Mid-Late WWII Japanese Officer's Shin-Gunto Sword, with 27" machine made oil-tempered shinogi-zukuri style blade showing an irregular ko-midare style hamon temper line. Tang is signed with a six-character signature, and the smith's name is possibly "Muneyoshi". It has one mounting hole and some white painted assembly numbers, with copper habaki. No seppa spacers, but handle/guard fit is fairly tight. Guard has a hole for the leather retaining strap which is missing its snap. Wood-covered handle is covered in rayskin and wrapped with a light brown silk ito cord. Simple late-war style lower handle fitting, with standard decorated fitting at the top. Scabbard is wood, painted black, with a leather field cover, and brass hanging ring fitting. It is missing the lacing at the top of the leather cover. Condition is good, the blade showing several light rust stains, a light covering of old grease, no edge nicks, and is quite sharp. Handle is good, the rayskin showing some shrinkage, separation, and minor losses. Cord wrapping shows age, minor wear, and light soiling. Fittings show normal age patina. Scabbard shows some cracking to the paint visible under the leather wrapping. Leather cover is very nice, with just a couple of small scuffs and a small tear near the hanging ring on one side. As mentioned above, the leather cover is missing the lacing at the top and the snap on the retaining tab. Est.: $600-$800.
