The Struggle for the South Atlantic: The Armada of the Strait, 1581-84 Lot #98 (Sale Order 47 of 68) Very good condition, hardcover. Published by Routledge, 2017. "The Armada of the Strait under Don Diego Flores de Valdes in 1581-84 came at a crucial juncture in global politics. Philip II of Spain had assumed the crown of Portugal and its overseas empire, and Francis Drake s daring peacetime raids had challenged the dominance of Spain and Portugal in the Americas. The armada was intended to ensure the loyalty of Portuguese Brazil; bolster its defences against hostile native peoples, and English and French pirates and interlopers; and fortify and settle the Strait of Magellan to prevent further incursions into the Pacific. Pedro de Rada, the official scribe of the armada, kept a detailed, neutral chronicle of the venture which remained in private hands until 1999 but is now held in the Henry E. Huntington Library in San Marino, California."

The Classic Era of American Comics (2000) Lot #102 (Sale Order 51 of 68) Hardcover very good condition. "The world has never seen the like of the American comic book. In their heyday, the top 500 comics sold over 60 million copies a month, and are still avidly collected. Taking us from the 1930s into the 1950s, Nicky Wright tells the fascinating story of the rise of this highly creative popular art form through its decline due to the self-censorship imposed by Congress and the churches. Highly illustrated with a huge range of front covers, comic strips, and images of the characters, the book also covers the personalities who wrote, drew, and edited these classics. It's a history that will enlighten newcomers, enthrall fans, and be as treasured as the best comics themselves. "

Out of Time: Designs for the Twentieth-Century Future (2000) Lot #103 (Sale Order 52 of 68) Very good condition, hardcover. "Flying cities ... Martian colonies ... spaceships ... robots ... monorails ... bubble-topped cars ... atomic explosions ...
These have all appeared in both artistic renderings of the future for pulp magazines and as serious architectural proposals. In the twentieth century, high and low, fact and fiction mixed in ways that are now impossible to separate. Design references for the future were drawn from engineering, science fiction, avant-garde architecture, pulp fiction and mechanic magazines, aerodynamics, and the 1939 New York World's Fair. And many of these ideas have actually come to pass."
