Cal. 30-06. S# 1367533. Bbl. 24", marked behind the front sight, "SA", a flaming bomb, and "1-31". Muzzle has the correct star gauge at the 6 o'clock position. Nearly 5,000 of these very nice sporting rifles were made at Springfield Armory between 1923 and 1938. They were discontinued because of a conflict between the National Armory and the sporting rifle industry. This rifle is equipped with a Lyman 48C receiver sight, which has small knobs and a folding aperture. The sight slide and base have matching numbers. The blade front sight is the standard 2-piece construction. The receiver has two punch proofs on the right side raceway. The bright, polished bolt, which has a matching electro-pencil number, is a professional-quality replacement fabricated from the body of a later Model 1903 A3 bolt. The machine marks around the bolt body are still faintly visible around the area of the safety lug. Bolt handle is marked "NS" (Nickel Steel), marked underneath with "7" and a punch proof. The milled trigger guard is unmarked. Grooved trigger. Walnut stock is equipped with two recoil bolts. The forend has a band retained by a pin and is marked "U". Checkered steel-type buttplate. Military-type swivel in the belly of the stock. Circle "P" proof under grip. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: unmarked Model 1921 blued steel National Match front sight cover. CONDITION: stock retains most of its original factory finish with light wear and small scattered handling marks. There are three noticeable 1" scratches on the bottom right side of the buttstock behind the grip and a tiny 1/4" crack on the right side of the trigger guard tang. Metal retains approximately 80% of its lightly worn original blue finish. Near-excellent, shiny bore. PROVENANCE: from the collection of Curtis H. Halvorson. (23-5937/RW). CURIO. $1,500-2,250.
