Rare Winchester Double-W Cartridge Board, #989. An outstanding original Winchester cartridge board measuring approx. 52"x35" displaying a gold gesso inner frame and smooth oak picture frame measuring 57"x 40". There are a total of 215 bullets, cartridges and shotgun shells mounted in a classic Winchester double W pattern. The center of the board is dominated by the large trademark, "WINCHESTER/REPEATING ARMS" in red, bordered in gold under which an A.B. Frost oval vignette of two successful hunters admiring their bear. Additionally, the board displays advertising for Winchester repeating rifles, shotguns, gun wads, metallic ammunition, shells, primers, percussion caps and virtually everything ammunition and components related that Winchester sold at the time. The board also depicts vignettes of a flying Mallard drake and mounted Bull Moose head. The company headquarters is displayed in red letters at the bottom, "NEW HAVEN, CONN., U.S.A.", with their offices in New York and San Francisco underneath. The reverse of the board is still covered in brown paper with the original Winchester label "PRESENTED WITH COMPLEMENTS/OF THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." asking the recipient to "PLEASE HANG IN A PROMINENT PLACE". A black stencil identifies the piece as S/N 989. The board is in very good to fine condition with a shot shell in the lower left corner that has come loose and fallen to the bottom. The colors remain sharp for the age of the piece and it appears that several shells may have been re-attached during the period of display. The cartridges show modest oxidation and discoloration. The frame shows scrapes and mars but is structurally sound. There are later brackets added to the rear for strength and old iron hanging brackets at each corner. There is an old sticker added at the lower right indicating the board was mfg'd in 1895 by Winchester. An outstanding piece of American Firearms memorabilia that has been well cared for. Est.: $20,000-$30,000**
