Spanish American War duffel bag belonging to George P. McRae who personalized it with an artistically ink drawn military ship and his name. The bag measures 24.5" x 34.5". McRae's name is rendered in ink and white paint. The letters stand 2.25" tall and the entire name measures 13.5" in length. The drawing of the ship is 11.5" x 11". His name is also stenciled in ink on two other places. The top of the bag has eight brass grommets for a drawstring. The inside is lined with another layer of canvas. Overall good condition with some fraying particularly along the bottom edges. George P. McRae served in Co. M, 47th Regiment of New York Volunteers during the Spanish American War. The 47th Infantry Regiment was one of twelve New York State National Guard infantry regiments that were federalized for service in the Spanish-American War. The unit was mustered into service as the "47th Regiment Infantry, New York Vols." at Camp Black, NY on May 24th, 1898. The regiment was sent to Puerto Rico in October, 1898 and arrived at Ponce on October 15, 1898. From there, Company M along with 5 other companies of the regiment were sent to San Juan where these companies were divided up and sent to other posts in Puerto Rico. They performed duties of both military and civilian nature. The regiment was ordered home in March of 1899 and by the 10th, the entire unit had disembarked in Brooklyn. The regiment was mustered out on March 31st, 1899. In-house shipping is available.
