During WWI this field was used for balloon and airship training. From 1922 until 1931 the 11th School Group at Brooks Field served as the Primary Training School for the U.S. Army Air Service and U.S. Army Air Corps. Large autographed photo of Major General Johnson Hagood. This image was signed when Hagood was the Commander of the 7th Corps Area. The autograph reads, "To the Woodworth...mores. Souvenir of Happy Days at Fort Omaha, Johnson Hagood Christmas 1929". The photograph measures 10.75" x 13.75". Major General Hagood was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina in 1873. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1891 and The United States Military Academy (West Point) in 1896 and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the Artillery. Prior to World War One, he commanded Fort Flagler, Washington (Coastal Artillery), served in the Philippines, and held other commands in the Coastal Defense. During WWI he served as the Commander of the 7th Regiment, 1st Expeditionary Brigade, Coast Artillery Corps. He arrived in France Sept. 11, 1917 and fought near Soissons, September to October. He ended the war as Chief of Staff of the Service of Supply (S.O.S.). In-house shipping is available. 1937 LAKEHURST N. J. PENNANT HINDENBURG DISASTER

Excellent condition "1937 Lakehurst" green felt pennant featuring a zeppelin - dirigible in the center. The pennant measures 23.5" long (28.5" with the felt "tails" and 8...more.5" tall. There are no holes or rips in this pennant and no crazing of the painted letters, numbers, or dirigible. There are a few spots on the back that appear to be glue residue but there is no damage. The Naval Air Station Lakehurst in Manchester Township, New Jersey was the site of the May 6, 1937 Hindenburg Disaster in which the commercial airship LZ 129 Hindenburg airship burst into flames and crashed, killing 35 of the 97 passengers on board and one ground crew. Many of the survivors suffered severe burns. Naval Air Station (NAS) Lakehurst was the center of airship development in the United States and housed three of the U.S. Navy's four rigid airships, (ZR-1) Shenandoah, (ZR-3) Los Angeles, and (ZRS-4) Akron. The use of airships for commercial transportation ended almost immediately after this crash. In-house shipping is available. U.S.S. AKRON AIRSHIP BLUEPRINTS, PHOTOS & FABRIC

Vintage United States Navy U.S.S. Akron airship group consisting of a dirigible blueprint, 18 photographs and fabric remnant from the Akron. The blueprint measures 76" x ...more18.25" and is in very good condition with folds and small holes along the edges most likely caused when this was pinned on a wall. The 18 photographs including views of the Akron in flight, on the ground, and construction of the special hanger at the Goodyear Airdock in Akron, Ohio. 4 of the photographs measure 9.875" x 7.625", 13 photos measures 5.75" x 3.5", and one photo measures 4.5" x 2.75". One other photograph of a lake scene in Florida is included because it was found with the U.S.S.Akron photos but it's relation to the photos, if any, is not known. One of the photos of the hanger being constructed bears an historically significant caption on the reverse that reads, "Zepp Hanger Akron, Ohio, Sept., 1929". This image was taken just prior to the start of construction on October 31, 1929 at the Goodyear Airdock in Akron, Ohio by the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation. The fabric remnant measures approximately 6" x 6.5" and is comprised of thin woven cloth with a heavy, silver metallic paint coating over both sides. The fabric is folded and with creases. The airship's maiden flight took place around Cleveland, Ohio on September 23, 1931. On October 27, 1931, the Akron was commissioned a U.S. Navy ship at the Lakehurst Naval AIr Station, Manchester Township, New Jersey. Akron was destroyed in a thunderstorm off the coast of New Jersey on the morning of .April 4,1933, killing 73 of the 76 crewmen and passengers. The accident involved the greatest loss of life in any airship crash. . In-house shipping is available.
