Overview of 17th Century German Wheelock Sporting Carbine

Item Details

"About .38 caliber. 17.75"" barrel length. SN: NSN. Metalwork left in the white. Stock is walnut with an ivory nosecap and mounting screw spacers, as well as a dovetailed brass front sight and two position folding rear sight. Single shot wheelock firearm with a rifled barrel and a patchbox to the stock. The buttplate and the rear edge of the patchbox cover are capped with horn and embellished with three line border scrollwork. The cheek piece features a mother of pearl oval set inside of a lightly embellished recess. The forend cap is engraved on both sides with a floral scroll within a double border. The lockplate screws are set into ivory washers resembling a Maltese Cross pattern. The rifle features double set triggers, and an iron triggerguard with three finger rests. The ramrod is entirely wood and likely a replacement. It is retained by single brass band and a socket cut into the forend. The octagonal barrel features geometric scroll at the muzzle and breech, and is marked from the left flat to the right I/A 72/W. The cock is engraved with an eagle's head motif. A brass inventory tag reading 174 is affixed to the triggerguard by brass wire. The rifle comes with a piece of pyrate clutched in the jaws of the cock.  Good. The bore is Dark with oxidation throughout. The metalwork shows streaked oxidation forming suggesting it was varnished to maintain the finish at some point. Mottled oxidation and brown patina covers the left barrel from muzzle to breech, with further streaks of patina overall. The horn cap for the patchbox cover has split and has lost half of the plate. The wood shows handling wear, dings and mars scattered overall. Forend is split for five inches from the muzzle through the ramrod cut. Further cracks to the upper edges of the stock with signs of old splitting that has since removed material. Ramrod hole has cracks forming around its radius. The forward stock pin is missing, and the rear pin has split and fails to fully secure the barrel. The cock moves and so does the coverplate. The triggers are functional. EST: $2000 - 3000 NOTES REGARDING FIREARMS*Requires Federal Firearms License (FFL). If you are not a license holder, we can ship to a license holder of your choosing for transfer.
