A RARE PERSIAN KHANJAR DAGGER Lot #123 (Sale Order 123 of 529) A massive example, the hilt carved of very rare Reza'ye stone found only in the town of Mashad in Northern Iran, where the 8th Imam Reza was martyred at the beginning of the 9th century c.e. The broad, recurved blade is forged of Persian kara khorassan wootz; the forte and bolsters are embellished with fine gold-inlaid vinework. In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard. Late 18th century. Reza’ye stone is considered a potent talisman. Imam Reza’s touch is believed to have purified the brackish water from the riverbed where this stone is found; drinking it is considered a blessing. Fitted at the right forte with a well-wrought flintlock pistol with pop-out trigger, the mechanism protected by an applied steel guard, the thick, tapering turn-off barrel with decorative band at the muzzle. The blade lightly-curved and single-edged, with broad central fuller, terminating is an acute tip with backedge, and engraved at the forte on each side with scrolling, flowers and a stag. A FINE SUIT OF BLACK AND WHITE ARMOR Lot #250 (Sale Order 250 of 529) Very well maintained and retaining a smooth, black surface alternating with elaborately etched bands of vinework in bright steel throughout. Comprising a characteristic burgonet with two-piece combed skull, hinged cheeks, neck-lames and plumeholder. The broad gorget of six pivoting plates with rolled border. Breastplate with central ridge and panels of vegetal etching, including a Reichsadler, or double-headed eagle, suggesting the owner was an Elector or Duke of the Holy Roman Empire. The backplate etched en suite, connecting to the breastplate with locking catches and a waist belt. With complete arm defenses, the pauldrons with two upper plates and flared rims, the upper canons of four lames, the inner arms protected by the winged couters, the lower canons with rolled edges. The well-articulated gauntlets composed of eight plates in addition to the fingers. The tassets composed of six plates, each with rare squared lower edge. Each cuisse composed of two plates, each knee cop constructed of five plates with wings. The finely-formed graved with sprung catches, the multiple-lame sabatons of kuhmaul or cowmouth style with expanded toe, following the fashion of the first half of the 16th century. Mounted on an oak base with square plinth. Middle of the 16th century. General wear, legs associated in period, period repairs to helmet and greaves, fingers restored and repaired, finger leather friable, some straps replaced, black finish rubbed, etching worn in areas. The adjustable nasal retained by a profiled set screw, the spike finial with finely pierced and gold-inlaid mount, and a pair of plume holders, likewise embellished with gold inlay. A FINE PAIR OF GREEK KOMPOURA PISTOLS Lot #282 (Sale Order 282 of 529) Exceptional craftsmanship, likely Epirus work. Stocked entirely in silver, chiseled, embossed and engraved in intricate baroque motifs involving flowering vinework, the triggers in the form of horses, and gilded overall. Mounted with imported flintlock mechanisms and barrels, each lock with covered frizzen spring, the barrels elaborately engraved and inlaid with maker’s marks. In their leather holsters with broad belt, each covered in velvet and embroidered with flowers in silk, with silver stems and leaves, with integral covered cartridge boxes, and set with numerous silk tassels. Late18th-early 19th century. Minor wear. The Greek nationalist movement which arose in the latter 19th century was, necessarily, clandestine. Weapons were forbidden to Ottoman subject peoples—on pain of death—so that those marked with Christian symbols such as crosses, or bore Greek inscriptions, were virtually unknown.
