(A) Rare & Unusual Circa 1840 French Robert's System Breech-loading 20 Bore Shotgun.

Lot # 600 (Sale Order: 1 of 531)

This is one of the more unusual designs to come out of the 1830-40's era when many gun makers were experimenting with breech loading weapons as well as self contained cartridges. The proprietary cartridge was self-contained in a paper/cardboard type tube. At the rear of the cartridge protruded a small percussion tube that operated similar to a pinfire cartridge. The action operates by lifting up on the upper tang to unlock and swing the breech open, exposing the rear of the barrel/chambers to load the cartridge. Then by closing/lowering the upper tang, it cocks the internal hammers, which then can strike the noted percussion firing tube on the rear of the cartridge. The significance of this shotgun and cartridge is that in 1831 Abraham Moser was granted an English patent (6196) on using this cartridge with a centerfire cap base and later J.A. Roberts was granted a French patent (8061) in which he combined the two and developed the rimfire cartridge. This gun is marked in gold on the top of the barrel "FUSIL ROBERT Bte A PARIS". Marked on the rear of the action "ACADie L'INieFRANCAISE/ MEDAILE/ D OR/ 1833". Fine scroll engraving on the action and trigger guard. Engraved on the inside of the action lever on the left side "C24 No 95". Damascus barrels retain most of the original pattern with 85% applied brown finish. Slight dings and dents in both barrels. Bores are dirty but fine, action is in good mechanical function. Birdseye stock is very good with dings and handling marks. There is a crack that appears to have been pinned a very long time ago on either side going from the rear of the trigger guard to the middle of the action. Beautiful relief carved finial of forend. Checkering is very good with well defined edges. Barrel Length: 29 - 5/8"FFL Status: AntiqueGauge: 20Manufacturer: FrenchModel: RobertPaperwork: NoSerial Number: NSN

(C)Rare Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Single Shot 20 Gauge Shotgun (1919).

Lot # 620 (Sale Order: 20 of 531)

Full choke marked barrel with two line Winchester barrel address and "NICKEL STEEL FOR SMOKELESS AMMUNITION" marking on left side of barrel. The 1885 was designed by America's foremost firearms designer John Moses Browning. More variations of the Model 1885 were produced than any other model produced by Winchester. With this being said the 20 gauge shotgun was one of the rarest variations and are rarely encountered; most are later production guns made with blue steel finish and walnut two piece stocks with hard rubber buttplates. Most examples are found in the 110,000 to 115,000 serial range and this example falls right into the middle. Barrel retains most all finish with slight loss at muzzle and thinning at address area. Receiver is blue with over 75% finish remaining with common flaking of finish that occurred during this time frame. Two piece walnut stocks are very good with most all varnish remaining. Typical period storage dings and bruising exist but is very limited to bottom of forearm. Buttstock has a crack emitting from tang towards butt and another crack on right side of wrist (this could be repaired). Overall a better than average condition example of a very rare variation of the 1885 Single Shot.Barrel Length: 26"Choke: FullFFL Status: Curio & RelicGauge: 20Manufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1885 High WallPaperwork: YesSerial Number: 113730

U.S.A." on right side of breech flats. Second set of barrels, most likely from a 4E, have star engraving. Barrel flats are engine turned. Serial number on lumps; original barrels with "6T". Ithaca boxlock action is engraved in grade "6" style with full coverage large shaded figs and fig leaf acanthus within geometric borders.
