Lot is for two 60 round drum magazines. These very rare prototype 60 round magazines were part of the early Special Purpose Individual Weapon (SPIW) program are started by the AAI Corporation in the early 1960s to compete with the M16 in trails. The SPIW program came up with the prototype XM19 Flechette Rifle. Very few rifles were made and very few of their 50 round drum magazines. These magazines are extraordinarily rare. They are both in very good condition tem 1) Description: Tapered cylindrical drum magazine for the XM645 Flechette cartridge. Type Designator/Model: Unknown. Cal./Size: 4 ¼-inch major diameter and 2 ¾-inches deep. Color: anodized Green. Manufacturer: Aircraft Armament Industries. Country of Origin: United States. Long Description: This 60 round magazine is an early design for the AAI second generation Special Purpose Individual Weapon (SPIW) concept weapon. It is made from machined aluminum and high density nylon. The nylon wall has a hairline crack and small spider cracks around most of the flathead assembly screws The has no markings. It is a static prototype mag and does not take rounds. Item 2) Description: This magazine has a "cutaway" opening to show how the rounds are seated inside the drum. It is tapered cylindrical drum magazine for the XM645 Flechette cartridge. Type Designator/Model: Unknown. Cal./Size: 4 ¼-inch major diameter and 2 ¾-inches deep. Color: anodized green. Manufacturer: Aircraft Armament Industries. Country of Origin: United States. Long Description: This 60 round magazine is an early design for an AAI Special Purpose Individual Weapon (SPIW) concept weapon. It is made from aluminum and steel. There are no markings present. There is no ridge around the forward and rear edges of the magazine. There is a 1 ¼-inch by 1-inch cutaway hole in the side of the magazine that allows visibility into the magazine. Some rust on on the steel components. This internals appear to function and take a round. The follower is under coil tension. Donley Auctions is authorized to release these two drum magazines from the Jim Geibel collection by his family.
