Fine Cased Pair of Engraved Gold Banded Maclauchlan Percussion Travelers Pistols -A) Maclauchlan Travelers Pistol

Fine Cased Pair of Engraved Gold Banded Maclauchlan Percussion Travelers Pistols -A) Maclauchlan Travelers Pistol
This is a very fine matched pair of English travelers pistols. The top of the breechblock has a wedge of floral scroll engraving and the top of the barrel is marked "EDINBURGH" with floral scroll engraving ahead of the marking. There is a gold inlaid band on the breech plug, the barrel tang is engraved with a leaf design and the lock is marked "Maclauchlan". There is simple floral scroll engraving on the back action lock, hammer, and trigger guard. Iron swivel mounted ramrod with button head, brown Damascus barrel with blue trigger guard and casehardened lock and hammer, fish motif hammer, bead and fixed notch sights. Mounted with a full walnut stock with checkered grip, horn forend, and cap compartment on the butt with floral engraved lid and silver thumb plate marked with a motto "VIRTUS SUB PONDERE CRESCIT" on a ribbon over a fish, and the initials "I.M." This is the motto and part of the coat of arms of the Irish McCann family, and the pair was likely owned by a member of the large family. Members of the McCann family were notable figures in the Old Northwest in the 19th century, including in the early Wisconsin lumber industry. Complete in a wooden case with a brass inscription disk on the lid with the same inscription as the thumb plate, hunter green velvet lining with pressed decorative border design on the inside of the lid and attached label with a man and hunting dogs, and reading "MACLAUCHLAN/Gun Maker/24/SOUTH FREDERICK STREET/EDINBURGH/Powder and Shot with Shooting Tackle/of every description". The case has six compartments with two having lids with pulls and contains a small flask, Eley cap tin, nipple wrench with ebony handle, and wooden ramrod.

Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 85% of the original brown finish and all of the Damascus pattern remains. The hammer retains 70% original bright case colors with a smooth brown patina on the balance. All of the gold inlay remains. The lock shows 60% original case colors in protected areas around the hammer. There is scattered bright original blue finish on the trigger guard and ramrod pipe mixed with smooth brown patina. The stock is fine with a number of minor dents and scratches especially on the left flat, a stress crack at the lock plate screw, and crisp checkering. Clear markings and engraving. The hammer does not hold at the half cock position, otherwise action is fine. The case is good with an old minor crack in the lid, scattered minor dings and scratches, some minor contact wear on the lining, and some heavy wear from the hammer of the top gun. The accessories are all fine.
