'Carrera takes Targa' By Tim Layzell Lot #653 (Sale Order 53 of 146) With a lap distance of 45 miles, the Madonie circuit which played host to the Targa Florio provided an even greater test of man and machine than the mighty Nurburgring. Held on closed public roads on the island of Sicily, the Targa Florio was a mainstay of the World Sportscar Championship in its various guises through the 50s and 60s. Its status meant that sports prototypes such as the mighty Ferrari 312PB of fastest qualifiers Arturo Merzario and local hero Nino Vaccarella did battle with the twists and turns of this sinuous circuit but with a record average speed of just 80 miles per hour, agility and handling was more important than straight line speed. In 1973, when the faster prototypes dropped out through unreliability, the 911 Carrera RSR of Herbert Muller and Gijs van Lennep took outright victory. 'Last Great Road Race' By Tim Layzell Lot #659 (Sale Order 59 of 146) Peter Collins hurls his Ferrari 335S into a slide in pursuit of Giorgio Scarlatti's Maserati 300S as they both forge across the Abruzzi Mountains during the 1957 Mille Miglia. Collins set a searing pace, and by the time he reached the half way point at Rome, looked all set to break Stirling Moss' course record. However, a broken differential near Bologna - just 200miles from the finish - handed victory to Piero Taruffi in this, the last running of the Mille Miglia. Printed in English, French and Italian with diagrams showing part numbers and descriptions in Italian only. Front cover has an immobiliser instruction leaflet stapled to it and there is a handwritten note inside "REG DATE 50/5/72 CHASSIS NO 03936 DKH 265K". There is some fading and creasing to the covers but internal pages are mostly in good condition with limited marks and creases.

'Long Day Ahead' By Tim Layzell Lot #670 (Sale Order 70 of 146) The Mille Miglia was a race in which, even over a very long course, local knowledge counted. In 1955, Stirling Moss was the 3rd - and last - non-Italian to win the 1,000 mile epic in its 30 year history. Stirling was assisted in his efforts by the speed and stamina of the Mercedes-Benz 300SLR and the cool head of his navigator, bearded journalist Denis Jenkinson who had plotted the natural hazards of 1,000 miles of Italian roads onto a roll of paper in a waterproof case, which he communicated to Moss via a series of hand signals. The British pair did not have it all their own way and in the early stages, as shown here, they were harried by the Ferrari 121LM of Eugenio Castellotti as the race charged from town to town through the Italian landscape. Castellotti's matinee idol looks belied a steely determination and skill behind the wheel which made him the darling of the Italian fans. Although very fast, his Ferrari ate its rear tyres at an alarming rate, allowing Moss to ease clear and win at record speed. A year later, Mercedes having retired from motor racing, Moss and Jenkinson crashed out in their Maserati while Castellotti won a very wet race. 'True Film Stars' By Tim Layzell Lot #705 (Sale Order 105 of 146) The Porsche 917 of Jo Siffert and Brian Redman streaks down the Mulsanne straight pursued by the sister car of Pedro Rodriguez/ Leo Kinnunen and 2 of the rival Ferrari 512s of Vaccarella/Giunti and Merzario/Reggazoni at Le Mans in 1970. This was a serious effort by both manufacturers with no fewer than 7 of the flat-12 917s pitted against an even more staggering 11 Ferrari 512s (a mixture of works and privateer cars). In a race of attrition, only 7 of the 51 starters were classified, with the Porsche-Salzburg 917 of Richard Attwood and veteran Hans Herrmann taking Porsche's maiden victory at La Sarthe. However, as the chosen mount for Steve McQueen's Michael Delaney character in the film Le Mans, it is the pale blue and orange JWA-Gulf entered cars which have achieve immortality. Tag Heuer Autavia 'Jo Siffert' Lot #815 (Sale Order 130 of 146) A brilliant modern Autavia for the collector. First launched in 2003 these re-issues harped back to Heuer's early days. Jo Siffert, then an up and coming racing driver used to wheel and deal on the grid to fund his motor racing. His great friendship with Jack Heuer enabled him to sell Heuer watches to nearly every driver and follower of the day; he was even known to have sold them Porsches also. This spawned the sponsorship [that we all know to this day]. This classic design is a calibre 11 automatic chronograph with white dial, black sub-dials with blue accents. These were only available for a few years and are now acquiring cult status.

c.1973 Heuer Calculator Automatic Chronograph Lot #821 (Sale Order 136 of 146) In 1972 Heuer presented a new model with a mathematical name of 'Calculator'. With the Heuer Calculator the consumer had a clever mathematical instrument at hand which allowed for the calculation of difficult mathematical operations with just a few clicks of the watch. This Heuer Calculator Automatic chronograph is in a stainless steel square/tonneau case with a straight starburst finish and polished sides. The two calculating circles consist of a fixed inner scale and rotating outer ring. The black dial has 12 hour and 30 minute subdials. The date is at 6 o'clock and it has luminous baton hour markers. The movement is a calibre 12, originally designed in collaboration by Heuer, Breitling, Hamilton and Buren. It was the first automatic chronograph designed. Condition is fantastic and is simply the best we have ever seen. Perfect collection piece.

These Gran Turismo XL are incredibly popular and rarely come up for sale. This example is in really clean condition.

1960's Bulova Accutron Spaceview Lot #823 (Sale Order 138 of 146) This watch evokes an important stage of watch making history. Developed in the 1960's as an alternative to the lever movement, Bulova pioneered the Accutron with its tuning fork movement. This used the tuning fork instead of a balance for the timekeeping element. This was the forerunner of the quartz movement we all know today. Manufactured for 17yrs only this particular example uses the 214 movement which unusually has no setting stem or crown on the side as a normal watch but features it on the back. The Spaceview came about as a salesman's aid so that they could show off the tuning fork movement to their customers. It proved so popular that Bulova decided to put it into production and a legend was born. At 35mm diameter the circular stainless steel case is in exceptional condition for its age. Showing the Bulova logo and writing on the Perspex, with white hands and fitted with a rare original Accutron black leather strap and original Bulova pin buckle, the watch is in working order and "hums" just as it should A must for every collection.

Heuer Monaco Automatic Lot #827 (Sale Order 142 of 146) In 1969 Heuer shook up the watchmaking tradition by creating the first-ever square, water-resistant case. Driven by the celebrated chronomatic calibre 11, the Monaco was also the world's first square automatic chronograph. It was only one year old when Steve McQueen chose to wear it in 'Le Mans', the famous car racing film and on the wrist of this major star it soon became an icon. The Heuer Monaco was reintroduced in 1998 and has proven to be just as popular now as it ever was. This example has a Black dial with three sub dials, chrome hands and hour batons. The case is the traditional size and is made in stainless steel. It is finished with in a combination of polished and satin. The strap is original Heuer and has a stainless steel pin buckle. The movement is an ETA 2894, which is an automatic chronograph; these movements are reliable and tough, with parts available to most small independent jewellers. Firstly is an immaculate matching mens and women's pair of Mercedes Benz watches. These watches have black leather straps and the faces are styled to look like the old Mercedes Benz speedometers.
