Automobile, 1984 Pontiac Fiero SE. "Bought from a buddy in a bar late one night," says Doug. Both participants in the deal may have been "over served." Doug says, "Never do that again!" The next day it became clear that at 6' 2" 190 lb man and a Fiero is not a good choice. This car seemed to be a great idea in the 1980's, championed by a new Pontiac VP Bill Hoglund. Coming from a couple decades of building muscle cars, it seemed to make a bit of sense. Pontiac was supposed to be the "Excitement Division". Here was a brand new idea. The Fiero, in Italian meaning "Very Proud", in Spanish, "Fierce." A lot to live up to in a smart compact sporty car. And GM needed a fuel efficient car. This could be it! The car had some interesting leading edge ideas: transverse, mid-engine rear-wheel-drive. The only engine available in 1984 was the "Iron Duke". It was a cast iron 4 cylinder, 171ci 92 hp engine. All in a sporty compact fuel efficient commuter car. GM put it together from a lot of components from other compacts in their lines. And it was shaped by noted designers Hulki Aldikacti and George Milidrag. Sure seemed like it should work. But the problem may well have been amplified by the issues Doug Gethmann identified when he first tried it on! The car was indeed COMPACT. The run of Fieros lasted 5 years with total production being just over 300,000 cars. This car, conceptually, has a lot going for it. The ideas made sense for the time. It is a cool looking car. For a smaller in stature person, this could be a great car. The car seems to be sound. It hasn't been driven recently, (because Doug can't get in it). Could be a great car for a daughter or son in college, unless they play basketball or football! It has air, sunroof and 4-speed. Interior looks excellent as does under the hood. Body condition looks good and odometer shows 74,833 miles. VIN# 1G2AF37R1EP273380
