Peter Biegel (1913-1988) 'ARKLE' AT KEMPTON PARK signed, inscribed with title Kempton Race Course - Stable and dated 27-12-66, pencil and watercolour and bodycolour on gr...moreey paper, 30.5 by 35.5cm., framed These scenes by Biegel depict Arkle's final racecourse appearance. Arkle raced in the 1966 King George VI Chase at Kempton Park but struck the guard rail with a hoof when jumping an open ditch, which resulted in a fractured pedal bone. Despite this injury, he completed the race and finished second. But despite four months in plaster and a return to training, the decision was made to retire the great champion. The painting was completed by Diana Douglas-Hamilton. The work is a portrait of the Duchess with her 1985 Grand National winner Last Suspect and another fine steeplechaser Ballyross, whose notbale wins were in the 1978 Powers Gold Cup and the 1982 Grand Military Gold Cup, aged 14.
