1979 Dick Holynski SuperModified Sprintcar. Dick Holynski of Buffalo, NY was a nationally known builder of midget, sprint car, supermodified, and Indianapolis-type race cars. He was well-regarded for both his design and fabrication skills. Holynski built the supermodified race car on display in 1979 for NY racer Tommy Leeson to compete in the supermodified division at the 5/8 mile asphalt oval as Oswego, NY. At the end of the 1981 season the car was sold to veteran supermodified racer from Ohio, Jim Shirey, and he raced the car through the 1991 season at most of the top supermodified venues in the mid-west, including Indianapolis Raceway Park, Salem and Winchester, IN, Sandusky and Lorain County in OH, Berlin, MI and others in addition to returning each year to race the Oswego Classic. The car features a four-bar cross torsion suspension with the front suspension using a low-bar design for cleaner air flow across the nose of the race car. The car's driveline is offset to the left to enhance handling characteristics on the large, fast asphalt tracks on which it raced.. The offset rear end is from Halibrand Engineering, Wilwood disc brakes and PRO racing shocks are used on all four corners, and the car rides on Hoosier asphalt racing slicks mounted on 4-bead lock aluminum racing wheels. An adjustable 2.5' x 5' wide aluminum top wing provides maximum downforce and a pair of adjustable aluminum mini-wings to the left and right of the front nosepiece direct air over the front suspension and provide additional grip for the front end of the car. The entire body is also aluminum and the hood is designed for downforce and to direct airflow over the driver with minimum turbulence. The engine is a big block Chevrolet with Hilborn fuel injection, a Vertex magneto, and a dry sump oiling system in place. The engine in the car is a display motor with no internal parts inside. The car has recently been on display at the Eastern Auto Racing Historical Society in this configuration.
