ATTENTION COLLECTORS OF HISTORICAL AMERICANA: Early full stock cap-rifle, .36 .cal., single set tri Lot #467 (Sale Order 170 of 339) ATTENTION COLLECTORS OF HISTORICAL AMERICANA: Early full stock cap-rifle, .36 .cal., single set trigger, 53" long, w/ 38" octagon barrel. With letter of documentation from John G. Montague, that reads as follows: "This is to certify that John G. Montague purchased a cap-lock rifle with full stock that had been the original property of Devil Anderson Hatfield (also known as Anse Hatfield) & is alleged to have been the very gun that Anse Hatfield shot & killed the McCoy boy, which began the infamous fued between the Hatfields & McCoys." The letter goes on to say, "I purchased this gun from Bill Cotham of Little Rock Arkansas. Mr. Cotham had been a friend & fellow collector for almost 50 years, his credibility in my mind is beyond reproach. The rifle bears a museum tag on the toe of the butt stock, indicating it has been in a museum & was property of Anse Hatfield. The rifle had been on display in a private museum in Kentucky for many years, as the alleged killing occurred in 1880, near the Tennessee & Kentucky state lines. Both the Hatfield & McCoy families had many altercations involving the use of many firearms, most of which were Winchester Repeating rifles, but this is the gun that started the fracas by Anse Hatfield killing the McCoy boy because the McCoy boy was ???Anse Hatfield's daughter. This gun is a true piece of historical Americana." Letter signed & dated, "John G. Montague, Attorney, Memphis, Tennessee".
