Included with the doll are two antique silk costumes and a miniaturized journal page from Le Figaro titled Ma Poupee. Excellent condition. French, circa 1885.

Jules Steiner, lovely gleaming bisque with beautiful painting, original signed body and body finish. The doll has a blue ribbon award from UFDC 1985 annual convention.

24" 18th Century Gentleman with strongly defined features and enamel eyes. $1200/1600

Shoulderhead of carved wood or firmly-pressed carton depicting a refined gentleman with elongated face, aquiline nose, high forehead, inset enamel eyes, and deeply-defined hair with combmarked waves forming into an elaborate long bound braid that extends below the shoulderplate, painted grey hair, painted complexion with defined closed lips and blushed cheeks, cloth midriff, paper mache lower torso and lower arms with well-defined posed fingers, paper mache shapely legs. The word peluquero (coiffeur) and 1 is ink lettered on the lower torso. He is wearing (frail) gentleman's costume with affixed leather shoes and is posed on wooden stand. Generally excellent. Late 18th/early 19th century.

Posed upon a velvet tapestry covered wooden base is a bisque head nanny with large blue glass eyes, painted features, closed mouth, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms and wearing original magenta silk costume with black velvet trim, lace ruffled bonnet. She rests her hands on the side of a metal cradle fitted with lace and silk blankets and containing a little all-bisque baby. The nanny is designed to lean forward and backward, thus rocking the cradle, when wound at the back. Generally excellent, mechanism functions willfully, doll, costume and presentation are fresh and excellent. Doll marked 2/0. Gaultier, circa 1875.

Marks: SFBJ Paris 239 (incised) Poulbot (incised signature). Bisque excellent, body is appropriate although not original. SFBJ, circa 1914, from design by the famed Parisian artist, Francisque Poulbot, the doll was market for one or two years only as "Rintintin".

30" French Musical Automaton "Lady Magician with Three Surprises" by Jean Roullet. $10000/15000

Posed upon a velvet covered base is a bisque head lady with separate bisque shoulderplate having generously sculpted bosom, brown glass eyes, painted features, brunette wig, carton torso and legs, bisque forearms, and elaborate costume. She is standing behind a gilt pedestal table with elaborate velvet table cover decorated with fringe and embroidery. Arranged on the table are two over-turned gilded flower pots and a gilded die, each hiding a surprise, When wound, music plays and the lady turns her head from side to side, then up and down, taps the pots or die, and one by one, each opens to reveal a bisque doll blowing kisses, a saucy clown, and a revolving bouquet of flowers, while music plays. Condition: all pieces are original except magician's head and missing mouse in floral bouquet; magician's costume is antique but not original; the mechanism and music function well. Jean Roullet, circa 1886, one of the most luxurious pieces offered in their catalog.

19" Wooden Napoleonic-Style Wooden Carriage by Fisher. $1200/1800

An elaborately carved wooden royal carriage, designed to emulate the Napoleonic parade carriage, is constructed with working doors, steps, velvet upholstered seats and door interiors, velvet-covered and fringed driver's seat, and decorative embellishments including winged eagles at each roof corner of the carriage, and with blue painted finish with gilt decorations, tassels, and gilt-decorated red spoked wheels. Excellent condition. During the late 1800s, the Fisher company was considered the apogee of carriage makers; in 1908 they opened Fisher Body in Detroit, and later created car body styles for various manufacturers. During the 1930s the Fisher Body Company ran competitions to publicize their designs; one of these competitions concerned building a model of a Napoleonic carriage which was the traditional logo of the company.

Bisque shoulderhead with blonde sculpted overall curls including curled bangs, pierced ears, painted features, blue eyes, closed mouth, sculpted bodice with ruffled neckline and pink sculpted bow, carton upper torso and cone-shaped skirt which encloses a clockwork mechanism designed to make the doll "walk" on her three spoked metal wheels which wind by key hidden under the costume skirt. Bisque excellent, mechanism intact but needs adjustment. Germany, circa 1875.

15" x 15" base. Posed seated, with crossed legs is a brown-complexioned paper-mache man with brown glass eyes, painted features, hinged lower lip, row of teeth, grey mohair beard, carton torso and legs, metal upper arms, paper-mache lower arms and hands with posed fingers for holding the hose tip in right hand, and coffee cup in left hand. The man is wearing his factory original elaborately wrapped padded turban, velvet jacket, and silk trousers. At his side is a classic "nargile" of wood and gilt metal with braided flexible hose and carved bone mouthpiece. When wound,a number of synchronized and realistic actions should occur such as turning his head toward the nargile and drawing the pipe to his mouth, appearing to inhale, opening and closing eyes and opening jaw. while he should bring the cup of Turkish coffee to his lips. The paper label indicates two tunes. Condition: structurally excellent except missing velvet cover, however mechanism and music need restoration. Leopold Lambert, circa 1886, the automaton appeared in a catalog of that firm identified as No.28 "Turc Fumeur".

Marks: (original paper label on torso). Generally excellent. Japan, circa 1920s, the original paper label indicates that the doll artist was Kenshosai, and that the doll "daigokujyo" was of highest quality. The doll is wearing original costume including inner and outer kimonos, obi, and silk slippers.

Wooden four wheel coach with metal spoked wheels and original painted finish is being pulled by a paper mache horse with glass eyes and applied leather harness. Seated on the front driver's seat is a small bisque doll with glass eyes, open mouth, teeth, paper mache torso and legs in seated pose, bisque forearms, cloth costume and top hat. The coach has two brass plated coach lamps, and an unusual mechanical tin directional sign (taxi light?) labeled "Libre" (free) at the side to which his right hand is attached. When his arm is activated manually, the driver leans to the side and the roof of the coach opens to reveal the candy container interior. Very good condition, uncertain if missing part (pull-string?) of mechanism. French, circa 1885.

Four part carved wooden figure of woman with one-piece head and shapely torso, dowel-jointing at shoulders, bent elbows with pivot jointing at upper arms, expressive fingers, enamel eyes, painted facial features. The torso has pin attachment to one-piece carved skirt over bent knees and carved feet, and is positioned seated on marble-painted wooden wall. The figure was designed to be alternately used in this presentation, or, likely to be attached to a cage skirt for standing upright. Very good condition, original finish albeit some rubs and wear especially on shoulders, few holes in front torso where costume once attached, one figure broken. Late 18th century.

When wound, the couple waltz around and around on three metal wheels at the base while music plays. Marks: 4 N 7. There is a break and reglue (all pieces intact) at back shoulderplate. Germany, circa 1870, from a very rare series of models, notable for her elaborate coiffure, fancy jewelry and brown color of hair. Few models from this series are known to exist.
