Item Details

This Winchester Model 1885 High-Wall rifle was made in 1918 and was then customized by C.C. Johnson in 1939... The Winchester Model 1885 is a single-shot target rifle with a falling-block action, designed by John Browning and produced by Winchester from 1885-1919. In 1885 competitive target shooting was very popular in America. Huge matches were held at places like Creedmore, New York. Spectators would number in the thousands. The 1885 was uniquely suited to the long range accuracy shooting of the day. The 1885 Single Shot was the first and perhaps one of the greatest of all the John Moses Browning designs. It was conceived of and created by Browning, at the age of 23, in the frontier pioneer town of Ogden, Utah in 1878. It was also the gun that started his relationship with the Winchester Repeating Arms company. Two popular models were made, the so-called Low Wall which showed an exposed hammer, firing less powerful cartridges, and the so-called High Wall for stronger cartridges whose steel frame covered most of the firing hammer when viewed from the side. C.C. Johnson was a world renowned gunsmith in the 1930s - 1950s that specialized in Custom Professional Target Rifles. C.C. Johnson started rifle smithing in 1933 in Thackery, Ohio. His custom rifles will sport his name stamp in 2 lines: "C.C. Johnson/ Thackery O.", from 1933-1947. Any C.C. Johnson rifle with his stamp on it will have a 5-digit number stamped on the barrel under the for-end stock. The first two digits are the last two digits of the calendar year in which the work was done. This 1918 Winchester M1885 was customized by C.C. Johnson in 1939 (under barrel stamped - "39126") and features a 28" heavy octagon barrel chambered for the R2 22-3000 Lovell caliber. Introduced by Hervey Lovell, the R2 22-3000 was formed from .25-20 Single Shot cartridges, by reducing the neck to .22”. The .22-3000 is capable of propelling a .22” dia. 45-grain bullet at 2,616 fps. with 684 ft.-lbs. of energy. This gun also features a smooth walnut stock with fluted high-comb and beavertail forearm, case hardened receiver, long curved lever that fits flush with the grip, brown rubber Hawkins recoil pad with black spacer, rear dovetail with insert, scope mounts, crowned muzzle and 14" LOP. This gun is missing the original grip knob, but is in nice condition for its age, with very light wear, has an excellent sharp/ clean bore and is in perfect working order. Jerry McKamy Estate
