Newton Arms 1st Model 1916 Bolt Action Sporting Rifle, NVSN, .256 Newton cal., 24" barrel, blue finish, checkered walnut one-piece pistol grip stock with Schnabel forend and smooth steel grip cap, sling eyes, banded brass bead blade front and two-leaf folding express rear sights, forward facing double set triggers, checkered double square bridge receiver drilled and tapped with holes filled, sharp factory markings with "NEWTON ARMS CO., INC./BUFFALO, N.Y." barrel address. Rifle is in near excellent overall condition, retaining 94%-95% thinning factory finish, with light marks and scattered spots of erosion. Receiver shows lightening and thinning finish with modest edgewear. Bottom metal and trigger guard displays light edgewear and scattered spots of light corrosion. Stock is near excellent with indentations and light marks. Butt ends with a smooth steel buttplate, with widow's peak providing a 14" LOP to the front trigger. Bore is good with even light erosion and strong rifling. Action functions smoothly and locks up securely. Limited in production to approx. 4,000 rifles. Charles Newton was a pioneer of American Sporting rifles who had unfortunate timing, attempting to introduce his new line of rifles in the middle of WWI. A lack of resources, ammunition and interest soon put Newton Arms out of business. His rifles remain scarce and desirable as originally configured. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (C&R/PPT)
