Very Rare 19" American wooden "Manikin" by Schoenhut. $1200/1500

Carved wooden socket head depicting an adult man with deeply-defined eye sockets, brown painted eyes, sculpted short curly hair, strong nose, closed mouth, original all-wooden elongated slender body with ball-jointed swivel waist, spring-jointing at shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles, and with original Schoenhut metal stand. Structurally excellent, original finish albeit scuffs and paint rubs on hair and face. American, Schoenhut, the model was marketed as "The Manikin", and few examples can be found today, circa 1912, an early example with very deep sculpting.

35" Very Rare French musical automaton "Jester with Trained Monkey" by Vichy. $3500/5500

Standing upon a wooden base which contains musical and mechanical movements is a paper mache head jester with glass eyes, holding a paper mache monkey with glass eyes and hinged jaw. When wound, the jester blinks his eyes and moves his arms toward the monkey who also blinks his eyes, and hinges his mouth open and closed. Condition: sold as is and needing restoration, the front wood panel needs repair, the monkey's right arm needs attachment. The automaton is attic-found, and is sold as is. It appears to be complete albeit needing cleaning and, likely, adjustment of mechanical movements. Music functions well and is a strong melodious sound. The automaton appeared in Vichy's early catalog as #520, and is extremely rare to find. Vichy, circa 1885.

American, 1930s, from a series of dolls created during the Great Depression by members of the Milwaukee WPA project group; the project specifically called for the design of a 22" doll which would be washable, jointed to sit and stand, and dressed with removable clothes. 17" d x 20"h. Of heavy tinplate, with mansard style roof line, the unique house features a front which hinges up to hide under the roof and provide access to the interior. The house has painted finish with well-shaped window frames, tin front door, dormer windows. The flat roof features a sliding panel which, when opened, reveals a receptacle likely designed as a unique fish bowl or flower pot. The story is told in a series of vignettes which correspond to the various costumes of the accompanying paper doll; there are eight different costumes or scenes. The original matching envelope which held the book, paper doll and costumes is also included. Cover worn, girl is excellent except old cello repair at back neck; costumes, scenes and book are excellent and retain rich colors. The book is labeled S. and J. Fuller at the Temple of Fancy, Rathbone Place, and dated 1811. Very rare to find. Ex-collection Spielzeugmuseum Davos.
