This is a First Model made from 1893 to 1905. Has a 5/8" threaded barrel end for indoor shooting parlor silencer. The Paine front sight sits at outer edge of rib. Canadian proof marks on frame and barrel. It is a single shot top break made on revolver frame with intact recoil shield and Smith & Wesson black hard rubber extension grips, factory high polish blue finish and case colored hammer and trigger guard. This pistol remains in beautiful condition retaining approximately 80% of the brilliant Smith & Wesson factory blue with the balance simply flaked. Generous case colors on hammer and trigger guard. Excellent grips. It is a single shot pistol made on revolver-type frame with recoil shield left intact, rare factory nickel finish, blued trigger guard and black hard rubber Smith & Wesson extension grips. Has a Paine style front sight with round barrel, full rib, and rear target sight. Manufactured 1893 to 1905. Pistol retains approximately 85% original factory nickel with some age freckling under rib and a couple other minor age spots. Blue-grey patina on trigger guard. Grips are excellent with no chips. On page 219 of the book Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson 3rd Edition it states; That these revolvers were made for the United States Air Force between 1962 - 1963 with most of them being destroyed by the Government in Brunswick, Georgia but has never been confirmed. This one has the supporting documentation of a factory Smith and Wesson letter that states it is one of that contract. It has all the special features that it is supposed to have to include "U.S." stamped on the back strap. Special rear sight that extends past the frame and extended to the base of the front sight. Magna walnut grips with S&W medallions. Heavy two inch barrel. This one was shipped from the factory February 8 1963. It features single action, factory nickle finish, large top strap screw, barrel address in English says "Russian", with a sash hook trigger guard, blued extractor, latch and trigger, non-checkered two piece walnut grips. Butt is stamped "1974" in a box and letter "P". Case colored guard has turned patina. Overall the revolver retains 85% of the original factory nickle; barrel retains 85-90% nickle, turning patina at muzzle with some light bubbling; 50% nickle on cylinder; and 85-90% nickle on frame. Approximately 310 revolvers were manufactured in nickel finish with a 7" barrel and detachable buttstock. A broad arrow proof mark is stamped on the butt next to serial number. There is an oval mounting hole on back of backstrap, and the rear grip strap extends beyond the grips. The stock is made of walnut with a Smith & Wesson logo black composite buttplate and has nickel attaching system. The hardware and wooden buttstock are stamped with Serial No. 768 and there is no broad arrow, which tells us that this stock is an original Smith & Wesson stock, but not made for this gun. Walnut stock is in excellent to near mint condition with virtually all of the nickel intact on hardware, albeit some frosting. Matching serial numbers on cylinder and latch. Features full nickel finish with fire blue barrel catch, case colored trigger guard, two piece walnut grips, pinned half moon front sight. Walnut grips have a 0 in pencil on both panels. Barrel retains approximately 20% original nickel with the balance blended smooth grey. Cylinder retains approximately 85% original nickel. Left side of frame retains approximately 30% nickel and approximately 50% nickel on right side. 80% nickel on straps. All metal surface that does not retain nickel blends perfectly with a smooth, grey patina. Indexes and locks up fine with a strong, clean bore with light frosting. Grips are excellent and not numbered. Case colored hammer and trigger guard with strong colors. Serial number is stamped two places on butt. Revolver has lanyard ring. Retains about 75% period nickel finish, balance soft patina. Cylinder shows no signs of burn. Inside grip frame has refinishing date stamped inside "4-28". This is a six shot, single action, tip-up with high target front sight and target rear sight. The star by the serial number indicates it was returned to the factory for reworking or refinishing, and it has the refinishing date stamped on inside of grip frame of "6-21". This is a six shot, single action Target Model with a factory adjustable rear sight. Trigger guard has traces of color and hammer exhibits brilliant case colors. Sharp barrel legends. Frame retains 95% of factory applied blue. Barrel has 75% factory applied blue thinning at muzzle and sides. Cylinder has traces of blue but is basically a blue-brown soft patina. Only 15,340 examples of this revolver were made by Smith from 1886-1898. This example is factory blued with case colored hammer and trigger and chambered for the 44-40 (44 WCF) cartridge and sports a 6-1/2” barrel with Smith Gutta Percha grips and standard sights. All numbers are matching to include the cylinder, latch, barrel and scratched into the left grip panel. It has a mid-production four digit serial number “7660”. This revolver remains in superb condition and does not appear to have seen much use. Overall, the gun retains approximately 75-80% bright original factory blue with no blemishes or flaws, the balance appears to have simply flaked or faded to a mix of plum patina with razor sharp edges. The lock up and bore are like new and tight as a drum. Grips are also near mint showing virtually no wear. Bright case colors on both hammer and trigger.
