Condition: generally excellent, original body and body finish with very light touch-up on hands. Marks: 231 Fany (script) A 3 M. Comments: Marseille, circa 1912, the model was inspired by the 16th century Francois Duquesnoy sculpture of a young child. Solid domed bisque socket head depicting young lad, very plump cheeks, small blue glass sleep eyes, painted lashes, one stroke brows, accented nostrils, clos...moreed mouth with very full downcast lips in wistful expression, dimpled double chin, composition and wooden ball-jointed toddler body with side-hip jointing, antique boy's costume comprising tweed double-collared coat over shirt, woolen pants, argyle socks, and leather saddle shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: K*R S&H 115. Comments: Kammer and Reinhardt, the model known as "Phillip", circa 1912, this being the rare sculpted hair model. The art character was inspired by the sculpture of the Dutch 16th century artist, Francois Duquesnoy, whose style was revived and highly popular in the early 1900s; his sculpture of a young boy was the model for K*R 115, for Marseille's Fany, and for the early type 1 model of Kathe Kruse (see also #2 and #4). Value Points: rare model with importance in doll history, and with outstanding detail of modeling, bisque and painting, fine lustrous complexion, original body and body finish.

Comments: Kathe Kruse, early Type I model, circa 1925, the model appeared in a mid-1920s catalog named "Ilse", model 106. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 6 1/2 made in Germany 7 1/2 171 (head) Germany 7 1/2 (body) Kestner Jointed Doll (box label) Crown Doll Kestner (paper label on chemise). Comments: Kestner, circa 1911, the 171 model in this particular size was introduced in the March 15, 1911 issue of Ladies' Home Journal as Daisy, "The Doll That Has Come to Life", inspired by their popular Lettie Lane paper doll. The issue told young girls how they could obtain the doll along with patterns for all of the costumes shown: just obtain three subscriptions for the magazine and send along with $4.50. The promotion was immensely popular, and for many months the doll continued to be offered "in her party clothes", "in her school clothes", "as a bride", and more. Value Points: in pristine unplayed with condition, in original box, with original chemise; included are 1911 Ladies' Home Journal magazines with color illustrations of the doll.

Outstanding 18th Century English Wooden Doll "Nellie" in Grand Size, Provenance 26,000/42,000

28" (71 cm.) Carved wooden oval-shaped head with elongated throat and torso having shapely bosom and waist, large black enamel eyes, "dot"-fringed lashes, feathered brows...more, accent dots at each eye corner and nostrils, closed mouth with well-defined lips, rosy cheeks, pert little chin, brunette hand-tied human hair wig, cloth upper arms, wooden lower arms with so-called "spatula" hands, dowel-jointing at hips and above the knees, shapely calves. Condition: generally excellent, original finish with very light rub on chin. Comments: English, circa 1770s, the doll was a cherished treasure of the Harris family of the Radford House of Plymstock, England. The Harris family, members of Parliament, of considerable military and political influence, owned the impressive Radford House for more than 500 years, it being notable for secret tunnels in the ground, a richly-paneled banquet hall, and encompassing over 50 rooms. Found tucked in the drawer of an 18th century chest in one of these 50 rooms was this doll, along with the accompanying 18th century German hat box and hat. The doll, named Nellie, was purchased from Radford House by the grandfather of an antique dealer from Newton Abbott named Graham Voadin, and was eventually acquired by a private English collector in whose home it has resided for several decades. Value Points: an extraordinary doll with original finish, grand size, and intriguing provenance, is wearing her original early woven brocade gown, with attached lace-edged apron, coin purse, rare embroidered sewing reticule, undergarments, hand-stitched silk slippers; the metallic decorated cap is preserved in original paper covered box.

Comments: Andreas Voit, circa 1825, German immigrant to France, created these elegant ladies, considered the premiere French poupee models, with heads commissioned from his native Germany, and with bodies, wigs, and costumes created in his adopted French home. Value Points: the stately presence of the elegant lady is enhanced by her splendid coiffure, and fine original wedding ensemble including undergarments, silk slippers with ankle ties, embroidered tulle fichu, elaborate coiffe and floral bouquet of wax orange blossoms.

Marks: Poupee Brevete SGDG (stamp on torso). Comments: Adelaide Huret, circa 1867, on early rare Clement body of 1866 which was a durable hollow leather body that exactly copied the shape of the Huret gutta percha body, and was designed to serve that market. Value Points: an outstanding poupee whose rarity and wonderful preservation is enhanced, simply, by her beautiful presence. Included with the doll is an extensive trousseau of seven outstanding antique "mode enfantine" gowns in classic mauve and aqua silk and cottons, along with blue silk jacket, black leather cap with red flannel skirt, green woven day coat, lace cap and woven slippers. This very doll (in alternate dress) is featured in a full page photograph in The Huret Book by Francois and Danielle Theimer, page 181.
