The wisconsin sesquicentennial committee & the fennimore doll & toy museum presents the "catherine amy dewey doll" - the first lady of the state of wisconsin 1848-1998! To celebrate wisconsin's 150 year sesquicentiennial celebration a limited edition hand made consigned doll was made, and they choose the beautiful, elegant and inspiration catherine amy dewey. The first lady of teh new state of wisconsin was catherine amy dewey. She was the wife of governor nelson dewey and mother of his 3 children. Daughter of a judge, cahterine had advantages not available to most young women in the early frontier days - private tutors, lovely clothing and nice carriages. Together the dewey's built a mansion, stonefield, north of cassville, set on a two thousand acrew estate along the mississippi rivier - a show place for it's time. Many were employed on the estate workingin it's vineyards, orchards and fields. Eventually however catherin longed for the glamour of high society and left the quiet rural life. For over ten years she traveled to madison, washington d. C and abroad. Catherine amy dewey died in washington d.C. In 1989 at the age of seventy. The fennimore doll & toy museum had this doll created in the likeness of catherine amy dewey for the wisconsin 1848-1998 sesquicentennial celebration by artist donna ackerman, owner of donnas dolls in lancaster mi. All the dolls were limtied edition (this one is #39/750), made of fully jointed body and limbs thus fully poseable and hand painted. She is 21 " tall with auburn hair, brown glass paper weight eyes, eyelashes, a satin like hunter green dress with ecru accents and matching bonnet, and includes a doll stand. The costume is a historically correct design from 1848 following as closely as the availablity of fabric and trimmings allowed. The doll was sold for $300, however they sold out quickly with the price substantially appreciating and this catherine amy dewey was purchased for over $500 at a local charity fundraiser over a decade ago. The new owner, in awe with the mint condition and exquisitie beauty and detail, quickly consigned a hand made glass and wood custom fitted case for her and added the brass name plaque below. The back of the case features a full length removable mirror panel (it slides up and out) to allow for posing and adjustments. This catherine amy dewey doll, #39/750 of the total limited edition sold out dolls, and has been preserved impeccably in her own customized glass display case. She comes also with her original hang tag and the now vintage purchase brochure. (value $1000+)
