Desirable Special Order Winchester Semi-Deluxe Model 1894 Lever Action Takedown Rifle with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1898 according to Madis. This is a scarce, documented example of a special order Winchester "semi-deluxe" Model 1894 takedown rifle. The included factory letter lists the rifle in .30 caliber with a half octagon barrel, plain trigger, sporting rear and Lyman combination front and rear sights, and a plain checkered pistol grip stock when received at the warehouse on 1 August 1901 and shipped the same day in order number 103555. The upper left flat of the barrel and the receiver have Winchester factory oval proofs, indicating that the rifle was returned to the factory for some sort of work after 1903. It is possible that the rifle was converted to takedown at this time, or that the takedown feature simply wasn't originally listed in the ledger. The top barrel flat has the standard two-line Winchester address and the caliber marking at the breech, while the two-line nickel steel marking is on the upper left. The upper tang has the three-line model, trademark, and patent information. The left side of the lower tang is marked "12416 CF", with "12416" repeated inside the buttplate and on the butt of the stock along with "94". There is a discreet import mark. It is fitted with a Lyman combination front sight, elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sight, and a Lyman mid-range peep sight mounted on the upper tang. It is mounted with a faintly figured, I-pattern checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Class: Antique

Very fine, retains 70% plus of the original blue finish, 75% of the vibrant case colors on the sides of the lever and hammer, and faint nitre blue on the loading gate with the balance mostly a smooth grey patina and some scattered speckled spotting on the receiver. The wood is fine with some scattered light handling marks, a patch of varnish absent at the front right of the wrist where it meets the receiver, a discreet interior stabilizing pin, and well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent.
