Outstanding Luxury Presentation of Bisque Doll with Trousseau and Accessories 1200/1700

7 1/2" (19 cm.) doll. 9" x 9" box. A wooden cased presentation box is lavishly fitted with an ivory silk cover, including tufted cushion on the lid which is encircled by ...morean ormolu frame, and with original ormolu escutcheon and brass key. The interior is fitted with a bisque shoulderhead doll with blue glass eyes, blonde mohair wig, closed mouth, muslin body, bisque lower arms, along with an assortment of costumes comprising burgundy satin dress, pinafore, various undergarments, straw bonnet, shoes, and with accessories including her own all-bisque miniature doll, two ormolu-framed lithographs, comb, mirror, tiny bisque doll, and a wonderful boutonniere fitted with a tiny winged doll. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 123-5/0 (doll). Comments: the doll by Kling in presentation for the French market, circa 1885. Value Points: outstanding presentation with all-original costumes and rare accessories and novelties is perfectly preserved.

French Miniature Folding Room with Original Furnishings and Accessories 2800/4200

The five-sided folding room is designed with side-angled window walls, and has original wall papers and gold paper edging, original valance...mores with patterned silk draperies that match the original burgundy silk upholstery with interwoven floral designs. There is a gilt framed wall mirror, three ormolu framed portraits, and a superb ensemble of mahogany-finished salon furnishings with gilt paper edging, comprising a day bed with high canopy, piano and piano stool, mirrored armoire, fireplace mantel, fernery with original ferns and flowers, scalloped-edge pedestal table, four chairs and an ormolu umbrella stand. Included is a woven carpet. Excellent condition. For the French market, circa 1880, the room was originally presented with these furnishings, draperies and wall coverings, and remains perfectly-preserved.

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 111 5. Comments: Simon and Halbig, circa 1912; it has been conjectured this is the missing 111 model registered by Kammer and Reinhardt in 1910. As with the 112 and 114 models, both made for K*R by S&H, it was likely created in both painted eye and this sleep-eyed version. Value Points: the extremely rare model has a compelling wistful, yet intelligent, expression enhanced by finest bisque, original body and body finish, and wonderful costume.

Luxurious and Rare French "Surprise" Cornet with Double-Sided Bisque Head 1700/2500

13" (33 cm.) The silk-covered cornet with wonderful hand-painted scene has elaborately-carved bone handle and a silk ruffled cap which conceals a double-faced bisque head...more hidden inside the cornet. When the handle is moved up and down, the head pops up and down; one side depicts a handsome young lad with blue glass eyes and closed mouth, and the other side depicts the same lad with a crying expression and blue glass eyes. There is a ruffled collar at the neck and a silk bodice which attaches to the interior of the cone. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1880. Value Points: very rare and delightful surprise whose luxury details include hand-painted scene on cornet, bone carved handle and rare double-faced head with original cap and costume.

When wound, the girl turns her head side to side and moves her hands up and down "playing" the piano, while music plays. Condition: generally excellent, music and movement function well. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 3 (and artist checkmarks). Comments: Vichy, circa 1890. Value Points: well-preserved parlor automaton in beautifully-preserved well-functioning condition, and with rare hidden luxury detail: the top hinges open for access to the hollow interior designed as candy container presentation.

Condition: generally excellent, arms are old replacements (original arms are included). Comments: Germany, circa 1865. Value Points: lovely complexion and rare brown eyes; attached to the doll is an old handwritten note reading "Harriet Beecher Stowe's doll given by her to her niece who gave it to Adelaide Agnes Kaiser" and then describing the fragments of original costumes which are also included here. Other notes with the doll indicate subsequent owners including Eleanor Greene who was an early member of the "Nellie W. Perkins Doll & Miniature Society of N.H." and Betty Thatcher of New Hampshire who in 2000 wrote about the doll with the poignant note "Sometimes I wish the dolls themselves could talk". The doll has a blue ribbon award from Doll Collectors of America in 1987.

Condition: generally excellent, finish on hands is worn. Marks: Mina (incised on front shoulderplate) 1903 L.M. (back shoulderplate). Comments: Leo Moss, early 1900s, "Mina" was the first Leo Moss doll to be exhibited nationally, winning a blue ribbon award at the UFDC convention in 1973. Value Points: extraordinary artistry of the folk doll with superb details of sculpting and painting, highlighted by sculpted tears. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Leo Moss, circa 1920s, the doll was known by the Moss family as "Bobo", although the background of that reference remains a mystery. From the Myla Perkins collection, featured in museum exhibitions and in her book, Black Dolls (Collector Books, 1993), page 15, where the doll was described by the author as "the most comical and interesting of the Moss dolls...[with his] teasing, infectious smile".

Very Rare American Paper Mache Portrait "Elaine" by Leo Moss with Provenance 5500/7500

Paper mache shoulderhead depicting a solemn-faced child, heavily-lidded brown glass eyes, mohair lashes, outlined eyes, one-stroke brows, accented nostrils, ...moreclosed mouth with prim lips, brunette hand-tied human hair wig over solid dome, kid gusset-jointed body, bisque forearms. Condition: very good/excellent, one thumb tip chipped, all-original as made. Marks: L.M. Comments: Leo Moss, this is one of three dolls made for the daughters of a Macon family for whom Leo Moss performed odd jobs. Learning of Moss's talent in doll making, the father commissioned Moss to create likeness dolls of his three daughters, Elaine, Mary, and Lilly, ages 9, 6, and 5 in 1909. And according to an original letter written by the middle daughter, Mary [Kane} in 1972, "Each of our dolls were of our own likeness...The wigs were made from our own hair. Mrs. Moss made the wigs and dressed them in clothes of exact copy she had made us girls for Christmas". The letter goes on to describe more details of Leo Moss dolls and the manner in which he worked to capture the likeness of each child. Value Points: very rare doll by Leo Moss, enhanced by its original wig and hair, and with documentation letter which is included with the doll.
