CDV of 1st Lieutenant Sylvanus S. Dixon signed in pencil below the image. The reverse bears gum remnants of a revenue stamp and the photographer's backmark of M. L. Lewis of Cleveland, Ohio. The reverse also bears a modern pencil note regarding the officer; the corners are slightly trimmed. This image is published in Echoes of Battle, the Atlanta Campaign (1991). Dixon enlisted April 16, 1861 in Co. E (Cleveland Grays) of the 1st OVI three month regiment as a Private. On muster out, he re-enlisted August 20, 1861 as 1st Sergeant in Co. D. of the 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, three years unit. Lieut. Dixon was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in November 1863 and was killed in action May 27, 1864 at Dallas, Georgia during the assault of Hazen's Brigade at Pickett's Mill. He is interred at Marietta National Cemetery. The 1st OVI fought at First Bull Run, Shiloh, Corinth, Stones River, Chickamauga and the Battles for Atlanta, including Kennesaw Mountain and Peach Tree Creek. His name is inscribed on one of the the walls of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Cleveland, amongst the honored many from Cuyahoga County. In-house shipping is available.
