalry under the command of Lt. Col. Robert E. Lee. Captains under his command included Earl Van Dorn and Theodore O'Hara. When Lee left the camp in 1857 for San Antonio, Maj. George H. Thomas assumed command. Troops from Camp Cooper participated in numerous campaigns and police actions against hostile Indians. In-house shipping is available. CIVIL WAR 1862 BOOK "ADJUTANT STEARNS" MEMORIAL

Civil War memorial book titled "Adjutant Stearns" Published by the Massachusetts Sabbath School Society in Boston in 1862. Adjutant Frazer Stearns was a member of the 21s...moret Massachusetts Infantry and was killed March 14, 1862 at New Berne, NC. Stearns was from Amherst and was 21 years old when he enlisted. He is buried in West Cemetery, Amherst, MA. This book was written by his father, William, and is a commentary on life of the era and beliefs using excerpts from Frazer's letters. Book is approximately 4" x 6" and in overall good condition with strong binding. The frontispiece is missing. Some pencil marks on fly page. The author, William Augustus Stearns (1805 in Bedford, Massachusetts, June 8, 1876) was a 19th-century American Reformed minister and teacher who served as president of Amherst College from 1854 to 1876. He graduated from Harvard College in 1827 and then Andover Seminary in 1831. Stearns served as pastor of Prospect Street Congregational Church from 1831 to 1854 when he left to become president of Amherst College. He served as president from 1854 until his death in 1876 and was one of the school's longest serving presidents. At the time of Frazar Stearns death, The 21st Massachusetts Infantry was part of the Coast Division under Ambrose Burnside and was engaged in the North Carolina Expedition. Recalled to Virginia in July 1862, the 21st was attached to the Army of the Potomac as part of the 9th Corps. They would go on to fight at 2nd Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam at Burnside's Bridge, Fredericksburg, Knoxville, Tennessee, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Bethesda Church, Petersburg, Weldon Railroad, and Poplar Springs Church. They are listed in Fox's 300 Fighting Regiments suffering 161 officers and enlisted men killed during the war. In-house shipping is available. Dodge was originally fr...moreom New Boston, New Hampshire. "The CDV was taken in Boston, Massachusetts before he went west. It is identified in ink, "Levi Woodbury Dodge son of Samuel & Monice Dodge 1829 - 1866". The February 10, 1866 edition of The San Francisco Examiner reports, The Trinity Journal of February 3d records the following fatal accidents: Levi W. Dodge was almost instantly killed in his mining claim at Cox's Bar, Trinity River, on the 1st Instant. The claim is worked with a hydraulic, and Dodge had laid down the pipe to remove some rocks, when a piece of earth from the bank above struck him, but not in sufficient quantity to cover him. He was immediately released by his companions and raised to his feet, but it was evident that he had sustained a mortal injury, for, sinking back in the arms of his fellows, he dictated a farewell to relatives and friends and died..... St. Paul, Minnesota. This 556 page history covers the history of both the 1st and 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters and contains numerous photographs, vignettes, regimental statistics and an officers roster. Casualty lists for the 1st U.S.S.S. are also included. The book has two signatures at the front, P.E. Biggins, Sharpsville, Pa. and James Biggins, Eldred, Pa. Neither of these individuals was a member of either regiment. The book is divided into sections on the nine Army of the Potomac campaigns in which these regiments took part. The appendix includes biographical sketches and a section on the Gettysburg Ceremonies and Monuments. Overall very good condition book. The binding is still intact with some partial separation at the covers. Wear as seen in the photographs. Two cartridge boxes including an M1864 .58 caliber Civil War cartridge box and a Type 6 .45-70 McKeever cartridge box. The McKeever box is complete and intact. The leathe...morer is supple but shows some wear. The M 1864 cartridge box is complete but in fair condition. This box still retains its two original cartridge tins. The back of the box is separated from the front and side sections. The closure flap is complete but torn. Flaking and crazing present particularly on the inside flaps. Remnants of the cartridge box sling are still attached. The maker's markings are worn off. Included is an envelope with no letter that was found between the outer and inner flap of this cartridge box. It's addressed to Mr. Willis Sunderland of Cleveland, Ohio and has a 1 cent Columbian Exposition stamp. In-house shipping is available. The silver number 3 is separately applied to the shield. The plate exhibits a beautiful untouched patina and measures 4.5" x 3.75". In-house shipping is available. United States Pattern 1872 Shako for the Massachusetts National Guard FIRST CORPS OF CADETS. This organization was the commonwealth of Massachusetts' oldest militia unit ...morehaving been founded in 1741. The shako is complete. The visor is loose but still partially attached. The manufacturer's paper label is affixed to the interior crown; " Bent & Bush, Manufacturers and Dealers Military Goods 387 Washington Street, Boston". The Bent & Bush Company was located at 387 Washington Street from 1877 to 1902. The FIRST CORPS OF CADETS brass plate is affixed to the front and features the unit's motto, "Monstrat Viam" - "It points the Way". The wool body is in excellent condition. The chinstrap is attached by Massachusetts state seal buttons. In-house shipping is available.
