Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Special Order Extra Length Barrel

Known simply as “The Gun that Won the West,” the Winchester Model 1873 Rifle stands as an icon of American firepower on the open frontier that still resonates with modern collectors. The Model 1873 was a working gun that saw hard use. It was often paired with a Colt Single Action Army or other revolver chambered for the popular .44-40 W.C.F. cartridges. This made carrying ammunition for both your rifle and your revolver simple and allowed an individual to be ready to defend themselves against man or beast in a variety of tough situations. This well cared for example was manufactured in 1883 and has a factory special order 26 inch barrel (standard length was 24 inches). According to Winchester expert and author George Madis, "one of each 600 rifle had a barrel longer than standard' (see "The Winchester Book, page 212). The rifle is fitted with a dovetail front sight base (blade absent) and an elevation adjustable rear sight on a barrel stamped with the two-line Winchester legend. The rifle lacks a caliber designation. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873." The serial number is on the lower tang. The buttstock is fitted with a trapdoor crescent buttplate (cleaning rod not included). Mounted with nicely figured walnut forearm and straight grip stock.

Class: Antique

Fine. The barrel, magazine tube, and forend cap retain 50% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance and some scattered spotting. The receiver shows abrasive scratches and retains 30% original blue finish. Traces of original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. Patterns of original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. The wood is very good with numerous scattered handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
