Civil War-Era National Arms Co./Moore's Patent Front-Loading Pocket Revolver, with Extremely Rare Original Pictorial Green Pasteboard Box, Printed Instruction Sheet and One Cartridge, #5503, .32 Teatfire cal., 3.25" barrel marked "Moore's Pat Fire Arms Co. Brooklyn N.Y." on top with engraved sunburst at breech and hinged extractor at right. Plain round 5-shot cylinder is marked "D. Williamson's Patent January 5, 1864" on rear periphery. Brass frame has scroll-and-punch dot engraving at sides, central hammer, integral spurtrigger sheath and "bird's head" straps with 2-pc. smooth gutta-percha grips. Mfg'd ca. 1864-70 (when sold to Colt's Pat. F.A. Mfg. Co.) with blued barrel and cylinder, and silver-plated frame. Condition is very good+ retaining traces of barrel blue in protected areas and perhaps 20% thinning/darkening silver, sharp engraving and clear markings, sound and smooth grips. Action is crisp, lockup tight, bore is bright with sharp rifling. Very rare factory 2-pc. green pasteboard box (measures 7.5"x2.75") has fine printed label with large engraving of this revolver (stain at top, but all clear), solid joints (missing 1" piece of front "lip"). Original 5"x8" printed instruction sheet headed "Advantages of the/New National Revolver" is complete and clean with light age and oil staining. Original 1.25" copper cartridge with projecting rear teat, is clean with age patina. These revolvers used proprietary front-loading cartridges to evade S&W's Rollin White patent for bored-thru cylinders. An amazing find. Est.: $1,200-$1,800. (Antique)
