Documented U.S. Springfield Armory M1 Garand Mk 2 MOD 1 "Secretary of the Navy" Semi-Automatic Trophy Rifle in 7.62 mm NATO with Shipping Box

Receiver from August 1943 production, subsequently re-chambered for 7.62x51 mm NATO and upgraded by U.S. Naval Weapons Center in Crane, Indiana, as a U.S. Secretary of the Navy trophy rifle. These trophy rifles were awarded to winners of the U.S. Navy East and West Coast Fleet Matches, constructed from an assortment of surplus and more specialized components, with this example, like most others, configured as Mk2 MOD 1 standard rifle instead of a match rifle. Reference page 563 and 577-585 of Bruce Canfield's "The M1 Garand Rifle" for more details on these rifles. Features fixed winged blade front and type 3 "lock-bar" adjustable peep rear sight assembly, with a wide-base gas cylinder and cross-slot poppet valve plug. The barrel is marked "SA," "SPL 9 65," and "H&R" in large font, along with "7.62 MM" and "7.62 NATO" on the right side, with bright chamber. Includes a "6535382 SA" marked operating rod, unmarked follower, and "D28287-12SA/S-06" bolt. The trigger housing is marked "D28290-12-SA," with a "C46008 5 SA" hammer and unmarked milled trigger guard. Fitted with a nicely figured reproduction walnut stock and handguard set finished in polyurethane. Includes a numbers matching DD From 1149 shipping document dated "09/14/1993" addressed from "COMMANDER, CRANE DIVISION, NAVAL SURFACE WARFARE CENTER, CODE 202, CRANE IN" listing the rifle as a "RIFLE, MK2 MOD 1 NSN 1005-00-923-9070/(SECNAV AWARD RIFLE)" and shipping box.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Exceptionally fine as arsenal refurbished and upgraded by U.S. Naval Weapons Center in Crane, Indiana, as a U.S. Secretary of the Navy trophy rifle, retaining 90% re-applied parkerized finish with minor edge wear, scattered minor spotting/pitting, dried grease, and light handling marks. The replacement stock is very fine as sealed. Mechanically excellent. An exceptional documented specimen of a Mk2 MOD 1 U.S. Secretary of the Navy trophy rifle!
