Major metal components exhibit a lustrous reapplied blued finish, with some small parts being nitre blued. Frame is mounted with 2 piece checkered black hard rubber grips. Matching assembly number "433" is stamped on the left side of the frame beneath the grip, and is faintly legible on the underside of the barrel. CONDITION: excellent as professionally refinished, with metal components retaining the vast majority of their reapplied blue finish, exhibiting a few scattered small spots of mild wear and thinning overall. DIRK, & BOWIE SCABBARD. 1) Spear point knife produced by Slater Brothers in Sheffield, England. The ricasso is marked "VENTJR/ SLATER/ BROTHERS/ SHEFFIELD". The bright finished spear point blade measures 5 7/8" in length, with the knife measuring 10" in overall length. German silver crossguard with 2 piece bone handles, each retained via a single rivet at the top and bottom of the panels. One grip features a thin rectangular escutcheon. Brown leather sheath exhibits a crosshatched pattern overall with light gold colored embellishments, as well as German silver fittings. CONDITION: blade retains a bright exterior, exhibiting some scattered spots of mild oxidation and dark discoloration. Grip panels a light mellow patina, with some minor losses along the edges. Sheath exhibits areas of mild age related crazing, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. 2) Small dirk produced by George Wostenholm. The ricasso is marked "GEO.WOSTENHOLM", with "I.XL" on the reverse. The double edged blade measures 4 1/8" in length, with the dirk having an overall length of 7 7/8". German silver crossguard with rounded ends and 1 piece ivory grip. German silver sheath with belt loop and ball pattern drag. CONDITION: blade exhibits a gray patina, with scattered spots of light surface pitting and darker discoloration. German silver crossguard and sheath exhibit some tarnishing, but otherwise are good overall. Grip exhibits a crack that runs from the base to the crossguard, and also exhibits losses primarily around the ferrule. 3) Leather sheath for a Sheffield pattern bowie knife. Leather exhibits some gold colored embellishments and German silver fittings. CONDITION: sheath exhibits wear, crazing, and losses overall with an area of separation present on the forward spine. CONDITION: blade has a dark patina with some pitting and numerous nicks to the edge. The hilt has a gray patina, and the grip is quite solid, though missing a few small splinters. This foot officer’s sword measures 37 1/4" overall with a blade length of 31 3/8”. The blade has a single medium fuller and is etched over 15” of the blade with various foliate & patriotic motifs, including a spray of arms & American eagle. Gilded brass hilt with a classical style guard featuring a central American eagle and a highly embellished knuckle bow. Small eagle pommel with grape leaf decorated ferrule & wire-wrapped grip. Gilded brass scabbard with foliate embellishments. Scabbard is engraved between the mounts “Capt. William J. Clark March 5 1847”. This sword is absolutely original; however, we do not guarantee the engraved personalization to be period. CONDITION: blade has a medium to dark patina with relatively clear etching. Etching includes foliate motifs & sprays of arms. Gilded brass hilt with a Medusa head languet on the front. Plain guard with downturned, lightly embellished, cylindrical fuller. Highly embellished reverse P knuckle bow leads to a well-articulated eagle head pommel atop a plain backstrap. Grip is intricately carved bone. Gilded brass scabbard with foliate embellishments. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina with 80% of the blued field remaining, and 20% of the gold highlights. Hilt retains approx. 35% of its original gilded finish. Plain knuckle bow enters the lower jaw of the dog head pommel. Wire-wrapped sharkskin grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray, cleaned patina with areas of cleaned pitting. Overall length: 39 1/8”. Blade length: 33 1/2". Plain quillback blade engraved near the hilt “N.P. Ames Cutler Springfield 1837”. Brass hilt with a sharply downturned quillon stamped “WS”. 2-Branch guard joins the knuckle bow past the mid-point and enters the lower section of the stepped pommel. The guard has a thin slot toward the pommel, presumably for a knot. Wood grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a very dark overall patina. Hilt is quite solid. The spanner nut at the top of the pommel is missing. Grip has no remaining leather with some losses to the wooden core near the pommel. (02-20144/BF). $400-600.

1) M1840. This is an imported M1840 style cavalry saber measuring 43” overall with a 36” blade. Plain blade with a single wide fuller and secondary fuller near the spine. The ricasso is stamped “2.61”. Solid brass hilt with 2-branch guard. Wire-wrapped brown leather grip. Iron scabbard. This sword has an oral family history of belonging to Private John F.H. Hooper Co. H, 29th Pennsylvania Infantry. We feel this attribution is, at best, suspect primarily because it is a cavalry saber. CONDITION: blade shows light wear with a gray patina. Hilt is solid. Grip appears to be replaced, and the scabbard has been painted black. 2) M1860. This is a reproduction of a US M1860 cavalry saber measuring 42” overall with a 34 1/4" blade. Blade has a single wide fuller with a secondary fuller. Ricasso is marked “AMES MFG CO CHICOPEE MASS” on one side, and “U.S / ADK / 1862”. Brass hilt. Wire-wrapped leather grip. Iron scabbard. SILVERED PRESENTATION POWDER FLASK WITH

CONFEDERATE ASSOCIATION. This powder flask measures 8” in height and has a silver-plated body & charger. The body is engraved “Presented TO Dr. A. L. McKay BY W.I.B”. The charger is marked “G & J.W HAWKSLEY”. Records show that Alexander L. McKay enlisted in the Confederate Service as a surgeon. On May 15th of 1863, McKay was commissioned as a surgeon into the 60th North Carolina Infantry. In August of that year, he was transferred to the Field & Staff Corps. McKay served in a Scottish Highland Regiment in the British Army before immigrating to America. CONDITION: the flask shows one very minor dent to the body. The inscription is clear, and the silver-plated finish is nearly 100%. The charger functions well. (02-20985/BF). $900-1,300.

AMBROTYPE OF GENERAL DANVILLE LEADBETTER, CSA.

This 6th plate ambrotype is reported to be General Danville Leadbetter, who was born in Maine but fought for the Confederacy in his adopted state of Alabama during the Civil War. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1836 and was 3rd in his class. He initially joined the 1st Artillery, but shortly transferred to the Engineers. He became a well-known and highly regarded engineer prior to the Civil War. He fought for his adopted state of Alabama and served in the Confederate Engineers, rising to the rank of General. After the war, he fled to Mexico and subsequently moved to Canada. This image shows a seated waist-up view in civilian clothing. There is a gilded brass mat & frame, and a pasteboard photo case. CONDITION: image remains quite sharp. The spine of the case has been reinforced. (02-20981/BF). $200-400.

BUCKLE. 62 x 79mm SC state seal of Palmetto tree, shields, & “1776”. This appears to be cast, not stamped like the examples in text. Complete w/ bar & belt hook. There is no reported history of where it was supposed to have been excavated. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: letter of authenticity by Steve Mullinax. This group contains a small brass book measuring approx. 3/4" x 7/8” containing 4 tiny photographs of Confederate Generals. The book has a central border with 2 double sided frames & brass covers with foliate & geometric designs. There is a loop at the top, likely for suspension from a chain. This group also contains a printed CDV titled “GEN. LEE”. The CDV depicts a younger Robert E. Lee in his Mexican War uniform. There is no back mark. CONDITION: miniature photo album shows light wear but has no noticeable catch to close the book. CDV shows light wear. (02-20132/BF). $200-300.

6 CIVIL WAR ERA PHOTOGRAPHS.

1,2) The first two images in this group depict a waist-up view of Garrett Puffer of Company B of the 1st Michigan Cavalry, along with his wife, Pheobe Puffer. The uniformed photo of Puffer is a 6th plate tintype showing him in a shell jacket with M1851 sword belt & plate. He is holding a Cavalry saber in his right hand and a Colt army pistol in his left hand. The sword scabbard sits across his legs. Puffer’s headgear is difficult to discern, but appears to be a Whipple hat. The hat clearly shows crossed sabers on the front with possibly another insignia above & on the side. His wife’s image measures 2 7/8” x 2 5/8” and shows her seated in a polka dot dress. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: the images come with a letter from the person who originally sold the images to Mr. Mattox, and information about Puffer and the 1st Michigan Cavalry. CONDITION: both images are in rough condition but significant details can be discerned. 3) CDV image of a standing 2nd Lieutenant in a 9-button frock coat wearing an M1851 belt & buckle. The frock coat has a 6th Corps Badge pinned to the left breast. The back mark reads, in part, “MEADE BROTHERS NEW YORK”. CONDITION: a very crisp image but it is slightly trimmed at the base. 4) A 1/4 plate tintype of 2 standing enlisted men. One wears a 4-button sack coat with kepi & kersey blue trousers. The other wear a 9-button frock coat with kepi & kersey blue trousers. Gilded brass mat & frame with a wood & leather case. CONDITION: image is relatively sharp. Case has a tape repaired spine. 5) A very interesting 1/4 plate tintype showing a standing, well-groomed soldier in a 4-button sack coat, holding a musket with bayonet in both hands. He wears an enlisted belt with buckle and a cross belt with plate attached to a cartridge box on his left side. Gilded brass mat & frame. Wood & leather case with detached spine. CONDITION: image remains crisp & undamaged. 6) A 9th plate ambrotype of a seated woman in a striped dress. Thermoplastic case with a basket of fruit on both sides. CIVIL WAR UNION CAVALRY 2 SOLDIER TINTYPE.

This 1/4 plate tintype depicts 2 enlisted Union Cavalry soldiers in blue tinted shell jackets. They each wear a standard enlisted kepi with no visible insignia. They have carbine slings with carbines clipped to the swivels. They each have oval “US” belt plates on their belts with no other visible accoutrements. They wear enlisted pants that have not been tinted, and standard issue shoes. Gilded brass frame & mat with wood & paperboard case. CONDITION: the image shows some minor creases and there are scattered losses/wear to the emulsion. However, the image of the 2 soldiers remains clear. There are minor spots of oxidation on the mat. The hinge of the case has been reinforced. (02-20979/BF). $700-900.

TINTYPE OF A STANDING CIVIL WAR ENLISTED SOLDIER.

This 6th plate tintype has a very interestingly clothed soldier, likely of the Cavalry, that appears to be a Private. He wears a long coat resembling a frock coat with an open lapelled collar and 3 buttons down the front. He appears to wear a model 1851 eagle buckle on belt with 2 cap pouches in the front. He has an over-the-shoulder sling, presumably for the carbine he holds in his right hand. On his head is a standard enlisted kepi. Gilded brass mat & frame. Thermo-plastic case marked, in part, “Littlefield, Parsons & Co., MANUFACTURERS OF Daguerreotype Cases.”. CONDITION: image has a few barely noticeable creases and one small loss of emulsion in the field, not affecting the soldier. Mat & frame are complete. Case is undamaged. (02-20980/BF). $800-1,400.

This 6th plate tintype depicts a knees-up view of a seated Infantry Private. He wears sky blue pants & vest with a 4-button sack coat over it. In his right hand is a musket. On his head is an interesting oil cloth kepi, often worn for rain protection. Gilded mat & frame with wood & paperboard case. CONDITION: image is exceptionally sharp with no visible problems. Mat & frame are crisp. Case is complete but has a tape reinforced hinge. (02-20982/BF). $350-500.

1) A 1/4 plate tintype photo of a standing Union Infantry Private wearing a 9-button frock coat. He has a standard issue kepi, and he wears an enlisted belt with brass “US” in oval buckle and a cap pouch at the front. On his right side is a bayonet & scabbard on the belt. He holds a musket with bayonet in his right hand. The backdrop is a camp scene showing tents & flags. Gilded brass mat & frame. Wood & paperboard case. CONDITION: image has no issues. Case is made up of parts from 2 different cases and there is no hinge. 2) A 6th plate ambrotype of 2 seated Federal Soldiers. They both appear to wear 4-button sack coats with vests beneath & blue kersey trousers. Each holds a pistol in their right hand, and one soldier has a non-regulation foot officer’s sword in his left hand. They both wear oil cloth kepis. The soldier on the right is smoking cheroot. Gilded brass frame with no mat. Thermoplastic case with label that reads, in part, “LITTLEFIELD, PARSONS & CO., DAGUERREOTYPE CASES”. CONDITION: image is quite nice with no damage. Case has a small crack in one corner. 3) A CDV size tintype of a soldier wearing an M1872 Infantry frock coat. He has a Civil War style belt with an oval brass “US” buckle. He wears a 45/70 bayonet scabbard on his right side. He has a musket in his left hand with fixed bayonet. The soldier is wearing a plain, unadorned kepi. Background is a studio drape. Gilded brass mat & frame. Wood & paperboard case. CONDITION: image is in fine condition and appears to be signed by the soldier below his feet. Mat & frame have a bit of verdigris. Case has a repaired hinge. 4) A 9th plate image showing a waist-up view of a Union Soldier wearing a 4-button sack coat. There is no equipment or other uniform parts visible. Gilded brass mat & frame. Partial thermoplastic case. CONDITION: image has a few bubbles & staining to the emulsion. FASCINATING 1/2 PLATE TINTYPE OF A FRONTIER FAMILY

This extraordinary image depicts a husband & wife with their son & family dog. The wife holds a large, shoulder-height walking stick and has a large floppy hat at her side. The boy has a wide brim hat with a checkered shirt. He holds a fishing pole in his left hand, and there is a creel on a belt around his waist. The husband has a wide brim hat with a checkered shirt & tie of the same material. On the right side of his leather belt is a cartridge pouch, and he has an M1849 Ames Rifleman’s knife tucked into the belt on his left side. In his right hand is a rare Roper revolving shotgun manufactured between 1867 & 1876 in Amherst, MA & Hartford, CT. A medium size terrier-like dog reclines at everyone’s feet. A very interesting & provocative image of an everyday frontier family. Octagonal gilded mat with gilded brass frame, and half of a wood & leather case. CONDITION: image has a few spots of emulsion but remains substantially clear. Interesting, seldom seen subject matter. Frame & mat have slight oxidation spots. Case portion shows moderate wear. This full standing view depicts a young man wearing what may be a hunting smock or a crude uniform. He holds a half stock hunting rifle in his left hand. He wears a cloth or leather belt that has a pistol stuck into the right side. The pistol is a bit unclear but appears to be a Joslyn Army revolver. He also wears an over-the-shoulder strap with a hunting bag & attached powder horn. CONDITION: this image has no frame or mat, but is housed in a plexiglass protective frame. This lot consists of 1 enlisted belt & brass “US” in oval buckle. / 1 Scabbard for a 58 Cal. bayonet. / 1 Cap box with no inner flap. / 1 Carbine cuff with buckle. / 1 Holster, likely for a Colt Army with a modified closing tab. / 1 Civilian holster with tooled decoration that includes foliate & geometric motifs. Holster is for a larger pistol, such as a Remington or Colt Army. The back of the holster is marked “S08X”. The belt loop is held on by two copper rivets. There are two slits cut into the base of the holster, likely for a leg lanyard. CONDITION: all items show moderate wear. Most have flaking & flexing, but all remain solid and display well. A classic example of a spherical hand grenade of the Civil War period with a threaded fuze hole. Grenade is approx. 3” in diameter and weighs about 1.5 lbs. 50” belt with brass buckle of type which Dr. Lon Keim shows identical one on belt in his 1987 book “CONFEDERATE GENERAL ISSUE ACCOUTREMENT PLATES” page 350 inscribed to KIA Confederate soldier. Sling hook has New Haven, CT maker’s mark. CONDITION: good overall, belt supple with wear. (02-20007/JS). $500-700.

ROLLER BUCKLE. 1) BELT. This is a white buff leather belt with a dyed brown face, measuring approx. 44” in length. It is made in 2 pieces and features an iron roller buckle secured by 2 copper rivets. It is likely this is a belt for a fuse pouch, possibly used by the Navy. CONDITION: belt is a bit stiff but somewhat pliable. Buckle has a dark patina but is functional. (02-20106/BF). 2) BUCKLE. A standard issue US oval enlisted man’s buckle of the Civil War. There is a large “US” on the front, and the reverse has 2 spade hooks & a tongue. CONDITION: buckle has a dark patina and appears to be an early battlefield find. (02-20109/BF). $400-700.

3 EARLY AMERICAN CANTEENS.

Lot #3126 (Sale Order 126 of 487)

1) This wooden canteen measures 6 5/8” in diameter and is 2 3/4" thick. It is painted green and has a 1-piece outer rim combined with the front & back. The stopper is raised and is of octagonal form with a round top wooden stopper. There are 2 holes on the side of the canteen, possibly to affix a carrying strap, and a breathing hole on the side of the spout. CONDITION: painted surface is about 85%, and there is a crack to one side of the body. 2) This wooden canteen measures 11” in diameter and is 5” thick. It is painted black and has barrel-like stays on the outside ring combined with a 1-piece front & back. There are raised sections on the side to facilitate a carrying rope. 2 Iron rings, similar to a barrel, hold the sections of edge together. It has a spout that is slightly raised with no stopper. CONDITION: painted surface is approx. 80%. The spout has rodent chew marks at the edges. The iron hoops have an oxidized patina. 3) This tin canteen is shaped like a flask and measures 7” in height by 5” at its widest point. It is made with a solid front & back soldered to a 1” side strip. The spout rises 1” from the top and is separately applied. CONDITION: the tin has an overall aged, gray patina. There are no dents in the body of the canteen. (02-20107/BF). $600-900.

15 SPURS DATING FROM THE ANTEBELLUM ERA TO WWI.

This group contains a number of early spurs dating from the 1830s to the early 20th century. Several of these spurs appear to be of styles in common usage during the Civil War by Union, as well as Confederate, forces. It appears that the only post-Civil War spurs are a pair of M1904 US Cavalry spurs. CONDITION: spurs all show wear, and a few have losses to the rowels. Several have pieces of leather attached. All appear quite functional, and the rowels spin. (02-20110/BF). $500-800.

BRASS BODIED MARCHING DRUM.

This drum measures 8 1/4" high with a 13 1/2" diameter, and likely dates from the third quarter of the 19th century. The body of the drum is brass, and the hoops are black painted wood. The original ropes have white buff leather tugs. The original skins are in place at the top & bottom. There is no maker’s label apparent. CONDITION: drum shows light to moderate wear overall with more significant wear at the top of the top rim, likely from drumsticks. The top skin is intact. The bottom skin has an 8” tear on one side and a smaller 2” tear near the edge. Ropes are unbroken and tugs are all present. (02-20120/BF). $200-400.

3 CIVIL WAR PERIOD CAP BOXES.

1) This cap box has no markings but does have an interior flap. The construction is sewn throughout with no rivets. The front flap has a “1” in the center. The finial is brass of a somewhat stubby form. The reverse shows 2 narrow, sewn belt loops. The closure tab has a single row of stitching. CONDITION: box shows light to moderate wear throughout. 2) This cap box has no markings but it does have an interior flap. The construction is quite crude and appears to be possibly pig skin. The construction is sewn throughout with no rivets. The front flap has several sets of initials carved into it, the most prominent of which is “AM”. The finial is brass of a shortened form. The reverse has 2 sewn belt loops, one of which had become detached and reconnected with a field repair. The closure tab has a single row of crude stitching. CONDITION: box shows moderate wear throughout with remnants of the interior wool. 3) This crudely made cap box has no markings but it does have an interior flap. The construction is crude and utilized bridle leather. The construction is sewn throughout with no rivets. The front flap is short and a bit square-ish. The finial is completely round. The reverse has 2 sewn belt loops. The closure tab is missing. CONDITION: box shows moderate wear throughout. Straps are complete. There is a small separation at the lower right, as viewed. US M1851 SWORD BELT PLATE WITH BELT.

This rectangular sword belt plate has a central eagle with a 3-piece silvered wreath surrounding. The reverse of the plate is unmarked, but the keeper has the number “9 05”. The buckle is on a white buff belt dyed brown on the exterior. There are vestiges of an ID on the inside of the belt; however, wear has made deciphering the marks impossible. CONDITION: buckle generally shows light wear and is a good fit with the keeper. Belt is a bit stiff but remains quite solid. (02-20134/BF). $300-500.

US MILITIA OFFICER’S KEPI.

This kepi has a blue wool body with a single row of narrow, black mohair trim around the kepi, up the front & both sides to the crown. The crown has a circle of the same trim with a quatrefoil inside. The front rise of the kepi is about 2”, and the rear is about 5 1/8”. The front has a silvered number “3”, which appears to be the second of two numbers. The first number is missing. No chinstrap or side buttons. Unbound, thick leather visor. Brown leather sweatband with no lining. CONDITION: kepi shows significant moth damage primarily to the left front, as viewed. Visor is attached & solid, though it does show some heat damage. US M1851 SWORD BELT & PLATE.

A fine example of an M1851 sword belt plate with applied silver wreath. The belt is an early buff leather belt dyed brown on its face. The belt is complete with the appropriate sword hangers & the seldom seen over-the-shoulder strap. The buckle is numbered on the reverse “716”, and the keeper is numbered “572”. The keeper is an excellent fit and appears to have always been with this buckle. CONDITION: belt is complete & undamaged, though lightly soiled and a bit stiff. The buckle shows only light wear. A REVOLUTIONARY WAR STYLE SILVER GORGET & A

FANTASY HUDSON BAY ARROWHEAD. 1) GORGET. A well-made silver gorget with the British arms on the front with a ribbon below that reads “DIEU ET MON DROIT”. There are 2 small silver studs at the suspension holes, and there is a touchmark that reads “JR” just below each stud. The reverse is plain. We feel this gorget is likely a fine quality reproduction. We encourage interested parties to closely inspect this piece. CONDITION: very light wear overall. 2) ARROWHEAD. A brass 4 1/2" arrowhead engraved with foliate motifs, a sun, and the words “FRIENDSHIP TRADE” on one side, and the other side reads “HUDSON’S BAY COMPANY 1754”. There are 2 holes in the tang of the arrowhead. We believe this to be a fantasy piece. CONDITION: light wear overall. (02-19910-2/BF). $150-300.

US M1855 PERCUSSION RIFLE MUSKET LOCK.

This fine original lock is marked with a large eagle on the door that covers the Maynard tape primer system. In front of the door the lock is marked “U.S. SPRINGFIELD”, and to the rear of the hammer is the date “1859”. The lock is mechanically functional and includes both attachment screws. CONDITION: lock has a somewhat mottled, light gray patina with peppery areas. (02-20148/BF). $200-300.

US M1841 SABER BAYONET.

Overall length: 30 3/8”. Blade length: 25 1/2". The yataghan blade has a single wide fuller and is stamped at the ricasso “1861”. Solid brass hilt with a bird’s head form pommel. The top flat of the bayonet is stamped “3062”. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray mottled patina. Brass has a pleasing mustard patina. Spring is functional. (02-20062/BF). $200-350.

1) US. An M1855/70 socket bayonet of the Civil War era measuring 22” overall with a 16 3/4" blade. The ricasso is marked “US”. The scabbard is brass mounted leather with a riveted leather belt loop. CONDITION: bayonet has a dark patina but is complete & undamaged. Scabbard is a bit flexed but remains quite functional. Belt loop shows moderate wear. (02-20069/BF). 2) ENFIELD. A P1853 English bayonet for an Enfield rifle. Overall length is 21” with a blade length of 17 1/2". Triangular blade. CONDITION: this example appears to be excavated and has a somewhat pitted, dark finish. The end of the socket is a bit split. (02-20070/BF). 3) ENFIELD. A nice example of a P1853 English bayonet for an Enfield rifle. Overall length is 20 3/4" with a blade length of 17 1/4". Triangular blade stamped on the ricasso “S. An American belt axe of the late 18th or early 19th century with a 12 1/2” haft. The head measures 6” in length with a 2 7/8” bit and 1 1/4" across at the eye. TRADE PISTOLS. Cal. 56. NSN. Bbl. 8”. Both of these fine trade pistols have brass barrels with naturalistic decoration on the top surrounding the word “LONDON”. There are 3 proofs on the left side of the barrels, and the barrel tangs are steel with engraved tulip designs. The locks have decorative engraving on the cock and to the rear of the cock. The lock plates are marked below the pans “W KETLAND & CO”. Brass trigger guards with star-like engraved designs at the bottom. Brass buttcaps, escutcheon plates, side plates, entry thimbles, and ramrod thimbles. Stocks have inspector’s marks behind the side plates. Wooden ramrods. CONDITION: barrels & other brass parts have a mellow mustard patina. The locks have a dark overall patina, and both locks hold both full & half cock. The reverse of the card is marked “Anderson PHOTOGRAPHER, 785 Broadway, cor. of 10th NEW YORK”. The top of the reverse has an ink inscription that reads “Hon. W. F. Cody. JACKET. The jacket is made of blue/gray wool fabric with 8 buttons down the front and 2 buttons on each sleeve. The buttons are Civil War period manufactured by Van Wart Son & Co. of Birmingham, England. Van Wart manufactured buttons for the Confederacy, but most of the South Carolina & Georgia buttons did not reach the Confederacy in time to be utilized during the war. The collar & cuffs are trimmed in black cord, and there is no decoration on the rear of the coat. Interestingly, the button holes are hand-sewn. The liner is tan cotton and quilted on both sides. The sleeves are lined in the same tan cotton material. There is a number in the interior back near the collar, “1905”. CONDITION: coat shows minor moth damage. The interior has some staining. A fine pair of blue uniform trousers with a 1 1/2" red stripe down the outside of each leg, indicating use by Artillery. The trousers have outside waist suspender buttons and a cinching buckle in the rear. The fly has a total of 4 buttons. The inner top of the pants is lined with a striped cotton material, and the pocket bags are a coarse white muslin. The legs of the trousers are unlined. CONDITION: trousers show very little wear and, aside from light soiling to the lining, could be considered unissued. (02-20983/BF). $200-400.

COPY OF A HAND DRAWN MAP OF THE AREA SURROUNDING

PORT HUDSON, LOUISIANA. This map measures approximately 23" x 17 1/2". The map appears to be an early 20th century copy of a period hand-drawn map showing the area west & north of Port Hudson including The Mississippi River, The Atchafalaya River, Cat Island, Bayou Sarah, The Old River, Bayou Rouge, Williamsport, and Semmesport. It is a copy of an ink drawn map that was likely drawn during the Civil War period. An accompanying tag with the map is dated June 25, 1908 and attests that the owner was given the map at Semmesport on the Atchafalaya River by Major General Banks Commanding the Department of the Gulf. The note goes on to talk about a company of cavalry and a battery of artillery joining the 13th Connecticut Volunteers on the right bank of The Mississippi River. The note is very lightly signed at the bottom but under black light the signature of Captain Apollos Comstock becomes apparent. We believe that the note was created to entice a collector & enhance the value of this map. Although this map has tremendous visual appeal, we do believe it is a copy. CONDITION: the map itself remains exceptionally clear and easy to read. The edges are frayed and there are a few small holes. Most folds and edges have been reinforced with tape possibly of archival quality. The note is quite lengthy but very light and difficult to read without the aid of a black light. OF THE CIVIL WAR ERA. Bag body measures approximately 11 1/2" x 12”. It has a closing flap on the front & an over the shoulder sling. The flap is edged in a similar tan cotton canvas material. The shoulder strap is approximately 1 1/2" wide & sewn to the back of the bag w/ machine stitching. The strap itself also exhibits machine stitching. CONDITION: the bag remains solid though heavily stained and quite dirty. The strap shows heavy wear w/ some breaks, but remains in a single piece. This item shows significant wear & may post date the Civil War. (02-21164/BF). $50-100.

AUTOGRAPH SIGNATURE OF COMMODORE STEPHEN DECATUR.

A clipped autograph signature in ink of the famous United States Naval hero, Commodore Stephen Decatur. He was born in 1779 and died in early 1820 as a result of a duel with Commodore James Barron. The duel resulted from Decatur’s comments on Barron’s actions during the Chesapeake-Leopard affair in 1807. Among Decatur’s many commands were the USS Enterprise, USS United States, USS Constitution, and the USS Guerriere. The signature is in a 15” x 10 1/2" gilt frame along with a hand-colored engraving of Decatur standing aboard ship with his foot on a cannon. The reverse has a certificate of authenticity with intact wax seal for Charles Hamilton Autographs, Inc. of New York City. CONDITION: autograph is bold and easily read. Engraving is undamaged but has a tiny bit of foxing. Frame shows light wear. Mat is a bit faded. (02-21031/BF). $200-400.

Overall length: 31”. Blade length: 25”. This sword has a plain blade with a single medium fuller near the spine. The blade is stamped on both sides with a running fox and the initials “SH” on the fox. There is a small stamp near the ricasso that appears to be a crowned “6”. Solid brass hilt with a heart-shaped counterguard engraved on the bottom “M=LANCASHIRE” & “10/54”. The quillon has been removed. There are 2 plain branches that intersect the plain knuckle bow before it enters the base of the round pommel with large capstan. Spiraled grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium to dark overall patina with a few nicks to the edge. The hilt has been cleaned but does enjoy an attractive patina. Engraving is clear. (02-20021/BF). $600-800.

BRITISH P1796 STYLE INFANTRY OFFICER’S SWORD.

Sword measures 40 1/2" overall with a 33 3/4" blade. This interesting sword has the appearance of a British P1796 infantry sword. This example has an added finger ring inside the knuckle bow, and the blade appears to be from a Spanish 18th century rapier. The blade has 3 facets on each side and a short central 7 1/2" fuller with worn words that appear to read, “VII DIOS VIVA LEI YVII REI”. Gilded brass hilt with double kidney guard, the inside guard folds for comfortable wearing. Plain knuckle bow. Embellished urn-shaped pomme. Wire-wrapped grip. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina with some evidence of cleaned, light pitting. There are numerous nicks to the edge of the blade. The hilt is quite solid and retains traces of its original gilded finish. The folding guard functions well.(02-20027/BF). $400-600.

Drop quillon of extended cylindrical form with a conical pommel. 6-Lobed wood grip is possibly a later repair. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina with scattered light pitting. The flat blade is engraved on one side with an arm & sword emanating from a cloud, the bust of a woman, and the man in the moon. The other side is engraved with a 6-pointed star and 2 other fanciful motifs. There is an engraved small brass counterguard showing floral decoration on both sides. Brass ferrule & pommel cap. Green arsenic dyed certifiably antique ivory grip with diagonal serrations. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina with a few scattered darker areas. Brass has a pleasing patina. Overall length: 36 1/2". Blade length: 30 1/2". This smallsword appears to utilize a much earlier blade, likely from a 15th to 17th century rapier. It was the custom to reuse & re-hilt family blades with heroic history. This blade is hexagonal for the first 6 1/4" and then transitions to a simple raised medial ridge for the rest of its length. The top facet of the hexagonal portion is inlaid with brass or low carat gold in the form of flowers. The gilded brass hilt depicts numerous arms & foliate motifs. All portions of the hilt are heavily embellished. The pas d’ane are quite high, and the knuckle bow has a central floral motif. The grip & pommel have a similar twisted panel decoration showing a variety of flora & arms. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a gray patina and is badly pitted throughout. Overall length: 36 3/8”. Blade length: 29 5/8”. Trilobate blade has a single narrow fuller opposite a raised medial ridge. There is a small engraved decoration 3” up from the hilt. The hilt appears to be heavily cleaned brass that has been coated with a preservative. The guard shows individuals on horseback, as does the central part of the upper guard. The quillon is the face of a gorgon, and the pas d’ane are quite high. The knuckle bow has a central motif of a figure with clasped hands. Melon-shaped pommel appears to be a replacement. Wire-wrapped grip with Turk’s head knots above & below. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a dark patina. Hilt is solid but could use some TLC. (02-20102/BF). $400-600.

CONDITION: blade has severe pitting and a mottled patina. Hilt has a pleasing patina on the brass. The grip shows some wear and appears to have been coated with a preservative. The blade has a single wide fuller and is decorated with gold highlighted etching on a blued field over the first 9 3/4". Etching includes foliate & patriotic motifs. A small panel near the hilt is etched “A S & C”. Gilded brass hilt with a single turned down guard that features a lion in oval above a decorative swag. Knuckle bow depicts Cupid on one side and a 4-petal flower on the other. Fancy foliate & geometrically decorated pommel. Certifiably antique ivory grip. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina with minor staining. Blued field is approx. 80% complete. Gold highlighted etching is nearly 100%. Hilt retains most of its original gilded finish. Even though the style of this sword is 18th century, we believe the sword dates to the first half of the 19th century and probably saw use as a court sword. The hilt is believed to be silver plate and is of a smallsword form. It shows an oval cupped disc guard and rudimentary pas d’ane. The guard, knuckle bow, hexagonal urn pommel, and grip all have a similar knot-like motif. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium to light gray overall patina. There is an engraved iron ferrule with a small iron capstan. The 1-piece wood grip has 3 oval iron escutcheons on each side. There is a small iron chain knuckle bow from the top of the grip to the end of one quillon. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray overall patina. Crossguard is loose. Etching includes a spray of arms, jumping stag, foliate motifs, geometric motifs, a winged head, and a winged heart. The brass guard is of simple cruciform style. Plain brass ferrule. The 1-piece wood grip has 3 oval brass escutcheons on each side. There is an unassociated partial scabbard with this sword. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray overall patina. The sword itself likely dates to the late 18th century and utilizes an earlier family blade. The crossguard & ricasso are brass with engraved petal decoration. One quillon turns down & the other turns up. Large wooden grip with copper wire wrap is topped by a brass capstan. No scabbard. EUROPEAN ARTILLERY STILETTO, LIKELY OF ITALIAN

ORIGIN. This solid steel stiletto measures 10 1/2" in length with a 7” triangular blade. The crossguard has lobed quillons, and the pommel is decorated w/ engraved scenes. The grip appears to be turned steel. Weapons like this could be used as a secondary weapon in the left hand during a sword fight, or were used to spike artillery weapons if capture was imminent. These weapons date from the late 16th century to the early 18th century, and this example appears to be circa 1680. A fine example of a rarely seen weapon from an early period. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina w/ minor evidence of cleaned pitting. There is a bit of cleaned pitting on the crossguard, as well as the pommel. The grip area shows light pitting. BRITISH P1856 ENFIELD BAYONET.

Overall length: 28 1/2". Blade length: 23”. A fine example of a British P1856 saber bayonet of German manufacture that was used with the Enfield rifle. Enfield rifles were imported to America in large quantities by both the Union and the Confederacy during the Civil War. Plain blade has a single wide fuller near the spine. There is a small stamp near the hilt that resembles a hot air balloon. Iron crossguard numbered “836” with muzzle ring at the top. Iron pommel in the shape of a bird’s head. 2-Piece black composite grips held on by 4 pins on one side and 3 pins with an iron spring on the other. Iron mounted leather scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina. Hilt has a somewhat darker patina. Grips are undamaged. Scabbard body is a bit flaked but sturdy. Mounts have a dark patina. (02-20067/BF). $250-400.

There is a slot at the top of the knuckle bow, presumably for a knot. 2-Piece black composite grips with a slide area at the top for fitting to a rifle. Iron spring is complete. Iron mounted black leather scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina with minor staining. The edge has several shallow nicks. Hilt shows light wear. A good example of a French Hussar Officer’s M1854 Sabretache of the 2nd Empire. Sabretache measures approx. 11 1/2" x 10” at its widest point. The crowned eagle front plate measures 6 3/4" x 5”. The interior of the pocket, as well as the flap, are lined in coarse red wool. There are 3 brass loops at the top for suspension. CONDITION: the leather shows some crazing & flaking from heat. All 3 links at the top are present. The front plate is undamaged. (02-20114/BF). $200-400.

US ARTILLERY OFFICER’S CHAPEAU DE BRAS.

This early chapeau measures 18 1/2" from point to point, and rises over 11” from the low point. It appears to be made of fine black beaver felt with a woven trim. There is a large 4 1/2" gold bullion cockade with a woven black drop and 4 gold bullion cords terminated with an early 1-piece artillery button. The artillery button is actually attached to another domed button. The interior lining appears to be black silk. There is no sweatband. CONDITION: hat displays quite well flat, but the crown of the hat is heavily damaged with losses. There is some separation around the trim particularly in the rear center. The artillery button may be an addition. (02-20119/BF). $400-600.

EARLY FRENCH SHAKO.

This early 19th century shako has a black leather body with black felt over the exterior front, back, & sides. There is a red wool band around the top, and the crown is smooth leather. There is a metal cockade on the front that appears to have been white painted. The front plate depicts a crown over an oval with 3 fleur de lis over an arc with the number “50” cut out. Brass faux scale chinstrap with fleur de lis side posts. Leather visor. Leather sweatband with muslin bag in the top. The rear outside of the helmet has a lion head cord holder. CONDITION: helmet shows moderate to heavy wear but there is no major damage. The crown has some losses particularly near the front edge. (02-20135/BF). $400-700.

EUROPEAN INFANTRY SHAKO.

This shako, at first glance, seems to be a French shako for the 1st Infantry and dates likely between 1825 & 1845. The front plate appears to be French, but the cockade above it is likely Prussian. The shako appears to have had some alterations in the past and may be created from different parts of shakos from different time periods. This example has a black felt body over heavy cardboard. It has leather trim on the top, sides, & bottom with a leather visor. The brass diamond front plate has a cutout number “1”. Above the front plate is a black & white Prussian cockade. The shako cords are white cotton. The scaled chinstrap is an early example. The interior has a brown leather sweatband with a cotton muslin bag liner. Although parts of this shako are early, we do not guarantee the age of the entire piece. CONDITION: in general, the shako shows moderate wear with alterations. (02-20137/BF). $300-500.

FRENCH CADET OR DRUMMER BOY UNIFORM.

This coat would likely fit a child aged 8 to 10. It has a gray body piped in white throughout. The overall design shows a faux plastron chest with hemispherical ball buttons. The tails are lined in red and trimmed in red on the outside. The outside of the tails have 2 faux pockets & flaming bomb appliques at the base of the tail. At one time, the tunic had a faux vest attached to the interior. The right side of the faux vest is now missing. The body of the coat is lined in quilted tan cotton, and the sleeves are lined in a similar material. There is an interior stamp that appears to read “L. MARTIN COSTUMIER 18 RUE DU PETIT _HOU__”. CONDITION: 7 original buttons are missing off the front, but the tail/cuff buttons are complete. There is minor moth damage to the body of the coat. The lining is a bit shredded, particularly at the collar. (02-20157/BF). $200-400.

FINE INDIAN MUGHAL PERIOD POWDER HORN.

This attractive nautilus shaped horn is covered in intricately fitted bone panels w/ numerous brass pins attaching each of the panels. There are 2 suspension loops on the inside of the curve and the tip has a turned finial as a cover. The butt end is covered w/ a large silver or silver plate cap w/ a central bone dispensing tip. The overall size is approx. 7 1/2" x 5”. CONDITION: the horn does show expected wear w/ a few very minor chips & losses to the bone plates. The early bone has a wonderful yellowed patina. These early Mughal horns are quite difficult to find in any form or material. (02-21140/BF). $500-800.

EARLY SCOTTISH FLAT STYLE POWDER HORN.

This horn measures approx. 10 1/2" x 4 1/4" at its widest point. It has a brass spout and a serrated edge at the butt with an iron chain for suspension. One side of the horn is engraved “DROMM. CLOGG. BOTHWEL. BRIDGE CAPN. PATTON”. The other side reads “S J . SHEELS 40 JNO ORR”. The Battle of Bothwell Bridge took place on June 22, 1679 and was fought between government troops and militant Presbyterian Covenanters. The battle signaled the end of the brief Presbyterian rebellion and took place over the River Clyde in Lanarkshire, Scotland. CONDITION: the horn is surprisingly solid and shows light to moderate wear overall. (02-17916/BF). $600-1,000.

Both of these flasks measure approx. 9” in height and about 4” in width. They have the classic peace design with an eagle over a ring of stars surrounding clasped hands with a spray of arms beneath. The chargers are unmarked and have a straight spout. One of the flasks has a leather shoulder strap. CONDITION: both flasks show light wear with minimal dents, and both chargers function. 2 POWDER HORNS.

This lot includes 2 plain powder horns. The first measures 12” in length and 2 1/2" across at the butt. The horn is octagonally faceted 3” from the spout with a raised octagonal ring at the spout. The butt plug is slightly domed and held in place by iron pins. The second horn measures 9 3/4" in length and 2 1/2" across at the butt. The horn has a carved spout with the original wood plug. The buttcap is slightly domed with a brass ring in the center. CONDITION: both horns show light overall wear. (02-20169/BF). $200-300.

1) Unmarked period made powder horn with threaded spot. Iron sling bracket on plug and on horn near spot. Thin brown leather sling. CONDITION: horn retains a dark patina, exhibiting scattered marks from storage and handling, and several cracks around the plug that have been reinforced with pins. Spout has broken and is missing a section on one side. 2) Large brass powder flask measuring 8 3/4" in length. Flask body exhibits a seashell motif on either side. CONDITION: flask exhibits heavy patina overall, with mild marks from storage and handling. 3) Brass powder flask measuring 7 7/8"" in length. Flask body exhibits a seashell motif on either side. CONDITION: flask exhibits heavy patina overall, with mild marks from storage and handling. 4) Small brass powder flask measuring 6" in length. Flask body exhibits a scene of 2 birds on either side. 2 VINTAGE SCOTTISH FLAT POWDER HORNS.

1) Overall length: 9 5/8”. Width: 3”. This horn has an elaborate gilded brass spout & buttcap. The spout plug is in the shape of a dragon head and has a pick on the other end. Both the spout and the butt are completely decorated with foliate & scroll motifs. The face of the horn has a large gilded brass applied spray of arms that includes a gun, sword, hat, flag, and powder horn. CONDITION: light wear overall. 2) Overall length: 8 1/4”. Width: 2 1/2". This horn has a wood plug & spout. The plug has a carved horn finial, and the spout has a bone plug with a pick on the end. The body of the horn has a silver inlay in the shape of a tulip with foliate motifs. CONDITION: very light wear. (02-17917/BF). $400-600.

This lot contains 1 powder horn measuring 13 1/2" with relief carved scrollwork & zigzag embellishments. The horn is 3” across at the butt, & the plug is held in place with wooden pins. / 1 Powder flask measuring 9” with a fluted copper body & a brass charger. The charger is marked “AM FLASK & CAP CO”. / 1 Powder flask measuring 4 3/4". The flask has scroll decoration on a brass body with brass charger and a brass base with 2 chambers covered by small brass covers secured with a screw. / 1 Powder flask measuring 3 3/4" with a brass body & brass charger. The body is decorated with an eagle over crossed pistols surrounded by a glory and 13 stars. A banner beneath the eagle reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. / 1 Powder flask measuring 3 1/2" with a plain brass body & brass charger. The charger lever is broken. CONDITION: all items show light wear except as noted. The large and two smallest powder flasks have minor dents to the body. All chargers function except for the smallest flask. WONDERFUL PAIR OF MEXICAN CALLING HORNS.

1) This horn measures approx. 11 1/2" in length. It has a turned concave mouthpiece with an open butt. The deep engraving includes a man carrying a rifle & hunting w/ a dog. Beside this visage is an early rendition of the Mexican national seal featuring an eagle w/ snake on cactus. Below this level is a large, fanciful cartouche w/ the initials “C.H.J.”. Opposite the cartouche is a running deer & jaguar in a palm forest. 2) This horn measures approx. 12" in length. It has a turned concave mouthpiece w/ an open butt. The deep engraving includes a man on horseback w/ another gentleman carrying a sword. Also in the upper section is a fanciful cartouche w/ the initials “C.T.J.”. The lower section shows a large spread-wing eagle flanked by Mexican flags. Opposite this is a dog w/ a duck in its mouth and a duck flying above the dog. Given the initials on this fine pair of calling horns, they probably belonged to brothers or a father & son pair. Horns like this were used to call dogs during the hunt. They were also used as an audible locator for hunters that became lost during extended hunts. CONDITION: both horns have a wonderful early patina & show expected wear. Neither horn shows any offensive damage and they both present an impressive visual impact. (02-21141/BF). $500-1,000.

3 EARLY BULLET MOLDS.

1) A 9-cavity buckshot mold measuring approx. 11 3/4" in length & features a brass body with iron sprue cutter. The mold has 2 turned wooden handles with large brass ferrules. CONDITION: the mold shows wear but is fully functional & complete. 2) An iron 36 Cal. bullet mold is for a Colt pistol. The entire mold, including the sprue cutter, are iron. The 2 cavities are for a conical & round bullet. The sprue cutter is marked “COLT’S PATENT”. CONDITION: iron appears to be heavily cleaned at one point, but has reacquired some patina. 3) An early iron, scissor-type bullet mold of approx. 36 Cal. CONDITION: the entire mold has a dark, oxidized patina. (02-20118/BF). $300-400.
