Rare "Winchester" marked, Advertising Lithograph "Copyright, 1908, By Winchester Repeating Arms Co." Lot #25 (Sale Order 25 of 307) Rare "Winchester" marked, Advertising Lithograph "Copyright, 1908, By Winchester Repeating Arms Co." Titled "Shoot Them and Avoid Trouble". This is one of three identical Lithographs that were found in the Edward F. Forsgard Estate rolled up in one of the closets. These Lithographs will be sold with notarized family documentation that attest to their exceptional original and fine condition. The family chose to have each of these Lithographs professionally framed to further protect their fine condition. These Lithographs were released in 1908 and were quickly recalled due to the ease of interpreting the tag line as calling for shooting the two black men rather than the skunks, especially given the two are rather caricatured and the racial climate of the day. Most had the border with the writing removed before being reshipped to Winchester dealers. The vast majority of these Lithographs have been disposed of in the last century. This rare example remains in outstanding condition. The Lithograph is approximately 32 3/4" W x 25" T with the custom oak frame measuring 35" T x 42 1/2" W. It depicts one man flushing a skunk out of a tree trunk with a stick and a dog and second man startled by the skunk. A double barrel percussion shotgun is leaning against the log. It is marked with "WINCHESTER LOADED SHOTGUN SHELLS" above the scene, "SHOOT THEM AND AVOID TROUBLE" below it, and the "W" trademark logos on the sides. Condition is very fine with mild edge wear, the imagery and text remains vibrant. This is an incredibly rare and fine piece of Winchester advertising history. A Lithograph of this fine quality recently sold at one of the larger auction houses for $11,500.00. To find one of these fine Lithographs is a rare opportunity but to find three of these in one estate is truly unbelievable! FORSGARD ESTATE

Born in 1824, Absalom Baird served as a Brevet Captain in the Civil War during his 39 years of service, eventually reaching the rank of Brigadier General. There is much more information on Mr. Baird available on the internet. The 1864 manufactured Colt is a .31 caliber, 6 shot revolver with 4†barrel and a New York barrel address. The serial number matches on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and backstrap with the last five digits on the wedge and last four digits on the cylinder and arbor. The original wood grips fit perfectly, have the typical dings and dents and retain most of their original varnish. The bore is very good and the action functions properly with solid lock up. The cylinder scene is very good and there is a pleasing amount of blue turning to patina on the barrel. There are traces of case colors on the loading lever. The Colt factory style case is in original, worn condition consistent with the condition of the Colt. There is slight damage to the lock and interior lining with normal bumps and bruises on the exterior. The case is complete with all accoutrements in very good condition, including a double-sided Eagle & Stars flask, a Colts Patent marked bullet mold, a nipple wrench, an unopened Goldmark cap tin, a key and an assortment of round and conical cast lead balls. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Baird fought his first battle at Bull Run under Brigadier General Daniel Tyler. He earned his Medal of Honor after the charge in the Battle of Jonesboro. January 23, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln nominated Baird for appointment to the Brevet Grade of Major General of Volunteers. He was buried in Section 1, 55 at Arlington National Cemetery in June 14,1905.
